Tendulkar recalls thread gesture as Kohli retires
New Delhi, May 12 (UNI) Batting great Sachin Tendulkar on Monday led tributes to Virat Kohli on his retirement from Test cricket, recalling a deeply personal gesture from the former India captain during his own farewell Test in 2013.
"As you retire from Tests, I'm reminded of your thoughtful gesture 12 years ago, during my last Test. You offered to gift me a thread from your late father. It was something too personal for me to accept, but the gesture was heartwarming and has stayed with me ever since," Tendulkar posted on X.
"You have given Indian cricket so much more than just runs – you have given it a new generation of passionate fans and players. Your true legacy, Virat, lies in inspiring countless young cricketers to pick up the sport," he added, congratulating Kohli on "a very special Test career."
Legendary batsman Kohli's decision to hang up his boots from the longest format has drawn an outpouring of tributes from across the cricketing world, with former India opener Virender Sehwag also praising the 35-year-old for his passion, intensity, and impact.
"From the time I saw you, I knew that you are special. The intensity that you brought and the sheer passion with which you played Test cricket was a joy to watch. You were a great ambassador of Test cricket and wish you the best of times ahead in One Day cricket," Sehwag posted.
Kohli, who made his Test debut in 2011 against the West Indies, went on to represent India in 123 Test matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also captained the side in 68 Tests, winning 40 – the most by any Indian captain.
A fierce competitor and a flag-bearer of India's aggressive brand of Test cricket, Kohli was instrumental in transforming the team's fitness culture and instilling a relentless drive for excellence. Under his leadership, India rose to the top of the ICC Test rankings and reached the finals of the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.
Kohli's retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket. His contributions, both as a batsman and leader, have left an indelible mark on the sport.
Further tributes are expected from Indian team in the coming days.

WATCH: Fuming R Ashwin walks back unhappy with umpire's decision during TNPL game
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin was seen fuming during the Tamil Nadu Premier League. The 38-year-old who plays for Dindigul Dragons was judged LBW off the bowling of Sai Kishore, who plays for IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. Ashwin was seen in a long argument with the umpire, and he was thundering off the field and was seen hitting his pads in anger with the bat. 'Ashwin is saying 'he has bowled this from over the stumps, ma'am', arguing his case that it was pitched well outside leg stump,' said one of the commentators on AIR during the incident. Dindigul Dragons burnt both their reviews in the opening over in the hope of overturning the wide call from the umpire. Ashwin's 18 is the second-highest score alongside RK Jayant. Shivam Singh, with his 30, was the top scorer as the Dragons were bundled out for a mere 93 runs from 16.2 overs. Esakkimuthu A was the pick of the bowlers for Tamizhans with four wickets, with M Mathivannan picking three wickets. Skipper Sai Kishore too chipped in with a couple. R Ashwin's retirement after the third Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came in as a bit of a surprise at the time. The off-spinner after bowling well in the Adelaide Test on a wicket that was not conducive for spinners was axed from the Gabba Test at the end of which he called it a day. With 537 wickets to his name when asked if he would have liked to have a farewell Test for his retirement he responded by saying, 'Where is the place?' 'I want to play more cricket. Where is the place? Obviously not in the Indian dressing room but from somewhere else. I want to be honest with the game. Imagine if I want to play the farewell Test but I do not deserve a place. Imagine, I am only in the team because it is my farewell Test. I don't want that. I felt there was more strength in my cricket. I could have played more but it is always better to finish when people ask 'why' and not 'why not',' Ashwin said on Ash ki Bath. 'What difference will this make if I came out with the ball and people are clapping? How long will people talk about it? When social media was not there, people talked about it and forgot after one week. There is no need for a farewell. The game has given us a lot and we have played with a lot of happiness.' Ashwin added.

WTC Final: ‘We've Buried the Past,' says Aiden Markram as South Africa dream big ahead of Lord's encounter
Aiden Markram (Photo by) South African batsman Aiden Markram expressed confidence that his team will overcome past tournament failures when they face Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord's on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters at Lord's on Sunday, Markram addressed concerns about previous defeats, including last year's T20 World Cup final loss to India in Barbados. South Africa's previous heartbreak in the T20 World Cup final saw them fall short despite needing just 30 runs from 30 balls with six wickets in hand against India. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Markram, who captained the T20 team and is one of five players from that match in the current WTC final squad, believes the Test team under Temba Bavuma 's leadership will approach this challenge differently. "This team is a bit different. The few of us that have been a part of previous events that didn't go our way have dealt with it, have obviously chatted to each other and made sure we've buried it nicely and taken some good lessons from it. But besides from that now, it's more about the excitement of having another opportunity to actually do the job. So that's pretty much where the mind is at the moment." Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket's TV market and the watershed moments As an opener, Markram will face Australia's formidable bowling attack, while South Africa counters with their own impressive pace attack led by Kagiso Rabada . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 4 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Health Now Undo "When you're opening the batting, obviously your responsibility is to get the team off to a good start and get us ahead of the game. So that's the challenge, that's what excites us. But when you're preparing against your bowlers, who are world-class, it can only help you as a batter, as uncomfortable as it can be at times." South Africa's qualification for the final came after winning seven consecutive Tests, mostly in short series formats. Major League Cricket: Liam Plunkett on how cricket can boom in the USA "A lot of our series have been two-game series. So in order to win that series, you can't start slow. There's no second dip at it, so we're going to have to make sure we hit the ground running and are nice and sharp come day one." The 30-year-old Markram, with 45 Test matches under his belt, anticipates the historic opportunity to play at Lord's. "To play in a Test match here is really special and then obviously for it to be a final is probably the cherry on top." When asked about what makes Lord's memorable, Markram responded: "Probably just the know how many of the greats of the game have played here. For us to have that opportunity to play on the same field and share that changing room that they once sat in is quite a cool thought."
