Huge explosion reported at China chemical plant
BEIJING: A large explosion at a chemical plant in eastern China on Tuesday caused giant plumes of smoke to rise from the building, state media said, with no casualties immediately reported.
The blast occurred at the Youdao Chemical plant at around 11:57 am (0357 GMT) in Gaomi, a town in Shandong province around 450 kilometres (280 miles) southeast of the capital Beijing, according to the China News agency.
Videos broadcast by the Beijing newspaper Xinjingbao showed a gigantic column of grey smoke rising into the sky, a fire in an industrial zone and shop windows apparently blown out by the explosion.
Clips also showed debris strewn across a road, a car with a smashed windscreen, and dark orange flames devouring installations in the background.
Emergency services dispatched 55 vehicles and 232 first responders to the scene, the national Ministry of Emergency Management said in a statement.
Youdao Chemical manufactures 'low-toxicity' pesticides and employs around 300 people on a site of 47 hectares (116 acres), according to the Chinese online media The Paper.
Industrial accidents occur regularly in China, where safety standards in its countless factories are sometimes not respected.
In 2015, explosions at warehouses containing flammable chemicals in the port city of Tianjin killed over 170 people and injured 700 others.

And in two separate incidents on Sunday, another 139 migrants were rescued off northern France, the maritime prefecture added Monday afternoon. "There were a lot of departures. An overloaded boat broke apart," the prefecture said. "One person died." Authorities were notified at around 2:30 am (0030 GMT) Monday, with a French rescue tugboat, British vessels and a French navy helicopter deployed to assist the migrants. And the 139 people rescued on Sunday were transported to the northern port city of Calais, said the maritime prefecture. According to authorities, at least 12 migrants have died since the beginning of 2025 while trying to reach England aboard small boats. A total of 78 migrants died in 2024 while trying to cross the Channel aboard small boats, a record since the rise of crossings in this area in 2018. Between January and December 2024, more than 36,800 people arrived in Britain via these dangerous crossings - a 25-percent increase compared to 2023.

Japanese military training plane crashes with two on board
TOKYO: A Japanese military training plane crashed near a lake shortly after takeoff with two people on board, authorities said on Wednesday. 'A T-4 training aircraft that belongs to the Air Self-Defense Force crashed at 3:08 pm (0608 GMT) after radar lost (it) near a lake… after taking off at Komaki Air Base' in central Japan, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani told reporters. Nakatani said two people were on board, without revealing their identity. 'We don't know what caused the aircraft to crash, but we will continue to do our utmost to save lives,' he said, adding that the military has been carrying out search operations. An aircraft part was found near the scene, but it was unclear whether it was from the crashed plane, Nakatani said.
