'Delete Your Nudes': What Travellers Must Know Before Visiting The US

International travelers to the US are being cautioned to cleanse their digital devices of sensitive content, including personal photos, as border agents ramp up electronic searches under President Trump's renewed 'enhanced vetting' policies, according to The Metro. These measures, reinstated through executive orders, permit Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to inspect smartphones, laptops, and social media accounts without a warrant. As per the news report, although such searches affect only a small fraction of travellers, they have led to detentions and deportations based on digital content, including political views and personal images. Experts advise travellers to minimise stored data, use encrypted cloud services, and disable biometric logins to protect privacy. According to The Metro report, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have the legal authority to search electronic devices at the border: that's phones, laptops, and tablets. This includes reviewing text messages, social media activity, photos, emails, and even your browser history. In March, an unnamed French scientist was denied entry to the States after airport immigration officers searched his phone and found messages critical of the Trump administration. According to The Guardian, recently Amir Makled, a Lebanese-American lawyer representing one of the University of Michigan pro-Palestine campus protesters, was recently stopped at Detroit Metro Airport and interrogated by a tactical terrorism response team agent. Makled has said the agents knew exactly who he was; his phone was searched, and they asked about his contacts. Eventually, he was allowed to go home. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has imposed a ban on citizens from 12 countries, along with entry restrictions on nationals from seven other nations, citing national security and immigration enforcement concerns. The US President signed the executive order on June 4, nearly five months after taking office for the second term, and it will come into effect on June 9. The travel ban has been divided into two categories: a complete ban and a partial ban. Trump has imposed a full entry ban on 12 countries: Afghanistan, Myanmar, the Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea, and Somalia. The complete travel ban means the citizens of the aforementioned countries cannot enter the US at all, irrespective of the reason and purpose. He said that these countries don't respect US immigration rules. Most countries on the list denied taking their citizens back, and most of the people from here overstayed their visas, he said. Partial restrictions apply to seven countries: Burundi, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, Cuba, and Venezuela.

Tariffs, State Jabs Push Canadians to Ditch US Travel, Poll Says

Most Canadians say they plan to shun US travel this summer as the trade war between the two countries continues, according to a poll by Leger Marketing Inc. Only 10% of Canadians plan to travel to the US this summer, down from 23% last year. And they're increasingly choosing to travel domestically, with 77% planning to do so compared with 69% last year. Most respondents cited trade tensions as the main reason to avoid travel to the US, while others were concerned about their safety and worried about border delays. The sentiments reflect a broader movement by Canadians to boycott US products as a protest against President Donald Trump's tariffs and comments about making Canada the 51st state, as well as fears about Trump's immigration crackdown ensnaring visitors. The US economy is set to lose billions of dollars in revenue in 2025 from a pullback in foreign tourism and boycotts of American products. Nearly $20 billion in retail spending from international tourists could be at risk, according to an April analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence. Leger advised US tourism operators to 'rebuild trust and confidence among Canadian travelers' by focusing on a 'it's them, not us' approach to ease concerns. Canadians who said they would proceed with their US travel plans said they didn't feel affected by the political climate or that they needed to visit family or friends. Leger surveyed 1,537 Canadian residents between May 16 and 19. It's considered accurate within approximately 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. Trump travel ban: Will Iran travel for 2026 FIFA World Cup?

USA, Canada, and Mexico are all set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup together. However, President Donald Trump's latest travel ban has posed questions about whether certain qualified countries will now be allowed to travel to the US and take part. Starting Monday (June 9), citizens of 12 countries will no longer be allowed to get a US visa, according to a recent decision by Trump. Citizens of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen have been banned by Trump and tighter restrictions have been applied to seven other nations (Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela). Trump explained his move by stating in a video, 'The recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country, by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted, as well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas. We don't want them.' As of now, Iran is the only country from the list to have already qualified to compete in the FIFA World Cup next year. Cuba, Sudan, and Haiti are currently in contention to contest. Venezuela is five points off the threshold for automatic qualification but a playoff might just cut the deal. Sierra Leone can still be involved through multiple playoff games while Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, and Libya have very slim chances. Under the current policy, sports teams of qualifying countries should still be able to contest since such a provision have been provided for 'any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary support role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or other major sporting event as determined by the secretary of state.' However, this exception will only continue as long as there is no change to the current ban policy adopted by the US. Iranian fans hoping to catch their national team in the spotlight won't be so lucky however since the policy provides no such exceptions for fans of sporting teams. Getting an American visa had already been tough for Iranians even before the ban was implemented due to tougher vetting procedures. However, considering how those indulging in international travel for sporting events are usually from a higher wealth bracket, such individuals could still try to circumvent the process by using different passport options. The move has stirred a debate about the intersection of politics with global sport. Back in 2017, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had said, "Any team, including the supporters and officials of that team, who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup." Infantino has since developed close ties with Trump and has re-emphasized that sporting teams of all countries will face no barriers in coming to the US for participation next year. The event is expected to raise a majority of the soccer body's revenue in the 2023-2026 period. Questions have also been raised about the US' legitimacy to hold the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games with such strict travel policies against certain participating countries.
