There's whitewashing in rom-com films, it's all hunky-dory: Mohit Suri
Suri, known for movies such as 'Aashiqui 2", 'Awarapan", and 'Malang", said he wants to push back against the idealised portrayal of love that is often seen in mainstream romance dramas.
'In love, there will be pain. There is a certain whitewashing in a rom-com where everything is hunky-dory. When there is separation in love, it hurts, and if it doesn't hurt, it's not love enough to let the person go. Maybe I put more spotlight on it.
'For me, love is not about dancing in the mountains and flowers. Even though I've done that in some context, like in 'Humari Adhuri Kahani', but not the dancing part. If love is not real, then it's not felt. I believe in it more than I fantasise about it, and that's why I try to make films about love," Suri told PTI in an interview.
Released Friday, 'Saiyaara" is an intense love story of a young couple, played by Ahaan Panday, who makes his acting debut and Aneet Padda, known for featuring in web series 'Big Girls Don't Cry" and the Kajol-starrer film 'Salaam Venky".
The film is backed by Yash Raj Films (YRF).
'The song was taking me back to the moment when I met Udita (Goswami, his wife). When I made this song, I was standing under a hoarding of another film that Udita did, called 'Paap'.
'I told a school friend that 'She's so beautiful, I want to marry this girl'. Now, today, 21 years later, I'm married to her and share two children," he said.
Suri believes the music in his films is always born from the script, highlighting memorable tracks such as 'Agar Tum Mil Jao", 'Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein", 'Aadat", 'Tujhe Dekh Dekh", 'Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai", 'Chal Chale Apne Ghar", 'Haal-E-Dil", 'Sunn Raha Hai", 'Tum Hi Ho", 'Galliyan", 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani", and 'Phir Bhi Main Tumko Chahunga".
'The songs have always been situational. It's the film that inspired them. I find it so much easier when you have a script, a character, a situation. So, if the music of my film is good, it's because it's been inspired by the film." The director also praised the newcomers Ahaan and Aneet for their dedication towards the film and said they were apt choices for the lead roles.
Suri said the two actors watched his previous films to understand the nuances the filmmaker brings to his storytelling.
'It's important to watch the films you're working on, the kind of person you're working with, because somewhere, something of yours bleeds into your film.
So, what I like the most about these two was that they were film buffs before they became actors and not fashion icons and so-called influencers," Suri added.
The director also expressed excitement over the sequel to his 2007 movie, 'Aawarapan".
Suri's cousin, actor Emraan Hashmi, is returning for the follow-up, which will be directed by 'Filmistaan" fame Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt.
'They are making a sequel for it 18 years later. I don't think many film directors can have this luxury that a film that didn't do well at the box office years is being made into a sequel or remake," Suri said, adding that he would love to reunite with Hashmi when he has an apt script for him. Saiyaara Box Office Collection Day 8: Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda's movie is now inches away from ₹200 crore milestone
Saiyaara Box Office Collection Day 8: After an exceptional first week, Saiyaara, starring debutants Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda, has continued its dream run with a rock-steady hold at the Indian box office for week 2 on Friday. With an opening week collection of ₹ 172.75 crore, the Mohit Suri directorial is the second-highest Week 1 grosser of the year, only behind Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava. 'No one – not even in their wildest dreams – could have imagined Saiyaara shaking the industry with its phenomenal numbers, day after day,' said film trade analyst Taran Adarsh for the 'epic blockbuster'. In mere eight days at the theatres, Saiyaara is now just inches away from achieving the ₹ 200 crore milestone, which several Bollywood biggies like Sitaare Zameen Par couldn't achieve in over a month on the big screen. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Saiyaara witnessed a minimal (5.26%) drop from its Thursday earnings on Friday. However, showing a 'remarkable consistency,' the movie was able to mint ₹ 18 crore on Day 8 as it is headed towards its second weekend. The movie is expected to drop just 15–20%, which is still a remarkable hold. With this, Saiyaara has earned a total of ₹ 190.75 crore in 8 days. The movie is set to cross the ₹ 200 crore milestone on Saturday, Day 9. With little to no competition at the Hindi box office, Sacnilk estimated that Saiyaara's second weekend collection will be in the range of ₹ 70 crore net, which would be a record for a romantic drama and one of the biggest second weekends ever. If the momentum holds, there is a chance of Saiyaara touching the ₹ 250 crore mark by the end of its second weekend, a monumental benchmark for a movie led by fresh faces. This dream run is expected to continue for Saiyaara till at least August 1, before the release of Dhadak 2. On Day 7, Saiyaara collected ₹ 250.5 crore globally, of which it earned ₹ 43.5 overseas. Its gross collection in India stands at ₹ 207 crore. Saiyaara is a romance-drama about Krish Kapoor (Ahaan Panday), a budding musician, and Vaani Batra (Aneet Padda), a shy writer. Through their relationship, the film explores love, loss, and drama.

Hindi-Marathi row hits cinemas as MNS protests fewer screens for regional film
A fresh row has erupted in Maharashtra between Hindi and Marathi cinema over the allocation of movie theatre controversy began when screenings of the Marathi film Yere Yere Paisa 3 were reportedly reduced across multiplexes to accommodate the Hindi blockbuster Saiyaara, which has already grossed over Rs 220 crore globally. The decision has drawn strong backlash from Marathi filmmakers and regional political parties, who see it as a blow to the state's cultural Khopkar, the chief of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Cinema Wing and producer of Yere Yere Paisa 3, alleged that multiplexes were engaging in 'vindictive politics' by favouring Saiyaara over regional cinema. 'If my film isn't given screens, I will break the glasses of those theatres,' Khopkar warned, accusing cinema chains of ignoring the rule that mandates one screen in every multiplex for regional leader Sandeep Deshpande backed Khopkar's warning, reflecting the party's aggressive approach to protecting Marathi culture. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also extended support to MNS, writing on X, 'To accommodate Saiyaara, Yere Yere Paisa 3 has been sidelined, a recurring issue. The fight for Marathi must intensify. Jai Maharashtra!'The ruling Shiv Sena faction, led by Eknath Shinde, also entered the fray. Its Cinema Wing President, Sushant Shelar, staged a protest outside a Bandra PVR multiplex, demanding strict implementation of the regional film screening Saiyaara's screen count has surged from 800 to 2,000, while Marathi films struggle to secure prime slots in theatres. BJP minister Nitesh Rane weighed in on the issue, urging Marathi filmmakers to approach the government rather than protest. 'Saiyaara is a hit. If your movie is good, it will get screens,' he controversy comes amid growing concerns about the marginalisation of the Marathi language and culture in Maharashtra. Just weeks earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray joined forces to oppose what they termed the imposition of Hindi in state schools.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Maharashtra

Salman Khan Covers His Face As Paps Click Him In Mumbai, Fans React
Last Updated: Salman Khan was spotted in Mumbai on Friday, but he was seen hiding his face from the paparazzi. He pulled down the sun visor and used his hand to cover his face. Salman Khan was recently spotted in Mumbai, but unlike his usual interactions with the paparazzi, the actor chose to cover his face this time. The incident took place on Friday and quickly made its way to social media. Many started speculating that Salman may be hiding his look for his upcoming film titled Battle of Galwan. In the video, Salman is seen lowering his car's sun visor and later using his hand to avoid being photographed. Take a look below: Salman Khan was also spotted in Mumbai earlier this week in a transformed look. The actor, who has been teasing snippets of his transformation on Instagram from his intense gym sessions, was finally seen live in his full look for the much-awaited patriotic drama Battle of Galwan. Wearing a black t-shirt, Salman Khan was seen driving his SUV as he left a venue in Mumbai. What stood out right away was his short buzz cut and thick moustache, which seemed to match the look of a military officer. His serious expression and noticeably stronger build added to the tough look. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Manav Manglani (@ Salman will soon be seen playing an Army officer in Battle of Galwan, which is being directed by Apoorva Lakhia. The actor has already begun preparing for the film, which is expected to involve intense action sequences and physically demanding scenes. Speaking to PTI recently about the preparation for the film, Salman had said, 'It is physically demanding. Every year, every month, every day, every hour, it gets more and more difficult. But, you have to give it a lot more time now. Pehle ek do hafte mein ho jata tha, abhi thoda sa zyada time lagta hai. But, I have been working out, kicking, punching, and all that stuff. Iss film mein woh sab karne ki zaroorat hai." He also shared details about the challenging shoot locations. 'Shooting in Ladakh, high altitude, aisa na ho ke action karte karte behosh ho jao. So, for that, training is very important. Sign karte waqt aisa laga 'it is amazing', but it is a very difficult film to do because from 20 days in Ladakh, 7-8 days will be in the water, thanda thanda paani (smiles)," he added. Salman has confirmed that filming begins this month. The film also stars Chitrangada Singh, and it will be the first time the two actors share screen space.
