There's whitewashing in rom-com films, it's all hunky-dory: Mohit Suri

News185 days ago
Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) In love, there will be pain, says filmmaker Mohit Suri, who aims to explore the deeper, often uncomfortable truths of relationships in his films, including his latest 'Saiyaara".
Suri, known for movies such as 'Aashiqui 2", 'Awarapan", and 'Malang", said he wants to push back against the idealised portrayal of love that is often seen in mainstream romance dramas.
'In love, there will be pain. There is a certain whitewashing in a rom-com where everything is hunky-dory. When there is separation in love, it hurts, and if it doesn't hurt, it's not love enough to let the person go. Maybe I put more spotlight on it.
'For me, love is not about dancing in the mountains and flowers. Even though I've done that in some context, like in 'Humari Adhuri Kahani', but not the dancing part. If love is not real, then it's not felt. I believe in it more than I fantasise about it, and that's why I try to make films about love," Suri told PTI in an interview.
Released Friday, 'Saiyaara" is an intense love story of a young couple, played by Ahaan Panday, who makes his acting debut and Aneet Padda, known for featuring in web series 'Big Girls Don't Cry" and the Kajol-starrer film 'Salaam Venky".
The film is backed by Yash Raj Films (YRF).
'The song was taking me back to the moment when I met Udita (Goswami, his wife). When I made this song, I was standing under a hoarding of another film that Udita did, called 'Paap'.
'I told a school friend that 'She's so beautiful, I want to marry this girl'. Now, today, 21 years later, I'm married to her and share two children," he said.
Suri believes the music in his films is always born from the script, highlighting memorable tracks such as 'Agar Tum Mil Jao", 'Woh Lamhe Woh Baatein", 'Aadat", 'Tujhe Dekh Dekh", 'Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai", 'Chal Chale Apne Ghar", 'Haal-E-Dil", 'Sunn Raha Hai", 'Tum Hi Ho", 'Galliyan", 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani", and 'Phir Bhi Main Tumko Chahunga".
'The songs have always been situational. It's the film that inspired them. I find it so much easier when you have a script, a character, a situation. So, if the music of my film is good, it's because it's been inspired by the film." The director also praised the newcomers Ahaan and Aneet for their dedication towards the film and said they were apt choices for the lead roles.
Suri said the two actors watched his previous films to understand the nuances the filmmaker brings to his storytelling.
'It's important to watch the films you're working on, the kind of person you're working with, because somewhere, something of yours bleeds into your film.
So, what I like the most about these two was that they were film buffs before they became actors and not fashion icons and so-called influencers," Suri added.
The director also expressed excitement over the sequel to his 2007 movie, 'Aawarapan".
Suri's cousin, actor Emraan Hashmi, is returning for the follow-up, which will be directed by 'Filmistaan" fame Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Bhatt.
'They are making a sequel for it 18 years later. I don't think many film directors can have this luxury that a film that didn't do well at the box office years is being made into a sequel or remake," Suri said, adding that he would love to reunite with Hashmi when he has an apt script for him. India's highest-grossing film with newcomers earned ₹1000 crore, not Saiyaara or Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai

Every year, Bollywood introduces fresh faces; some shine bright, while others fade away with time. This year, it's Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda who continue to hit headlines with their blockbuster debut, Saiyaara. Directed by Mohit Suri and backed by YRF, the film has already crossed ₹ 200 crore worldwide, including ₹ 160 crore in India, achieving milestone after milestone. But, is it going to be the highest-grossing film for debutants? Only time can tell if the film continues to maintain its incredible footfall. For now, India's highest-grossing film with newcomers is Bobby. Raj Kapoor's film Bobby marked his son Rishi Kapoor's entry in Bollywood with Dimple Kapadia. The 1973 film made Rishi and Dimple stars overnight. According to a report of Hindustan Times, Bobby was made on a small budget of only ₹ 1 crore. However, it went on to earn about ₹ 11 crore alone in India. The book Cinema Industry in India: Pricing and Taxation claimed that over 5.35 crore people watched Bobby in theatres across the country. ₹ 1,000 crore, making it one of the most successful debut films in Indian cinema history. Not just in India, Bobby had a huge success overseas too. In the Soviet Union, where Bollywood films were in demand, Bobby sold around 62.6 million tickets and made 15.65 million Roubles at the box office, reportedly. It also performed very well in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, where people loved the movie in an era when there were no subtitles. Experts believe that if we adjust those international earnings to today's value, Bobby would have made easily somewhere between ₹ 600 to ₹ 800 crore or even more overseas. The figures remain far away from hit films starring debutants, such as Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and Saiyaara. When Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, starring Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel, was released, it was a huge hit. The film brought in a little over 3 crore people to theatres in India. If we consider its earnings to today's value, it would have made around ₹ 600 crore in the country. In comparison, Saiyaara is expected to cross 2 crore footfalls. Saiyaara will enter its second week at the ticket window on Friday.

The Fantastic Four First Steps Final India Advance Bookings: Marvel's much anticipated flick sells decent 57,500 tickets in top chains for day 1

The Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman and starring Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and others, is at the fag end of its advance bookings in India. As at 11pm, the movie has sold around 55,000 tickets in top national chains like PVRInox and Cinepolis and the final advance number at 11:59pm should be 57,500 tickets or so. These are ordinary numbers for a Marvel flick, but the superhero brand has not been at its A-game since the last Spiderman movie in 2021. The Fantastic Four: First Steps Sells 57,500 Tickets In India's Top National Chains For Day 1 The Fantastic Four: First Steps ' pre-bookings were adversely affected by the screen-sharing issues. Bollywood movie Saiyaara is enjoying a dream run at the box office and that has made it difficult for Marvel's first family to get enough screens. This is a part and parcel of the movie business and it can't be said that the makers didn't see it coming when the advance bookings of Saiyaara opened. If not for the screen-sharing issue, the collections could have been say Rs 1 crore more than what it is likely to earn now. That's not much, and it proves that there certainly is a kind of a superhero fatigue in Asia. The Fantastic Four: First Steps Looks At A USD 225 Million Plus Global Weekend The biggie has excellent presales in North America, good presales in Europe and Oceania, and average presales in Asia. It is projected to collect USD 225 - 240 million over its first weekend globally, which is very good. If the word of mouth is favourable, it can leg to USD 700 million if not more. The Fantastic Four: First Steps Is Marvel's Last Movie Before Avengers: Doomsday The Fantastic Four: First Steps is Marvel's last movie before Avengers: Doomsday. Avengers: Doomsday is by far the biggest Marvel movie in terms of costs. There will be a high pressure of recovery with the global market for Hollywood movies, not as strong as 2019. However, if Doomsday strikes a chord, one can expect Secret Wars to blow the lids off, at the box office. The Fantastic Four: First Steps In Theatres The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hits theatres tomorrow, that is 25th July, 2025. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
