Woman files for divorce after ChatGPT unravels husband's alleged affair through coffee cup reading

Indian Express11-05-2025

As technology continues to evolve, ChatGPT has become one of the most-used AI applications in various aspects of life. In an unusual case, a Greek woman has reportedly filed for divorce after claiming that artificial intelligence uncovered her husband's infidelity by interpreting coffee cup grounds.
According to Greek City Times, the woman, married for over 12 years and a mother of two, sought help from ChatGPT in a modern twist on tasseography, the traditional fortune-telling method of reading leftover coffee patterns. Uploading photos of the grounds from both her and her husband's coffee cups, she asked the AI chatbot to analyse them.
What she received, she claimed, was startling. The AI allegedly warned her of a looming betrayal, describing her husband as being involved with a younger woman who was trying to destroy their family. The bot even named a mysterious woman with the initial 'E' as her husband's 'destined partner.'
Her husband, speaking to a local television station, dismissed the allegations as baseless. 'I laughed it off as nonsense. But she took it seriously. She asked me to leave, told our kids we were getting divorced, and then I got a call from a lawyer. That's when I realised this wasn't just a phase,' he said.
According to him, this wasn't his wife's first time believing in the mystical. He shared an earlier episode when she had relied on astrological predictions for nearly a year before finally moving on.
Within three days of the AI reading, she served formal divorce papers and refused to consider a mutual separation. His lawyer has since weighed in, emphasising that an AI-generated coffee reading holds no legal merit. 'He is innocent until proven otherwise,' the lawyer stated.
According to the report, the incident has stirred debate on Greek social media, with many users questioning the influence of technology and superstition in modern relationships. Legal experts have also chimed in, clarifying that claims made by artificial intelligence, particularly in such unconventional contexts, have no standing in court.
