NASA research planes to conduct low-altitude flights over Southern California
NASA's Student Airborne Research Program (SARP), an eight-week summer internship for top undergraduate STEM students, will conduct low-altitude flights over several areas in California. This includes areas like the Los Angeles Basin, the Salton Sea, and parts of the Central Valley. The aircraft will be collecting vital air quality data using specialized equipment onboard.
Two aircraft will be used in the mission: NASA's P-3 Orion, a four-engine turboprop flying out of Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, and a King Air B200, operated by Dynamic Aviation and contracted by NASA. Both will fly coordinated yet independent missions at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 feet—far below typical commercial airliners.

Residents may see the planes performing vertical spirals, circling over power plants and landfills, and making low passes along runways to collect air samples close to the surface. As explained by NASA officials, the flights may also include 'missed approaches' at local airports—standard aviation maneuvers where aircraft descend as if to land, then climb away without touching down.
'The SARP flights have become mainstays of NASA's Airborne Science Program, as they expose highly competitive STEM students to real-world data gathering within a dynamic flight environment,' said Brian Bernth, NASA's chief of flight operations at Wallops.
The mission is already underway on the East Coast, with flights taking place from June 22 to June 26 over Philadelphia, Baltimore and cities in Virginia, including Richmond and Hampton.
'Despite SARP being a learning experience for both the students and mentors alike, our P-3 is being flown and performing maneuvers in some of most complex and restricted airspace in the country,' said Bernth. 'Tight coordination and crew resource management is needed to ensure that these flights are executed with precision but also safely.'
This year's flights are part of a broader effort to engage future scientists and engineers in the field of earth science while simultaneously collecting critical data for environmental research.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX's Crew-11 astronaut mission to the International Space Station for NASA is go for launch. When Crew-11 launches, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will lift off from historic Launch Complex 39A here at NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC), sending a crew of four the ISS for a six-month stay. Mission managers with NASA and SpaceX all polled 'go' to proceed to count down towards a 12:09 p.m. ET (1609 GMT) launch attempt of the Crew-11 mission on Thursday (July 31). "I'm so eager to see this mission launch, but as always, we launch when we're ready. With a little luck, we'll see a launch soon, and we'll also see a crew come home soon," said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate, during a prelaunch briefing at KSC today (July 30). "But be patient with us. Let's make sure that the vehicle is ready to go and that our team is really certain before we hit the button." The four Crew-11 astronauts will dock with the ISS some 39 hours after launch. They will be flying inside SpaceX's Crew Dragon Endeavour spacecraft, flying on its milestone sixth flight. No other Crew Dragon has flown more than four times. Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, hailed the milestone in today's briefing. "As you know, this is a really important mission for us. It's our sixth flight of Dragon Endeavour. We worked very hard with SpaceX to complete all the reuse activities for this vehicle," Stich said. "We had certified the vehicles — the Dragons — for only five flights. Now we've completed all that work and we're really ready to go." Crew-11 consists of NASA astronaut Zena Cardman, who will serve as commander on her first trip to space. In a press briefing earlier this month, Cardman stressed how six-month stays on the ISS like the one she will embark on will help prepare NASA to send astronauts much farther into space. "Understanding how to live and work for long durations — going and staying — is a really interesting challenge, and I'm grateful that we've gotten the chance to do this — to hone our skills on the ISS, so that we can do this for longer durations on the moon," Cardman said. "The International Space Station, in my perspective, is an absolutely critical stepping stone as we think about going farther afield." Joining Cardman as mission pilot is veteran NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, making his fourth trip into space. Fincke previously trained to pilot Boeing's troubled Starliner spacecraft on its first operational mission, but was reassigned as delays and issues continue to plague the Starliner program. Alongside the two NASA astronauts are Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), making his second trip to the ISS while serving as Crew-11 mission specialist, and Oleg Platonov of Russia's space agency Roscosmos, mission specialist, making his first trip to space. Crew-11 will dock at 3 a.m. ET (0800 GMT) on Aug. 2 and will overlap with the Crew-10 astronauts for a few days to ensure a smooth handover before Crew-10 makes its way back to Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Radar satellite launched by India and NASA will track minuscule changes to Earth's land and ice
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA and India paired up to launch an Earth-mapping satellite on Wednesday capable of tracking even the slightest shifts in land and ice. The $1.3 billion mission will help forecasters and first responders stay one step ahead of floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions and other disasters, according to scientists. Rocketing to orbit from India, the satellite will survey virtually all of Earth's terrain multiple times. Its two radars — one from the U.S. and the other from India — will operate day and night, peering through clouds, rain and foliage to collect troves of data in extraordinary detail. Microwave signals beamed down to Earth from the dual radars will bounce back up to the satellite's super-sized antenna reflector perched at the end of a boom like a beach umbrella. Scientists will compare the incoming and outgoing signals as the spacecraft passes over the same locations twice every 12 days, teasing out changes as small as a fraction of an inch. 'Congratulations India!' India's minister of science and technology, Jitendra Singh, said via X once the satellite safely reached orbit. The mission 'will benefit the entire world community.' NASA's deputy associate administrator Casey Swails, part of a small delegation that traveled to India for the launch, said it 'really shows the world what our two nations can do. But more so than that, it really is a pathfinder for the relationship building.' It will take a full week to extend the satellite's 30-foot boom and open the 39-foot-in-diameter drum-shaped reflector made of gold-plated wire mesh. Science operations should begin by the end of October. Among the satellite's most pressing measurements: melting glaciers and polar ice sheets; shifting groundwater supplies; motion and stress of land surfaces prompting landslides and earthquakes; and forest and wetland disruptions boosting carbon dioxide and methane emissions. It's 'a first-of-its-kind, jewel radar satellite that will change the way we study our home planet and better predict a natural disaster before it strikes,' NASA's science mission chief Nicky Fox said ahead of liftoff. She was part of the NASA delegation that attended the launch in person. NASA is contributing $1.2 billion to the three-year mission; it supplied the low-frequency radar and reflector. The Indian Space Research Organization's $91 million share includes the higher-frequency radar and main satellite structure, as well as the launch from a barrier island in the Bay of Bengal. It's the biggest space collaboration between the two countries. The satellite called NISAR — short for NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar — will operate from a near-polar-circling orbit 464 miles high. It will join dozens of Earth observation missions already in operation by the U.S. and India.

Existing NASA Spacecraft Could Intercept the Weird Interstellar Object Cruising Into Our Star System
Earlier this month, astronomers noticed a mysterious object speeding toward the inner solar system from outside of our star system. It's an exceedingly rare occurrence, marking only the third confirmed interstellar object to have ventured into our solar system, all of which have been detected since 2017. Harvard astronomer and alien hunter Avi Loeb was quick to raise the tantalizing — albeit admittedly far-fetched — possibility that the object, dubbed 3I/ATLAS, could have been an alien probe sent to us by an intelligent civilization. And now, in a twist right out of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 "2001: A Space Odyssey," he's suggesting a way that we could use an existing spacecraft to intercept the object's path to test that very hypothesis. In a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper, the researcher argued that NASA's Juno spacecraft, which was designed to study Jupiter and launched in 2011, could get eerily close to 3I/ATLAS by March 14, 2026. Juno would have to apply a thrust of 1.66 miles per second on September 14, 2025, Loeb calculated, to intercept the mysterious object's path. "The close encounter of 3I/ATLAS to Jupiter provides a rare opportunity to shift Juno from its current orbit around Jupiter to intercept the path of 3I/ATLAS at its closest approach to Jupiter," he wrote in a new blog post about the proposal. While it's technically not a rendezvous — the object's "excessively high hyperbolic speed" wouldn't allow for such a meeting — Juno's arsenal of scientific instruments "can all be used to probe the nature of 3I/ATLAS from a close distance," Loeb argued. Whether the spacecraft, which has been soaring through space for 14 years now, would have enough fuel to even pull off such a stunt remains unclear. But Loeb argues it could "rejuvenate Juno's mission and extend its scientific lifespan beyond" the potential intercept some eight months from now. The news comes as scientists are still racing to get a better sense of 3I/ATLAS' exact nature. Last week, the recently inaugurated Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile had a closer look, finding that the object is roughly seven miles wide, making it the largest interstellar object ever spotted. The prevailing and most widely accepted theory suggests that 3I/ATLAS is a comet, with previous observations supporting the idea that its coma, or surrounding cloud of ice, dust, and gas, was anywhere up to 15 miles across. The Vera C. Rubin observations identified large amounts of dust and water ice surrounding its solid nucleus, as detailed in a July 17 preprint, further adding evidence that it's a comet. Yet many questions surrounding its origin remain a mystery. Some researchers believe it came from our galaxy's "thick disk," a dense layer that features chemically distinct populations of stars. Other researchers suggest it could be around three to 11 billion years old, dating it back to the earliest days of the Milky Way. It seems unlikely that NASA will find Loeb's suggestion compelling enough to fire up Juno's thrusters for an intercept. But it's an extremely rare opportunity to finally get a close glimpse of an interstellar visitor nonetheless — so hopefully they're at least checking his math to see if it's possible.
