Rahul Gandhi moves Jharkhand HC over non-bailable warrant in Amit Shah case
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has approached the Jharkhand High Court to challenge a non-bailable warrant issued against him by the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa, Bar and Bench reported. The warrant pertains to his remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As reported by The Hindu, this is the second such warrant issued by the Chaibasa court, which has directed Gandhi to appear before it on June 26. The court had earlier issued a non-bailable warrant on February 27 after Gandhi failed to appear and participate in the trial proceedings. Following that, Gandhi had moved the Jharkhand High Court, which stayed the execution of the first warrant.
Rahul Gandhi's controversial 2018 remarks
Rahul Gandhi's comments targeting the BJP during a speech at the AICC Plenary Session in New Delhi on March 18, 2018, have led to a legal faceoff. Gandhi is accused of referring to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders as 'murderers' and 'liars' during his address.
Gandhi had said, 'The people of this country will never accept a lying Bharatiya Janata Party leadership drunk with power because they know what the BJP is designed for.' He said, 'They will accept a man accused of murder as the President of BJP, but the people will never accept the same in the Congress Party.'
Legal trouble for Rahul Gandhi
Following initial hearings and witness statements, the case was transferred to the Special MP-MLA Court in Ranchi in February 2020 on the orders of the Jharkhand High Court. Subsequently, the High Court directed the matter back to the MP-MLA Court in Chaibasa.
The court took cognizance of the matter in February 2022 and issued summons to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, which his office received. In May 2022, Gandhi was granted interim protection from arrest in the case.
In February 2025, the Jharkhand High Court rejected Gandhi's plea to quash the criminal defamation case. The court noted that Rahul Gandhi had stated, 'BJP leaders are liars who are drunk with power,' and that 'BJP workers will accept a person accused of murder as their President.'
The court held that these statements are prima facie defamatory under Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code.

Missing for nine years, where is JNU student Najeeb Ahmed?
On October 15, 2016, Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, went missing. The 27-year-old, an MSc student at the School of Biotechnology, had allegedly gotten into a scuffle with some ABVP members before this. Nine years on, there is still no sign of him. At the time, Najeeb's mother had moved court, which later directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. In 2018, unable to make headway and finding no further evidence, the CBI filed a closure report. On June 5 this year, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court is likely to decide whether it will accept or decline the report. The case had sparked massive protests outside the JNU Vice-Chancellor's office in 2016; various student wings blamed the V-C for allegedly not acting decisively in the matter. In the years since, Najeeb's mother, Fatima Naees, has made fervent appeals to find her son. The Delhi Police had filed an FIR under Section 365 of the Indian Penal Code (kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person) and had also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for any information on the student. Along with this, they had identified nine people as suspects. In November 2016, dissatisfied with the efforts of the police, Naees decided to approach the Delhi High Court with a habeas corpus writ petition seeking his production. Claiming that the police's efforts were 'slow, misdirected and subjective', she had prayed for a court-monitored SIT (Special Investigation Team) to take over the case from the Delhi Police. As part of its probe, the police had sent wireless messages to the SSPs of all districts in the country on the day Najeeb went missing. They had also uploaded his details on ZIPNET, a tool for inter-state police coordination, especially to track missing persons. It also sent four teams along various routes, including Delhi-Agra, Delhi-Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Moradabad and Rampur in search of him. CCTV footage from Metro stations was also examined. On December 19 and 20 that year, 560 police officers also searched 1,019 acres of the JNU campus — including academic blocks, hostel complexes, water tanks and septic tanks. All these attempts eventually turned out to be futile. Six months later, on May 16, 2017, the High Court passed the case to the CBI. The CBI's investigation could also not reach a conclusion. On October 16, 2017, the Delhi High Court pulled up the central agency, stating that it wasn't showing the intent to find Najeeb. The High Court had also directed a forensic laboratory in Chandigarh to examine the mobile phones of the nine suspects. On May 11, 2018, the CBI had told the court that it found no evidence that there was any crime committed against Najeeb based on the findings of the lab. Three months later, the agency told the High Court that it had decided to file a closure report in the case since it had probed all angles and had still found nothing against the suspects. Of the nine phones sent to the lab in Chandigarh, two could not be analysed since they were not in a working condition. On April 2019, a Delhi court directed the CBI to give copies of all statements and documents related to the closure report to Najeeb's mother within two weeks. Naees had filed a protest petition against the CBI's closure report. The CBI's investigation involved questioning 26 persons, including JNU officials, staff, friends, and colleagues. It also involved examining mortuaries in 12 cities, along with scrutinising railway records for a year. As per the 8th status report filed by the central probe agency, Interpol was also roped in to help find Najeeb. The reward for finding him was also raised to Rs 10 lakh. Senior Advocate Colin Gonsalves, who represented Naees in the High Court, had argued that the CBI wasted a lot of time in tracing Najeeb. 'The one thing they should have done is custodial interrogation of the accused persons. Najeeb was getting threats a day before he disappeared. The fact that they failed to do this shows a complete mockery of the system,' he told The Indian Express. In an order dated October 8, 2018, Delhi High Court Justice S Muralidhar had said: 'In the present case, however, this court did accept the plea of the petitioner at the first instance and directed the investigation to be undertaken by the CBI. This court is, however, for reasons discussed hereafter, not persuaded that the CBI is tardy and slow in the investigation or that it has not taken steps that are required to be taken in the matter.' Recently, the CBI told Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari that they couldn't record the statement of the doctor at Safdarjung Hospital, where Najeeb was allegedly rushed after being injured in the scuffle, because no document pertaining to his visit existed. The CBI also alleged that he went back to the hostel without getting a medico-legal case report prepared. Meanwhile, in an order dated April 7, 2025, the court referred to Najeeb as 'deceased' instead of 'injured'. A few days later, they called it an 'inadvertent error' in a submission in court. Till date, no one knows where Najeeb is.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called on US President Donald Trump to facilitate dialogue with India as New Delhi continues to ramp up its efforts to expose Islamabad's role in cross-border terrorism that necessitated Operation Sindoor. Addressing an event at the US embassy in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif praised Donald Trump for his role in helping de-escalate the situation with India, a claim New Delhi has publicly denied. He also urged Washington to facilitate a comprehensive dialogue between the two nuclear neighbours, news agency ANI reported. The Pakistan PM was repeating the plea made by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who had claimed that Trump "deserves credit" for helping facilitate the cessation of hostilities between the two nations. "On 10 different occasions, he has taken credit for facilitating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan – and rightly so. He deserves that credit because it was his efforts that helped make the ceasefire possible. So, if the US is willing to help Pakistan in maintaining this ceasefire, it is reasonable to expect that an American role in arranging a comprehensive dialogue would also be beneficial for us," Bhutto had said. India has consistently rejected third-party mediation on bilateral issues with Pakistan, including the Kashmir issue. The Indian delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on Operation Sindoor visiting the US – one of seven such teams sent by the GOI – has said that Washington has understood India's position that there can be no talks with a gun pointed at the head. "I think the US has understood for some time now that India has a very clear position that there will be no talks with a gun pointed at our head... The problem is that we will not deal with people who are pointing a gun at our heads. I mean frankly, if your neighbour unleashes his Rottweilers to bite your children and in fact to do worse to your children, and then says, let's talk. You think he's going to talk until he either unleashes those Rottweilers or locks them up in a kennel, or puts them to sleep. It's as simple as that. You're not going to talk to people who are pointing guns at your temples. It's not going to happen," said Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the all-party delegation to the United States. Tharoor also slammed the Pakistani side for making claims that it was as much a victim of terrorism as India was. "This (Pakistan) delegation is going around saying we are also victims of terrorism, we have lost more lives to terrorism than India has. We turn around and say- Whose fault is that? As Hillary Clinton famously said 10 years ago. You can't breed vipers in your backyard and expect them to bite only your why they (Pakistan) are now getting terrorists attacked by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, but who created the Taliban from which the Tehrik-i-Taliban broke off? We all know the answer to that, so let Pakistan look inside it and let it do some serious interior reflection before it goes around pleading innocence and deniability and everything else," the Congress MP added Echoing that sentiment, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, who is also a member of the delegation, said that Pakistan speaking of peace was like the devil quoting the scriptures. "Bhutto has been calling his delegation a peace delegation, and it is quite ironic that the Pakistani delegation is speaking the language of peace. It's like the Devil quoting from the scriptures. For a country that is trying to create fake heroes by promoting failed generals to field marshal, they don't know what true leaders look like. Pakistan has been surviving on cheap Chinese imports, including military hardware, which spectacularly failed on the battlefield.. So perhaps it is hard for them to digest high-quality, high-calibre military hardware as well as strong democratic leadership on the other side of the border," he said.

Contribute now New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government's decision to set up a trust for the management of Banke Bihari Mandir in Vrindavan has sparked opposition from priests in Mathura who has termed the move of the BJP government in the state as 'anti-Brahmin.' 'It was because of the penance of our ancestors that God had appeared here. The temple became revered under their supervision, but the government is now taking it over on the pretext of regulating its management,' said Tarachand Goswami, the former chairman of the temple on Wednesday (June 4) reported The Telegraph. Another priest, Vishnu Goswami accused the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government of deliberately trying to snatch the livelihood of Brahmins. Last week, the state government had cleared an ordinance that paved the way for setting up the Shri Banke Bihariji Mandir Nyas Trust. The trust is entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the management of the shrine and its everyday rituals. Priests from the Goswami sect have been managing the temple since the last few hundred years. Some Goswami priests have said that if the government didn't review its decision to take over the temple's management, they will take away the idol, which they say was installed by their ancestors in 1864. A government that confiscates temples cannot be secular. The government is constantly trying to regulate religion with an ulterior motive. The government appears against the Goswami tradition and wants to have its official priests,' said Swami Avimukteshwaranand, the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath in Uttarakhand who has been staying in Mathura since last few days.
