UFC Fight Night 252 headliner Henry Cejudo embracing underdog status vs. Song Yadong

USA Today20-02-2025

SEATTLE – Henry Cejudo believes he's in a dire position heading into UFC Fight Night 252. Yet, at the same time, he also embraces being an underdog against Song Yadong.
Cejudo (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC), a former two-division UFC champion, meets a hungry contender in Song (21-8-1 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) in the main event at Climate Pledge Arena. It's a rare headliner in which both fighters are coming off losses, but 'Triple C' is confident he will get the job done against a much younger competitor.
'I'm 11 years his elder,' Cejudo told reporters at Wednesday's media day. 'He's an explosive fighter, really good at countering. He's a guy that could shut your lights off with one punch. But I think the same reason why his greatest gift is also his worst enemy, too. That gas tank could completely go to straight to 'E.'
'I love the fact they're giving me a younger fighter. I love the fact that my back is against the wall. There's a chip on my shoulder. I love the fact that I'm an underdog because these are the moments where I shine.'
Cejudo, 38, retired from fighting as champion immediately after a victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 in May 2020. After taking some time to himself and start a family, the competitive itch brought the Olympian wrestler back to MMA.
However, his return hasn't been successful. He lost both fights since returning, although to his credit, the competition couldn't get any tougher. Former champ Aljamain Sterling eked out a split decision at UFC 288 and his teammate and current champion Merab Dvalishvili won a dominant unanimous decision at UFC 298.
Cejudo has only lost back-to-back fights once in his career, and rebounded from that by winning six consecutive fights, a run that included capturing the flyweight and bantamweight titles. As he looks to pick up his first win since coming out of retirement, Cejudo says he's still looking to make a championship push, potentially at flyweight.
'I could be going back down,' Cejudo said. 'With a victory here, I don't think there's anybody at flyweight that could sell the division. I think there's too many dry people at that weight division.
'I feel like what I've done in combat sports, particularly the flyweights, saving that division, back in 2020, there could be a resurrection there. … First things first: get through Song, get through the dong, and do it that way.'

UFC books Bellator notable Mandel Nallo vs. Cage Warriors champ Samuel Silva for DWCS

UFC books Bellator notable Mandel Nallo vs. Cage Warriors champ Samuel Silva for DWCS MMA worlds will collide as a former Bellator knockout artist and a current Cage Warriors champion will collide this summer with a UFC contract on the line. Tristar's Mandel Nallo and Cage Warriors lightweight champion Samuel Silva are set to square off Sept. 2 on Dana White's Contender Series at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Nallo (13-3) competed eight times for Bellator from 2017 to 2023. He compiled a 4-3 record with one no contest, as the promotion struggled to find him fights. That problem continued when Nallo hit free agency in early 2023. Since then, he's 4-0 in MMA with an additional win in bareknuckle MMA. All five of those fights he finished inside the distance. Silva (13-4-1) empathically turned heads in March when he upset Cage Warriors champion George Hardwick in an epic five-round battle. Silva won the bout via unanimous decision to extend his winning streak to five. The current DWCS lineup for Sept. 2 includes:

Adam Silver Provides Update on NBA Expansion Amid Seattle Rumors

Adam Silver Provides Update on NBA Expansion Amid Seattle Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver shared an update on where the league stands in terms of adding new teams. Rumors about a potential expansion have circulated for years now, but it seems as though that possibility is closer than before. Advertisement Silver attended Game 2 of the 2025 NBA Finals in Oklahoma City before the Thunder clashed with the Indiana Pacers. During a press conference, he told reporters the league was studying the possibility of adding new teams to the competition, naming the upcoming owners meeting in July as a crucial point for these plans. With Las Vegas and Seattle being named as the strongest candidates to receive a franchise, the expectations are high, but nothing will be formalized until that gathering. NBA commissioner Adam Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images During Wednesday's installment of "The Dan Patrick Show," Silver was asked about the expansion plans. He had a different approach this time, saying they are studying every possibility before making a decision. Advertisement "There are cities worth thinking about," Silver said. "It's not obvious to me we should expand. I think it's likely over time, we will, and the reason I say it's not obvious is because, as a global business, adding another U.S. city, arguably, it's unclear how much growth we'll get as result to that, and when we're adding expansion franchises, you're deluding the competition to more teams. Speaking on the cities that could join the league next, he explained what they're looking at. "I do believe certain markets can be added to the NBA, and that's where we're gonna look at. I think part of it is geographic, it's a big country and we're making sure we're represented all around the country, and over time, maybe there's more we can do in Canada or Mexico City. I don't wanna say specific cities today because many have reached out to us to say they're interested." Seattle, which lost the SuperSonics in 2008, is always mentioned as the first city that should get an expansion team. ESPN reported in September that the Thunder could give the Sonics their franchise history back from 1967 to 2007 if they finally got an expansion team in Seattle. Advertisement Las Vegas, which has the Knights in the NHL, the Raiders in the NFL and the Aces in the WNBA, has been considered another frontrunner to get this approval. Two years ago, RedBird Capital founder and managing partner Gerry Cardinale expressed his desire to bring an NBA expansion team to "Sin City" in partnership with none other than LeBron James and Fenway Sports Group. The interest is at an all-time high in these two cities, but this summer appears to be crucial for any decision owners make.
