UFC Fight Night 252 headliner Henry Cejudo embracing underdog status vs. Song Yadong
Cejudo (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC), a former two-division UFC champion, meets a hungry contender in Song (21-8-1 MMA, 10-3-1 UFC) in the main event at Climate Pledge Arena. It's a rare headliner in which both fighters are coming off losses, but 'Triple C' is confident he will get the job done against a much younger competitor.
'I'm 11 years his elder,' Cejudo told reporters at Wednesday's media day. 'He's an explosive fighter, really good at countering. He's a guy that could shut your lights off with one punch. But I think the same reason why his greatest gift is also his worst enemy, too. That gas tank could completely go to straight to 'E.'
'I love the fact they're giving me a younger fighter. I love the fact that my back is against the wall. There's a chip on my shoulder. I love the fact that I'm an underdog because these are the moments where I shine.'
Cejudo, 38, retired from fighting as champion immediately after a victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 in May 2020. After taking some time to himself and start a family, the competitive itch brought the Olympian wrestler back to MMA.
However, his return hasn't been successful. He lost both fights since returning, although to his credit, the competition couldn't get any tougher. Former champ Aljamain Sterling eked out a split decision at UFC 288 and his teammate and current champion Merab Dvalishvili won a dominant unanimous decision at UFC 298.
Cejudo has only lost back-to-back fights once in his career, and rebounded from that by winning six consecutive fights, a run that included capturing the flyweight and bantamweight titles. As he looks to pick up his first win since coming out of retirement, Cejudo says he's still looking to make a championship push, potentially at flyweight.
'I could be going back down,' Cejudo said. 'With a victory here, I don't think there's anybody at flyweight that could sell the division. I think there's too many dry people at that weight division.
'I feel like what I've done in combat sports, particularly the flyweights, saving that division, back in 2020, there could be a resurrection there. … First things first: get through Song, get through the dong, and do it that way.'

It's a matchup many fans have circled on the card, given both fighters' styles. Vallejos, who's developing into a fan favorite knockout artist in the UFC, can't wait to test his power on Silva's chin. "I know that I can knock him out, and I will do it on Saturday," Vallejos told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "I know I can knock him out, like I have with other people, who at the time had never been knocked out. This won't be an exception." To some, Vallejos' confidence in getting the knockout may seem like he's overlooking Silva, but that's not the case. "It's a tough fight," Vallejos explained. "I feel like this is a new experience. He's got good boxing, good kicks, good clinch, and wrestling. I think he's going to test me and put me in a spot where I have to show my talent." Despite getting a brutal, first-round KO in his UFC debut this past March, "El Chino" was left without a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus. He's hoping to get his this time around with the type of knockout he plans on delivering. "This time it's not getting away," Vallejos said when asked about the bonus. "Last time, we had seven finishes in one night. I don't think I can have that bad luck again and be in a card with that many finishes. This time it will be mine."

Hyun Sung Park Tatsuro Taira (16-1) rose through the UFC flyweight ranks fairly quickly. He joined the UFC in May 2022 with a record of 10-0, and after winning the Shooto flyweight title. Taira opened his UFC career with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario in May 2022. He followed that with back-to-back submission wins in contests where he earned 'Performance of the Night' bonuses, defeating C.J. Vergara and Jesús Santos Aguilar. Wins over Edgar Chairez and Carlos Hernandez in 2023 followed. In June, Taira got the first true test of his UFC career when he faced Alex Perez in a main event on a UFC Fight Night card at the Apex. At the time, Taira was the No. 13 ranked fighter in the UFC's flyweight division, and Perez, who had fought Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC 125-pound title in 2020, was ranked No. 5. The fight ended when Taira took the back of his opponent in the center of the Octagon and forced him to the mat, putting enormous pressure on Perez's knee and causing an injury that brought the fight to a halt in the second stanza. From all appearances, and judging from his comments after the victory, the move that finished the contest was a designed technique. That win put Taira at No. 5 in the UFC rankings, earning him a shot at former UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Royval, who entered the October 2024 contest as the No. 1 ranked in the UFC's 125-pound division. Royval and Taira put on a 'Fight of the Night' bonus-winning scrap, but the more experienced Royval took home the split-decision win, handing Taira the first loss of his professional career. He returned to the Octagon in March, scoring a first-round submission win over Carlos Hernandez at UFC Vegas 106. I wrote of the 29-year-old at the time, 'HyunSung Park looked excellent at UFC Vegas 106, moving to 3-0 in the UFC's flyweight division. Park used effective striking to hurt Carlos Hernandez against the fence. That striking made Hernandez move to the clinch, but Park showed his overall MMA ability in scoring a takedown, which led to a back take and a rear naked choke sub at 2:26 of Round 1. The 29-year-old Park looks ready for a test in his next outing as he has picked up three finishes in three UFC outings.' He gets that test in a big way and on short notice on Saturday night. Park has only gone the distance once in his MMA career. When the betting odds opened for this matchup, Taira was a -350 betting favorite over Park, who came in as the +275 betting underdog. Bettors are taking the underdog in the hopes of an upset. Park has earned 74 percent of the bets, while picking up 75 percent of the handle. The good news heading into this fight is that Park is not coming into UFC Vegas 108 fully unprepared. He was booked opposite Steve Erceg for next week's UFC Vegas 109 card, so he will at least face Taira with most of a fight camp behind him. However, that fight was scheduled for three rounds, while this contest is a five-round affair. Taira is a good striker, he is better on the mat. However, he is aware how fights are scored, so he'll engage in striking before moving to his grappling. Park, on the other hand looks to grapple first. Taira is the more well-rounded fighter in this contest and that will allow him to carry the day. The pick is for Taira to win via stoppage. I see him scoring a knockdown against Park, but I'm unsure if the finish will be more strikes or if Taira follows things to the ground to get the sub. Considering Taira's grappling skills, go with the submission. They wanted to move him desperately. But nobody was offering anything,' Nightengale said on 'The Foul Territory Show.' 'A few GMs have told me that at the trade deadline, you never get much for position players. Even when JD Martinez got moved to the Diamondbacks years ago, they gave up a bag of balls for the guy. 'They were very disappointed that the Yankees didn't go after him, and then the Reds went to Hayes instead of going after him. The market for [Suarez] cratered.' The 34-year-old is on pace to hit over 50 homers and well over 100 RBIs this year. Along with the acquisition of Josh Naylor a couple of weeks ago, the Mariners now have a pair of big bats to go along with MVP candidate Cal Raleigh in the second half. They are a real threat to get to the World Series in October.
