Gerik bus crash: State to give RM1,000 aid to victims' families, says Perak MB
IPOH: Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad was fighting back tears after visiting the families of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who perished in an accident in Gerik on Monday (June 9) morning.
Speaking to reporters at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital mortuary, Saarani was visibly upset over the incident.
"On behalf of the state, we extend our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. May the souls of the departed be showered with Allah's mercy and placed among the righteous," he said.
A total of 14 UPSI students and one bus attendant were killed in the 9am accident along the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik. The bus, which was carrying 42 students, overturned while another car, carrying four people, veered into a ditch.
Saarani also offered prayers for those injured in the crash and being treated in hospitals.
"To the students and others still receiving treatment, whether in critical condition or not, we pray for their full and swift recovery so they may continue their studies at UPSI," he said.
Acknowledging the emotional toll on the families, Saarani assured that support was available for them.
"I believe this tragedy will leave a lasting impact on the families. UPSI has counselling services available and I hope they find some comfort and strength in accepting this as part of Allah's will," he added.
Saarani said the state government would allocate RM1,000 to each of the affected families.
"The financial aid is small, but we hope it helps cover basic needs, such as accommodation for the family, food, or other expenses. We know not every family is financially well-off and this is the least we can do to ease their burden," he said, while thanking the police for pledging to ensure the remains of the victims are brought back to their respective homes.

Restricting night travel among proposals after Gerik bus tragedy
PUTRAJAYA: The Higher Education Ministry has received various recommendations from relevant parties on measures to prevent tragedies like the crash which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on Monday. Its Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said that among the suggestions received was a proposal for university students to travel during the day, instead of at night, to enhance safety. "Some have suggested that university students and undergraduates should travel during the day rather than at night, to enhance safety," he told the media after the 'Luncheon Talk with Editors' session, in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, at his ministry, here, today. Zambry also said that he had been informed of a separate accident involving an express bus, early this morning, which reportedly had students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) among its passengers. "I only received information about the accident this morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries," he said. In the tragic incident early yesterday morning, 15 UPSI students lost their lives when the bus they were traveling in overturned at Km53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. Meanwhile, media reported that 28 passengers, including 13 UMPSA students, survived after their express bus crashed into the rear of a trailer at Km161.5 of the East Coast Highway (LPT), eastbound yesterday. – Bernama

RM1 million boost for Kampung Temerlok through MMEA community programme
IPOH: A total of RM1 million has been allocated for the development of Kampung Temerlok in Trong, near Taiping, under the MADANI Adopted Village initiative carried out by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the agency's efforts now extend beyond maritime security, with a renewed focus on uplifting inland rural communities. 'Today, MMEA proves that our role goes beyond safeguarding the seas. We are also committed to serving the people through community-based programmes and targeted outreach efforts,' he said during the MMEA's Qurban and Spiritual programme held in the village today. Among the five key projects to be funded through the special allocation from the Finance Ministry is the construction and repair of the Sungai Tok Lin fishermen's jetty, a vital economic lifeline for local fishermen. Other projects include roof repairs at Al-Mahmudiah Religious School, refurbishment of the Flood Relief Centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Temerlok, maintenance and repair works at Masjid Al-Mahmudiah, and cleaning of the mosque grounds and the nearby Muslim cemetery. Masjid Al-Mahmudiah also received two air-conditioning units, installed in its meeting room. More than 150 MMEA personnel took part in a gotong-royong (communal work) with villagers to spruce up the village, mosque, and cemetery. Mohd Rosli added that the agency also donated three cows for the Aidiladha sacrificial rites, with meat distributed to 200 residents, including senior citizens, single mothers, and underprivileged families.
