‘Despite crushing defeat, Modi remains unlearned'
This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. I would like to add that since 1947, Pakistan and India have fought five wars—1947, 1965, 1971, 1999, and most recently from May 5 to May 10, 2025.
Each war, regardless of its military outcome, has been a loss for the people: lives lost, families torn apart, economies devastated, and generations scarred. Estimates suggest that the cumulative economic loss from these conflicts runs into hundreds of billions of dollars—conservative estimates place the direct and indirect costs at over $250 billion for India and $100 billion for Pakistan, excluding the immeasurable human toll.
The 2025 war alone, lasting merely five days, is believed to have cost both nations approximately $100 billion in combined economic damage, infrastructure losses, disrupted trade, and lost productivity. The pattern is predictable: every war begins with heightened rhetoric, spirals into military confrontation, and ultimately ends at the negotiating table—often right where it all started. So, why not choose the table first and save countless lives and resources? Why not learn from the lessons of history, where every war has brought more pain than gain, more wounds than wins, and more bitterness than breakthroughs?
Central to this perpetual conflict is the Kashmir issue—a festering wound that has fueled tensions for decades. Until this core dispute is resolved in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, lasting peace will remain elusive. Kashmir is not just a piece of land; it is a symbol of unresolved grievances, a humanitarian crisis, and the spark that has ignited many of the wars between the two countries. While international actors have offered their good offices to mediate a solution, India continues to resist external facilitation, insisting on bilateral dialogue while simultaneously rejecting meaningful negotiations. This stalemate serves no one — least of all the people of Kashmir, who continue to suffer the most.

In a statement, the FO said such remarks were a deliberate attempt to divert international attention from the serious and persistent human rights violations being committed by Indian forces in the region. 'It is deeply regrettable that the Indian Prime Minister has once again levelled unfounded allegations against Pakistan regarding the Pahalgam incident, without offering any evidence,' the statement said. 'Statements and claims cannot alter the legal and historical reality of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,' it added. Responding to India's claims of development in the occupied territory, the FO said such assertions stand in stark contrast to the situation on the ground, which is marked by a heavy military presence and systematic suppression of fundamental rights. 'There are arbitrary arrests being carried out, and systematic efforts are underway to alter the demographic composition of IIOJK, in clear violation of international law, including the Geneva Conventions,' the statement maintained. The FO also reiterated Pakistan's principled support for the Kashmiri people in their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination. 'Pakistan remains steadfast in its support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their inalienable right to self-determination,' it added. Earlier in the day, Modi alleged that Pakistan had targeted tourists in Pahalgam as part of a 'conspiracy' to instigate communal unrest and disrupt the economic lifelines of the region. 'Pakistan is against humanity, tourism, and the livelihood of Kashmiris and hence attacked tourists in Pahalgam,' he claimed. He described the attack as an assault on 'insaniyat and Kashmiriyat,' adding that 'India will not bow to terrorism,' and that youth in the region were united in the fight against it.

Countrywide expansion: Halan receives licence from State Bank of Pakistan
KARACHI: Halan Microfinance Bank ('the Bank'), a Pakistani microfinance bank owned by MNT-Halan, Egypt and the MENA region's first fintech unicorn, has received a national license from the State Bank of Pakistan, allowing it to expand outside Sindh to the rest of the country. The national license permits the Bank to launch and manage financial services, including branchless banking, cards, mobile banking, retailer-based transactions, and wallet services. These services will complement the Bank's current product suite, which includes microfinance, salary advances, pensions, current accounts, and savings accounts. Commenting on this development, Mounir Nakhla, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of MNT-Halan, said that securing a national license is a major step in our journey to serve more people and businesses across Pakistan. KP govt, cement industry agree to increase cement royalty
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and cement industry have agreed on increasing cement royalty per ton from Rs 250 to Rs 350. They have further agreed to implement a 10% increase in royalty for the first two years, followed by a 7.5% increase over the next three years. Both parties agreed during a meeting of the cement manufacturers with the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Khan Gandapur in Islamabad on Thursday. The meeting focused on issues facing the cement industry, their potential solutions, and the promotion of the cement sector in the province. Speaking on the occasion, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, has emphasised that the development of the industrial sector is essential for eliminating unemployment in the province. He said that the provincial government is extending all possible facilities and support to investors in this regard. The provincial government has established its own mining company with the purpose to ensure the efficient management and exploration of mineral resources,' he said. He added that efforts are also underway to introduce modern machinery, technologies, and methodologies in the mining sector to minimize wastage of precious mineral resources. This is an effective management of minerals, through which the provincial government is increasing its revenue—an essential step toward making the province financially strong and self-sustaining, he remarked. The chief minister assured the delegation of full government support for promoting cement industry in the province. He also invited the delegation to invest in the value addition of minerals such as gypsum, placer gold, and other mineral products within the province. He highlighted the significant potential for gypsum and other important minerals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which needs to be explored. The government, he said is actively taking steps to encourage value addition of mineral products within the province and will provide all possible incentives and support to investors in this sector. He invited the delegation to invest in the development of the provincial power transmission line. He stated that electricity generated from local power plants will be provided to industries at subsidized rates through the provincial transmission line—an initiative critical for industrial growth and unemployment reduction in the province. The delegates on the occasion, welcomed the Chief Minister's invitation to invest in mining and transmission line projects and expressed keen interest in further investment opportunities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
