Airplane mode: Do we really need it in 2025? Experts weigh in

Your phone buzzes with notifications as you settle into your seat, then comes the familiar announcement: 'Please ensure all electronic devices are switched to airplane mode.'
But as airlines from the world over roll out 5G services that let passengers make calls mid-flight, the question really is – does this decades-old ritual still makes sense?
And, what is airplane mode really about?
How airplane mode began
The introduction of airplane mode in mobile devices was driven by aviation safety regulations introduced in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As mobile phone usage became more widespread, regulators raised concerns that radio signals from these devices could interfere with aircraft navigation and communication systems. While conclusive evidence of such interference was limited, aviation authorities adopted a cautious approach.
To comply with these regulations, mobile manufacturers began integrating a setting that would disable a device's ability to send or receive wireless signals.
The feature, known as airplane mode or flight mode, was designed to switch off cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections without powering down the device entirely. Nokia was among the first companies to introduce this feature on its Symbian-based phones in the early 2000s.
Airplane mode soon became standard across smartphones, tablets and laptops, allowing passengers to use their devices offline during flights.
As aircraft systems evolved and some airlines began offering in-flight Wi-Fi and Bluetooth services, regulators allowed passengers to selectively enable certain wireless functions while maintaining compliance with safety protocols.
Today, the use of airplane mode remains mandated by most aviation authorities, particularly during take-off and landing, although global standards continue to evolve as aircraft technology and passenger connectivity demands increase.
But does this really affect flight operations?
Gabriel Melikian, an aviation specialist and UAE industry veteran, said he 'never came across an incident that a mobile phone brought an aircraft down, or indeed, had an emergency landing because of interference with flight controls.'
The revelation comes as global airlines introduce 5G technology onboard aircraft, allowing passengers to make calls and use data services without switching to airplane mode—contradicting decades of safety protocols.
While, airplane mode was created to prevent electronic devices from interfering with aircraft navigation and communication systems, Melikian suggests the feature should have been called 'Standby Mode' instead, because 'the emitted signals can also interfere with hospital equipment, office computers, and many diagnostics equipment which are susceptible to radio waves signals, not just aircrafts.'
The primary concern centres on radio signals from mobile phones creating buzzing sounds in flight crew headsets.
'Radio signals emitted by mobile phones within an aircraft can be disturbing/annoying to say the least; as they sometimes can be heard over the headset of the flight crew, in the form of high pitch intermittent buzzing sound,' Melikian explained.
As an example, he warned that if over 100 passengers having phones switched on simultaneously, 'the flight crew will just be overwhelmed by buzzing sounds on their headsets' during critical phases like takeoff and landing.
Despite regulatory restrictions by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC), there remains 'NO scientific proof' that mobile devices actually cause interference with aircraft control or navigation systems, according to Melikian.
Echoing the sentiment, Saj Ahmad, an aerospace and aviation analyst from the UK, confirmed that 'there's never been a known incident of a phone interfering with a flight,' yet airlines continue mandating flight mode to prevent phones emitting radio frequency signals.
However, older aircraft remain more susceptible to interference. Melikian noted that from his experience, 'older navigation systems such as (ADF/HSI) Automatic Direction Finder and Horizontal Situation Indicator, while on the ground experienced some anomalies.'
He explained that 'many older airplanes and the bulk of the general aviation fleet are still flying around with ADF/HIS navigation systems,' though this does not apply to modern aircraft used by airlines, which rely on satellite navigation and electromagnetically shielded instruments.
In addition, European Union and UK regulations have shifted significantly with 5G technology implementation, Melikian said.
Airlines can now provide 5G services onboard, with the deadline for member states to make 5G frequency bands available for aircraft set at June 30, 2023.
The changes allow passengers to make calls, send texts, stream videos, and access applications during flights without airplane mode.
However, Melikian described current guidance as 'very inconsistent and confusing' because airplane mode remains recommended for safety reasons despite the technological advances.
Mobile phones struggle to maintain connections during flight due to the speed of aircraft and physical barriers.
'A fast-moving aircraft can confuse the ground-based cellular telephone network, as a phone in flight will keep searching for a signal, and won't be able to receive any signal due to lose line of sight of the signal, plus the metal construction of the aircraft hull prevents signal going through,' Melikian said.
Phones become 'inoperative' once aircraft climb above 3,000 feet in most cases.
So, what is the role of Wi-Fi and cellular networks in aircraft?
Wi-Fi and cellular networks operate as separate technologies using different approaches to connect devices. Ahmad explained that 'Wi-Fi is used for more short-range connections like in an office, whereas cellular relies on connectivity to cell towers for signals and communications.'
Airplane mode suspends radio frequency, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi capabilities across all systems. In addition, Ahmad noted that given advancements in both aircraft systems and mobile technology, 'while both can co-exist, it makes sense to keep the rules in place to de-risk the possibility of operational hindrance to pilots and their airplane.'
Melikian particularly highlighted lithium battery risks as more significant than interference concerns, calling it 'the most dangerous item on your carry-on luggage is the Lithium battery in the phone.'
'Lithium batteries are a component of many items in our daily lives. Your mobile phone, your laptop, table or even cameras are powered by rechargeable lithium batteries. When damaged, short-circuited or overheated, these batteries can catch fire,' he said.
Regulatory bodies ICAO and IATA require portable electronic devices to be carried in hand baggage rather than checked luggage because damaged or overheated lithium batteries can catch fire, Melikian said.
Spare batteries and power banks are limited to two per person and must be individually protected against short-circuits.
'They should not be recharged while on board the aircraft,' Melikian warned, noting he personally has observed passengers charging devices with battery banks and seat sockets, which 'should not be permitted as batteries do heat up when getting charged, or worse.'
Historical context reveals commercial motivations behind phone restrictions. Melikian recalled that when mobile phones became popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s, 'you were not allowed to use them on-board, which was at the same time the airlines started introducing on-board telephones by each armrest; just swipe the credit card, dial and talk, which was good revenue.'
He further explained that if mobile phones truly posed flight safety risks, 'no mobiles will be allowed on board, period' and questioned whether 'the airline, pilots and cabin crew would hardly rely on passengers to activate the airplane mode if the consequences are that the phone might interfere with the flight controls and navigation systems of the aircraft.'
Ahmad identified passenger comfort as a non-safety reason for maintaining phone restrictions, noting that 'the last thing many want to be subject to is fellow passengers have loud, full-blown or lengthy conversations.'
He highlighted the growing trend of digitally detoxing on flights, where passengers engage with no entertainment or devices. Despite questioning the necessity of airplane mode, both experts recommend compliance with current regulations.
'The industry always tries to shield itself from 'uncertainty' so when there is no conclusive evidence based on scientific or crash investigations then they keep the rule in place for 'just in case,' Melikian said.
He also explained that while the risk of interference is relatively low, 'the cumulative effect' of many devices transmitting signals could increase the chances of disrupting critical aircraft systems, especially during take-off and landing.
'Regulatory bodies like the Civil Aviation Authority continue to mandate airplane mode as a safety precaution, despite advancements in technology, again, playing it safe rather than be sorry,' Melikian said, suggesting that it is better for passengers 'switch the mobile phone off and save the battery' rather than using airplane mode.
He also warned that phones left on without airplane mode activation result in 'drained battery at the end of the journey, as the phone will be working overtime searching for communication signal.'
'As with any topic, there will be pros and cons – it's a rather broadly accepted facet of travel that flight mode is something we all do (or should do!), similar to how we comply with security checks before boarding. While there will never be consensus for either argument, the status quo as it is today infers that compliance with airline and cabin crew directives means that there is unlikely to be any wholesale changes to current practices,' Ahmad concluded.

The upbeat commentary underscores how surging demand for the new technology is shielding the tech giants from tariff-driven economic uncertainty hobbling other sectors. "As companies like Alphabet and Meta race to deliver on the promise of AI, capital expenditures are shockingly high and will remain elevated for the foreseeable future," said Debra Aho Williamson, founder and chief analyst at Sonata Insights. But if their core businesses remain strong, "it will buy them more time with investors and provide confidence that the billions being spent on infrastructure, talent and other tech-related expenses will be worthwhile," she added. Microsoft shares rose 4% on Thursday, with the Windows maker crossing $4 trillion in market value - a milestone only chip giant Nvidia had reached before it. Meta was up even more, rising 11.3% adding around $200 billion to its market value of about $1.75 trillion. Amazon slipped 7% after-market, after rising 1.7% in regular trading, on disappointing cloud computing results. All the companies have faced intense scrutiny from investors over their ballooning capital expenditures, which were expected to total $330 billion this year before the latest earnings. And until a few days ago, the Magnificent Seven stocks were also trailing the SP 500 in year-to-date performance. SILENCING DOUBTS Microsoft said on Wednesday it would spend a record $30 billion in the current quarter, after better-than-expected sales and an above-estimate forecast for its Azure cloud computing business showcased the growing returns on its massive AI bets. The prediction puts Microsoft on track to potentially outspend its rivals over the next year. It came after Google-parent Alphabet beat revenue expectations and raised its spending forecast by $10 billion to $85 billion for the year. Microsoft also disclosed for the first time the dollar figure for Azure sales and the number of users for its Copilot AI tools, whose adoption has long been a concern for investors. It said Azure generated more than $75 billion in sales in its last fiscal year, while Copilot tools had over 100 million users. Overall, around 800 million customers use AI tools peppered across Microsoft's sprawling software empire. "It's the kind of result that quickly silences any doubts about cloud or AI demand," said Josh Gilbert, market analyst at eToro. "Microsoft is more than justifying its spending." Amazon, for its part, said it expected second-half spending roughly at the same clip as its second-quarter total of $31.4 billion, suggesting it would spend around $118 billion for the full year. It also said that costs driven by its efforts to catch up in Silicon Valley's intensifying AI race would push 2026 expense growth rate above 2025's pace. Better-than-expected sales growth in the April-June period and an above-estimate revenue forecast for the current quarter, however, assured investors that strength in the social media giant's core advertising business can support the massive outlays. "The big boys are back," said Brian Mulberry, portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management, which holds shares in all three major U.S. cloud providers. "This simply proves the Magnificent Seven is still magnificent at this moment in time."

Development of 380 technology centers in local municipalities, villages, cities, and new urban communities has been completed. 156 government services are available through the fixed "Khadamat Masr" centers in Sharm El Sheikh, Mokattam, Aswan, and Alexandria; citizens have completed over 300,000 transactions as of the end of June 2025. The development and delivery of 276 centers within the Mobile Technology Centers project for providing government services to citizens has been completed. H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, received a report on the implementation status of projects for the Ministry's Information Infrastructure Center for the Egyptian Planning System. The center is executing several projects, including the integration of spatial information infrastructure to develop the Egyptian planning system, projects for developing health services and initiatives (sustainability of births, deaths, and vaccinations), the project for developing financial and banking information systems at the National Investment Bank, and improving government performance in cooperation with the Administrative Prosecution Authority. Other projects include the development of technology centers in districts, cities, and new urban communities, improving the operational efficiency of real estate registry offices, as well as the mobile technology centers and fixed "Misr Services" centers. H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat emphasized the pivotal role of the Information Infrastructure Center for the Egyptian Planning System, in light of the significant importance the state places on digital transformation and developing services provided to citizens. This is aimed at the comprehensive development of government policies and performance, to keep pace with the aspirations and challenges of the next phase, and to continue the path of structural and institutional reform. H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat noted that the Ministry is working to advance economic development efforts and close sectoral development gaps by relying on data-driven policies, which reflects the importance of digital transformation in the state's vision. _*Technology Centers in Local Municipalities*_ The report highlighted the project to develop technology centers in local municipalities and new city authorities. This project aims to provide citizens and investors with civilized, fast, accurate, and integrated services by coordinating with governorates to establish technology centers. These centers provide services to citizens and send them through a smart system to back-end departments, linking them with participating government bodies. This enhances performance efficiency, tightens control, and improves monitoring methods using information technology at the level of governorate general offices, centers, cities, districts, rural units (Haya Karima), and new city authorities. The development of service delivery locations in local municipalities (general offices, cities and centers, districts, and new city authorities) for 380 centers has been completed. This includes 316 centers in cities and districts, 30 centers in rural units, and 34 centers in the New Urban Communities Authority to improve the level of services provided to citizens. Moreover, development efforts have contributed to reducing the time for service delivery to citizens by 60% and decreasing crowding rates at fixed technology centers by supporting governorates with 37 mobile technology center vehicles, which had a positive impact on increasing citizen satisfaction. _*"Khadamat Masr" Center Project*_ The report highlighted the "Khadamat Masr" project, which aims to enhance financial and digital inclusion, reduce the time and effort required to obtain government services, and provide a package of government services from a single location. Fixed "Khadamat Masr" branches have been opened in Sharm El Sheikh, Alexandria, Aswan, and Mokattam in Cairo, with a number of other branches in other governorates nearing completion for opening. According to the report, new services have been added, bringing the total number of government services provided in "Khadamat Masr" centers to around 156 by the end of the fourth quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. It is expected that these services will reach about 200 in the next fiscal year, ranging from real estate registration and notarization services, civil affairs, the Egyptian Public Prosecution, social solidarity services, the General Department for Passports, Immigration and Nationality, the General Department of Traffic, social insurance, and electronic payment, among other services. The report revealed that the number of transactions citizens have completed at "Khadamat Masr" centers reached over 300,000 by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024-2025, with an average service time of 30 minutes. The goal is to reduce this average service time to about 20 minutes. The report mentioned that the project for integrating the spatial information infrastructure to develop the Egyptian planning system is a comprehensive national project aimed at improving the efficiency of developmental investment decisions, increasing the efficiency of government spending, optimizing resource utilization, and directing state investments in an efficient and effective manner. This is achieved by using the latest technologies and advanced satellite and aerial imaging to produce unified base maps for the state and all spatial reports. _*Mobile Technology Service Centers*_ The report reviewed the progress of the Mobile Technology Centers project, which aims to provide government services to citizens in a civilized and dignified manner, reduce crowding at government service offices, and improve the business environment. This is achieved by providing digitized services that ensure citizen satisfaction. It was noted that 276 mobile technology centers were delivered by the end of last March, out of a total target of 326 centers, comprising 198 centers for government agencies and 78 mobile centers as part of the "Khadamat Masr" project, in cooperation between the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation and various government entities. _*Health Projects Information Infrastructure Project*_ Regarding the Health Projects Information Infrastructure Project (sustainability of birth and death systems and development of the vaccination systems' information infrastructure), it aims to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the health system and improve the quality of healthcare services. This is done by developing an integrated information infrastructure that supports the accurate and efficient registration of vital statistics. The project also contributes to enhancing the state's capacity for sustainable health planning, rationalizing spending, and improving vaccination registration mechanisms. The number of health offices linked electronically is 4,666, and the operational capacity of 2,000 health offices has been increased (providing devices and equipment). All vaccination offices have also been linked and are operating on the electronic system. The number of electronically linked vaccination offices has reached 5,434, and the number of vaccination offices supported with devices as part of the 2024/2025 plan has reached 2,000. _*Government Performance Improvement Project*_ The report also covered the project to improve government performance in cooperation with the Administrative Prosecution. This project aims to improve the performance of public facilities nationwide and enhance the quality of life for Egyptian citizens by evaluating and measuring government performance. It also supports decision-makers with accurate data that contributes to improving the performance of public employees and government entities. The project aims to link 273 administrative prosecution offices to the complaints system, and by the end of June 2025, 22,946 complaints had been registered through the system. _*Electronic Voting Project*_ The report outlined the electronic voting project, which aims to establish the first electronic voting system in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in cooperation with the Administrative Prosecution Authority, and to create an integrated digital platform for managing and operating the electoral system electronically. _*Supporting the Operational Capacity of Real Estate Registry Offices*_ The report referred to the project to support the operational capacity of the Real Estate and Notarization Authority's offices. This project contributes to the rapid entry of data for registration and publicity requests for properties in accordance with Law No. 9 of 2022, and the quick completion of property registration procedures for citizens. This leads to an increase in the state's public treasury revenues due to the rise in accepted registration requests and collected fees. The operational capacity of 28 offices, 293 sub-offices, and one main office of the Real Estate and Notarization Authority has been improved. _*Supporting the Operational Capacity of Public Prosecution Offices*_ Regarding the project to support the operational capacity of Public Prosecution offices, it aims to facilitate litigation procedures and ensure that stakeholders can obtain their rights without hardship, within a framework of constitutional and procedural legitimacy. This is achieved by automating 640 offices over four years from the start of the project and converting 50 million documents into digital documents that are easy to access and store. The number of offices targeted for the first year, 2024-2025, is 123 public prosecution offices (19% of the total number of offices), and the number of digitally converted documents has reached 2,375,000. Hayes also pointed to sluggish credit growth in major economies stunting nominal gross domestic product growth in warning that Bitcoin and Ether could fall further toward the $100,000 and $3,000 levels.
