2025 Gold Cup odds: Mexico slight favorites to win tournament
Arguably the biggest storyline comes from the United States, as the summer tournament was supposed to serve as an opportunity for the team to gel with new manager Mauricio Pochettino— but the roster is not what most expected.
Christian Pulisic, Jedi Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Sergino Dest are among a group of regular stars not participating in this summer's tournament for various reasons. Instead, the USMNT looks more like a greener, motley crew of sorts, mixing guys who have World Cup and European experience with those that play in MLS and have never before been to a major tournament with the senior squad.
The U.S. has won seven Gold Cup titles, most recently in 2021. Mexico, a team that's finding its competitive footing and won the Nations League Finals this spring, claimed the championship in 2023. The only time the tournament was won by a country other than the U.S. or Mexico was in 2000, with Canada taking home the title that year. Mexico is currently the slight favorite to win it all at +170, with the USMNT not far behind at +200.

The U.S. struggled in the two warm-up matches leading up to the tournament, losing 2-1 to Turkey on June 7 and 4-0 to Switzerland on June 10. Mexico on the other hand, defeated Turkey 1-0 and lost 4-2 to the Swiss.
Canada is third on the oddsboard at +550, and will be a team to watch after finishing in fourth place at the 2024 Copa América tournament. While they'll be without star player Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) as he's recovering from injury, they have other notable veterans like Jonathan David (Lille) and Stephen Eustaquio (Porto) and Tajon Buchanan (Inter Milan/Villareal).

Messi available to return from injury for Inter Miami, Mascherano says
Lionel Messi is expected to be part of Inter Miami's matchday squad on Saturday, when the club hosts the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy at Chase Stadium. Head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters on Friday that Messi is cleared to rejoin the team after missing Miami's last two matches with a right leg injury. Advertisement 'Leo is fine. He's been training with the team since Wednesday,' Mascherano said. 'Barring anything strange today, he should make the squad for Saturday's match.' Messi injured his hamstring on August 2 in the first half of Miami's win over Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. He has since sat out of Miami's matches against Pumas, a 3-1 win for the MLS side, and a 4-1 defeat to Orlando City last Sunday in an MLS regular season game that humbled Mascherano's men. Without Messi, Miami was outplayed in Orlando. The attacking edge and competitiveness that Messi adds were glaring omissions on the day — something that Mascherano could not replace against their Florida rivals. 'This can't happen again,' the manager said after the loss. Miami currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with three games in hand following participation in the Club World Cup this summer. The chances are still there for Miami to make up ground and challenge for the conference's top seed and another Supporters' Shield. Still, managing Messi's fitness ahead of a busy final two weeks of August could determine how eager Mascherano is to go all-out in both the regular season and Leagues Cup. And after signing Messi's Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul this summer, Miami's MLS Cup aspirations were further underscored. Miami has reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, too, and awaits a date with tournament contender Tigres next Wednesday. After Miami's first win of the tournament over Atlas, Messi told Apple TV that Leagues Cup is a tournament 'that we want to win.' Orlando City, Seattle and the Galaxy joined Miami as the four MLS teams to advance from the group stage. The winner, runner up and third-place team all qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup. That competition is obviously important to Miami – it is MLS's potential gateway to the next Club World Cup – so one shouldn't expect Mascherano to take it lightly. It's also imperative for Messi, 38, to maintain his match fitness by playing in meaningful matches. Messi is currently tied with Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge for the top spot in the MLS Golden Boot race with 18 goals. Advertisement Messi was suspended by MLS for Miami's league match against FC Cincinnati on July 26 after opting out of the league's All-Star Game July 23. Upon his return against Atlas in Leagues Cup, Messi said that he needed to avoid missing games in order to compete at his highest level. Rest is one thing, but to lose his match fitness during an important stretch of games for Miami is clearly a concern for the Argentina captain. In September, the defending world champions will close out their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a home match in Buenos Aires against Venezuela, followed by an away test in Quito, Ecuador. Those two games are more than likely Messi's last qualifiers as Argentina's captain and World Cup hero. And even though Argentina has already qualified, it's conceivable that he'd like to be available to celebrate La Albiceleste's dominant campaign. The Argentina Football Federation will hope to feature Messi during the October and November FIFA international windows as well. This season was always going to be a heavier lift for Messi and Miami with the addition of the Club World Cup to an already congested schedule. Lessons will have certainly been learned after Miami ran out of gas in the first round of the MLS playoffs last season, crashing out against Atlanta United in one of the biggest playoff upsets in league history. The EPL is home to some of the biggest and brightest stars in world soccer, many of whom will star for their countries in next summer's 48-team tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. EUROPE'S BEST TEAMS: WHERE BARCELONA, PSG, LIVERPOOL RANK AMONG TOP 20 Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy last season after an outstanding 84-point season and added more attacking talent this season with big-money transfers for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. But is this the year Arsenal finally lift the trophy? Can Manchester City reclaim their throne? The Magpies eked into the Champions League places last term only because UEFA granted England's top flight one additional spot. Newcastle fans aren't complaining though, though they will be if and when star forward Alexander Isak leaves for Liverpool on the eve of the new season. It's hard to believe that the 20-time English champions finished 15th last season, when they also lost the Europa League final to Premier League rivals Tottenham. But the Red Devils added forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško this window, and they should fare better in Ruben Amorim's first full season at the Old Trafford helm. AC Milan signs Young Boys defender Athekame for 2nd major Swiss addition this month
MILAN (AP) — AC Milan signed defender Zachary Athekame on Friday, adding another Swiss player this month as the seven-time European champion tries to return to the Champions League. Milan said the 20-year-old Athekame signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee for the former Young Boys right-back is reportedly 10 million euros ($11.7 million). The Switzerland Under-21 international arrives in Milan days after former Lucerne playmaker Ardon Jashari joined from Club Brugge for a reported 36 million euros ($42 million). Milan placed eighth in Serie A last season and failed to qualify for any European competition. Athekame played in all eight of Young Boys' Champions League games last season. The Swiss title holder lost all eight to finish last in the 36-team standings. Milan placed 13th then was eliminated in the knockout playoffs by Feyenoord. Athekame was released by his hometown club Servette as a teenager and played in the Swiss second-tier division just 15 months ago with Neuchatel Xamax.
