Karnataka news: Bike-borne duo kills 1, injures another with sword in Mangaluru; prohibitory orders issued—details here
A man was killed while another was seriously wounded after two youths attacked them with a sword in Irakodi area of Bantwal taluk in Karnataka's Mangaluru district on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Rahim.
The violent incident has sparked communal tensions in the region, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders from Tuesday evening to May 30.
According to Superintendent of Police, N Yathish, the incident took place at Kuriyala when Abdul Rahim was unloading sand at a site along with his helper, when two youths arrived on a motorcycle with sharp weapons and attacked the duo. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, where Rahim was declared dead on arrival.
The motive behind the attack is not clear yet.
The police visited the crime scene and launched a probe to identify and apprehend the attackers, who fled the scene immediately after the assault.
Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who is the district in-charge Minister of Dakshina Kannada, said the killing of a person named Rahim near Kolathamajalu in Mangaluru is "condemnable".
'I have already spoken to Home Minister Shri @DrParameshwara, @DgpKarnataka and Law and Order ADGP in this regard,' Rao said.
Suspecting that the incident was part of a sinister design to disrupt peace in Dakshina Kannada district, the minister said: 'I have given strict instructions to the district administration to maintain law and order in the district. I appeal to the people not to listen to any rumours.'
The authorities are working to ensure swift action and maintain order in the area.
The attack comes close on the heels of Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty's murder on May 1 in Mangaluru, the district headquarters of Dakshina Kannada.
A total of 11people were arrested in connection with the Shetty murder.
Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered by a group on May 1 within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru City.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested three cyber fraudsters who allegedly posed as Crime Branch officials and extorted Rs 14 lakh from an individual, who was placed under 'digital arrest', and blackmailed with his nude photos. The three accused — Vasim, 30, and Javed, 48, and Khalid — were arrested from their residences in Rajasthan's Mewar region, the Delhi Police said. The police said that the racket came to light when the complainant approached the Delhi Police, claiming that he had been duped by fraudsters who recorded his nudes on a WhatsApp call. 'During the call, an obscene video of a girl started playing, and she manipulated the complainant into getting nude, subsequently recording his video. The complainant, later, received three obscene videos of himself, which had been recorded by the fraudster,' Vichitra Veer, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West, said. The victim told the police that a man claiming to be from the Crime Branch then contacted him over WhatsApp and told him that the girl he had talked to was a minor and that his phone was tracked by the police. To get away with the 'crime', the caller asked the complainant to pay Rs 1.5 lakh initially and then called him twice to blackmail him into giving an additional Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. The complainant gave in to the demand. 'The complainant stated that the fraudster called again and threatened that the girl had committed suicide and that the complainant would be arrested. He further demanded ₹6 lakh for 'settling' the case, which the complainant also transferred,' DCP Veer said. After losing Rs 14 lakh, the complainant approached the cyber police station. Investigators traced the accounts to which the money was transferred, leading them to Mewat, a known cybercrime hub. Following this, the police raided the houses of Vasim and Javed in the Deeg district of Rajasthan and arrested them. During interrogation, Vasim revealed that Khalid had recorded the nude videos and impersonated a Crime Branch officer. 'A raid was conducted at Khalid's residence, and he was apprehended too,' DCP Veer said. All three men were formally arrested on Wednesday after questioning. A police officer noted that typically, users of mule accounts are unaware of the main suspects in digital arrest schemes; they are usually tasked with siphoning off money from the account and transferring it to another. 'However, in this case, the suspects knew each other as they were all working together. This facilitated to nab the main accused swiftly,' the officer said.

Nearly 15,500 smugglers held in Punjab anti-drug drive
In three months of launching its anti-drug drive 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', the Punjab Police have arrested 15,495 drug smugglers and registered 9,087 FIRs, according to an official. A roadmap has been prepared to eliminate drugs from Punjab. To achieve this, a two-pronged strategy is being adopted to further dismantle the narcotics network by segregating big drug suppliers and peddlers from the drug users, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said. Along with this, a balanced approach of zero tolerance has been adopted by taking stringent legal actions against traffickers and motivating users to undergo de-addiction treatment, he said. 'Our aim is to choke the supply chain by isolating and punishing the actual drug dealers while offering a compassionate path to recovery for drug users,' said Yadav. Sharing the outcome of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' drive, the DGP said the police have registered 9,087 FIRs and arrested 15,495 drug smugglers since March 1.
