Police educate students on human trafficking threats

Time of India31-07-2025
Prayagraj: Students at Fateh Bahadur Singh Inter College were apprised about the grave issue of human trafficking and its changing forms, including the growing threat of online exploitation of children.
The programme was jointly organised by Pragati Gramodyog & Social Welfare Institute and the Prayagraj Police's Anti-Human Trafficking Unit to mark the World Anti-Human Trafficking Week.
It was part of a broader effort to educate young people and communities to recognise, resist, and report human trafficking, ensuring safer futures for vulnerable children in rural areas.
Head of the Prayagraj Police's anti-human trafficking unit, sub-inspector Shiv Kumar Goyal said luring boys and girls from villages to big cities with false promises and exploiting them constitutes human trafficking.
"Girls and their parents must be aware of these tactics, as traffickers often deceive girls by tempting them with the promise of a better life, only to subject them to exploitation," he said.
During the event, Shivani Shukla of class 11 led the students in taking a pledge to help prevent human trafficking and support its victims. The session included detailed discussions on various aspects of trafficking and how it increasingly uses digital platforms to trap children.

District representative of Pragati Gramodyog Institute Sanjay Jaiswal explained that their organisation was actively strengthening child welfare and protection committees at the village and block levels. The institute is also running campaigns to prevent child marriage and child labour, both closely linked to human trafficking.
The programme saw participation from around 130 students, along with teachers, the principal, and members of Pragati Gramodyog, including Hemant Singh Negi, Roshan Lal, and Ravi Shankar.

AI helps trace, nab truck driver involved in hit-and-run from UP

Nagpur: The Nagpur rural police used AI (artificial intelligence) through their indigenous tool, MARVEL, to apprehend a truck driver responsible for a hit-and-run accident on Nagpur-Jabalpur highway. The driver was tracked 700km away on Gwalior-Kanpur highway and was apprehended in less than a week on Saturday. On August 16, Deolapar police arrested Satyapal Rajendra, 28, from Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, at his residence and seized the vehicle involved in the incident. The hit-and-run case gained widespread attention after a man's video of returning home on a bike with his wife's body tied to the seat went viral on social media. SP Nagpur (rural), Harssh A Poddar, said that the AI-driven technology calculated the truck's average speed as captured by a CCTV if it passed unhindered. "AI red flags if any anomaly is found in the calculated average speed and the actual one. We fed information into the system about a red truck which threw up results about five such vehicles. Subsequent investigations led the police to zero in on the accused who has now been apprehended," said Poddar, adding the vehicle plied between the Chandrapur-Kanpur-Delhi route. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Gyarsi Yadav, 30, was killed and her husband, Amit, 35, injured after a truck with UP registration number hit their two-wheeler near Morphata Dargah under Deolapar police station limits on August 10. 2010 D'sthala murder case closed in a haste, claims activist

Mangaluru: Activist Jayanth T has raised fresh questions over the handling of an alleged 2010 murder case in Dharmasthala, claiming that the authorities had hurried through the burial without a proper probe. He alleged on Saturday a woman, aged around 40, was reportedly murdered on Apil 6, 2010, and the body was hurriedly buried through the local gram panchayat despite it being a murder case. Meanwhile, SIT continued with its investigation into the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case on Saturday. The team reportedly questioned the complainant-witness. Regarding the alleged 2010 murder case, citing records obtained under the RTI Act, including bills related to the burial, Jayanth questioned why the case was closed in haste, with the authorities making no effort to get to the bottom of the truth. He said he would soon be submitting a detailed complaint based on RTI documents sought from 1995 to 2024 and demanded action against those who had allegedly tampered with evidence. "We are not against any temple or individual, but action needs to be taken against those responsible for the lapses," he added. Jayanth added that on Aug 4, he visited the office of the special investigation team (SIT) to file a complaint about a minor girl who was allegedly buried, and sought action against those involved in the crime, including a cop. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He claimed he had provided information on and the names of persons with knowledge about the incident. The SIT has summoned all of them for questioning and inspected the site. Jayanth was also taken for a spot mahazar. According to the SIT, exhumation could be necessary. "I told them that if my complaint is found to be false, they can close the case immediately or take action against me," Jayanth further said. He further alleged that a former panchayat president attempted to assault a witness, and he had filed a police complaint in this regard. "People are afraid to come forward," he added.
