How the Jesuit experience shaped Ger Brennan, the new Dublin football manager

The 423 days ago
THE QUOTE FROM St Ignatius Loyola, a Basque soldier turned priest who formed the Jesuits, holds that, 'Give me the boy until he is seven, and I will show you the man.'
It is from the Jesuit approach to education, and again, we are quoting here; 'concentrated on the holistic development of the individual, encompassing intellectual, spiritual and moral growth,' that the new Dublin senior football manager Ger Brennan is rooted.
In a Podcast back in 2021 for Belvedere's Faith and Services Programmes, he told of how he prays the Jesuit Examen (examination of the conscience) every day. How he listens to the school song, 'Only in God,' and related how he tries to invoke compassion in his dealings with young students in UCD, where he is the Gaelic Games development officer.
Appointed on a three-year arrangement as Dessie Farrell's successor, he is now once of the most closely scrutinised figures in Irish sport.
He's not alone in professing his religious beliefs in the GAA. Nonetheless it makes him unusual.
On 20 January 2014, just a few months after he won the All-Ireland title, he went along to St Dominic's in Cabra to launch Catholic Schools Week.
He told students there, 'I am someone who believes strongly in Jesus Christ, I believe in God incarnate and I believe that Jesus is the example, the X-Factor, for people to follow their lives by.
'It's something I've been fortunate enough to have accepted and believed in from a very young age starting at home and it's something which I drift from time to time . . . but . . . once you experience the love of Christ in your life, be it through a personal, deep or more public experience there's no getting away from him.
'For me, faith, love of God is always an invitation, a freedom of choice and it's something we can choose to accept or something we can choose to ignore. I think there are many challenges in the world which support us in ignoring that love of God in our lives but I think if we keep continuing to focus on the goodness within young people and believe within yourself I think everything will work out fine.'
At the time, he was in St Kevin's, teaching Religion, Irish and History. He was also the School Chaplain.
The launch of Catholic Week wasn't afraid to ask itself some fundamental questions. Brennan told those gathered that the holistic approach to education should include the 'invisible reality' which he summed up as 'my soul, my spirit, my faith in Jesus Christ.'
For the modern intercounty footballer and now manager, it all seems a little… unlikely. But so much of Brennan is unlikely.

He grew up in Dorset Street and his pathway to the fee-paying Belvedere College was through a Social Diversity Programme that took in students on scholarships.
While attending Belvedere, he naturally fell into playing a little rugby and was a couple of years ahead of Cian Healy.
Absolutely none of this is building up to some corny rags to riches narrative by the way. The Brennans were high achievers in their own right.

Their sporting pedigree can be traced to Ger's uncle Fran who played soccer for various teams including Drumcondra, but mainly Dundalk from 1966 to 1973. He won an international cap in a friendly against Belgium in 1965 in Dalymount Park.
Another uncle, Tom Brennan was featured in an Irish Press report from February 1975.
He was an early prominent member of the Liffey Valley Club and that day he took first place in the National Senior cross-country championship in Belfield, running seven and a half miles of a twisting, challenging route in 36 minutes and 59 seconds.
He beat the course record by 29 seconds and among those left in his wake included the late Jerry Kiernan, Danny McDaid and Tom O'Riordan.
Ger Brennan grew up playing Gaelic football with St Vincent's, but he wasn't what you might call your typical Vincent's man from Marino, in coming from the north inner-city.
By the time he played championship for Dublin, he became just the third man from the north inner city to represent the county in the previous 60 years. The others were Anton O'Toole and Paddy Cullen.
In an area with a population of around 120,000, you can see again how rare it is.
On the pitch, he was there from the start of the Pat Gilroy era as they transformed themselves and Gaelic football.
He made some critical interventions. In the 2011 All-Ireland final, he caught Kerry's Declan O'Sullivan with the kind of hit that either gets a red card or turns a tide. O'Sullivan subsequently lost possession for two plays in which Dublin grabbed a goal and a point.

He kicked two points against Mayo that defied belief
After retiring in October 2014, he continued to play on for St Vincent's and became a high-profile supporter for a 'No' vote in the 2015 Marriage Equality referendum.
Writing in The Irish Independent at the time, he said, 'I know I'll be targeted for it and labelled for it. It would have been easier to keep my mouth shut and not rock the boat. But I'm sick of the accusations being flung around that if you vote 'No' you are homophobic. I know I'm not homophobic; my gay friends and family can attest to that. I am voting 'No' because I don't want our Constitution to deny that it is a good thing for a child to have a mother and a father.
'The Universal Declaration on Human Rights proclaims that everybody is equal in dignity and it holds that marriage is a male-female union. I don't think the Declaration of Human Rights is homophobic. I'm voting 'No'.'
Along the way, he got his first break coaching at county level under Niall Carew at Carlow in 2020.
His involvement with UCD brought him further into that world but all the same, it was a small surprise when he took over Louth following Mickey Harte's shock departure in 2023.
Bringing the Wee County to their first Leinster title in 68 years represented a modern-day Gaelic football miracle. He could do anything he wanted after that, but Dessie Farrell stepping down in Dublin made him the obvious move.
A decade ago, you could happily have made the argument for hours on end that the easiest job in Gaelic football was that of the Dublin manager; plenty of players, great facilities, nobody living too far from home, permanent residents of Croke Park, and so on.
Those arguments have dried up. Different rules will apply for Brennan. Old Dublin town hums with the possibilities. Who is coming back? Where are they at? What levels can they reach?
What happens next will be fascinating. Comes with the gig.

Parents of US nurse allegedly murdered by Irishman attend special tribute to her

Mackenzie Michalski, a 31-year-old American nurse, went missing on November 4 from a nightclub in central Budapest The parents of Mackenzie Michalski who was murdered while traveling in Budapest last November, have attended a special soccer match in her honour. The local Portland Thorns FC paid tribute to the nurse ahead of their Sunday match with Seattle Reign. According to KPTV, her parents, Bill and Jill Michalski flew in from Buffalo, New York, on derby day against Seattle. 'Mackenzie loved Portland and she loved Portland soccer,' Bill Michalski said. Their 31-year-old daughter, who was a neurosurgery nurse practitioner at Providence St Vincent, was a major soccer fan. Jill Michalski said there were humbled and grateful for the Thorns honouring her daughter. 'She lived a humanitarian life of service, but she was also a huge adventurer, traveller, loved to live life large and even she would be completely blown away the way she is being honoured today.' Ahead of the match, Thorns assistant coach Vytas Andriuškevičius presented both parents with a custom jersey. 'It's a very sad story, but to celebrate someone's life and to remember good stories, good memories and then to cheer each other and just to have a moment together, I think it's very special,' Andriuškevičius told KPTV. 'Maybe it becomes the thing that they do yearly, and it's something that we can remind of her, and remember her and remember her stories, and keep her present with us daily.' Mackenzie Michalski lived in Portland for four years, where, Jill Michalski, said they had been 'showered with love'. 'Although this is a celebration for a day, it's still a really difficult time and everyone has gone beyond and above to make us feel comfortable and to just love on us,' she said. Mackenzie Michalski with her parents 'She was always involved in the community, and she loved history, she loved the culture of Portland because it's very unique, coming from Buffalo, New York,' Bill Michalski said. 'She embraced it and she really loved it.' Mackenzie Michalski News in 90 Seconds - August 13th Mackenzie Michalski, a 31-year-old American nurse, went missing on November 4 from a nightclub in central Budapest. Her body was later discovered in a suitcase in a wooded area 140km outside the capital. A 37-year-old Irish man was arrested in connection with her murder after the discovery of her remains. The man, who works in marketing and has not been named, has appealed his ongoing detention. Last April his lawyer, Dr Gyorgy Magyar, said: 'My law firm is defending an Irish citizen who is suspected of the crime of murder committed against a US citizen. 'In relation to the case, I can inform you that the investigation conducted by the police is still ongoing, which is to obtain further expert opinions and evaluate the available evidence. Mackenzie Michalski was killed last November 'The court has extended the detention of our client for two months, against which our office has filed an appeal. The next court decision regarding the extension of the detention is expected in early May.' The man's ongoing incarceration is the second extension Budapest's Metropolitan Prosecution Office has secured in relation to the Irish suspect. He was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Ms Michalski on November 7 after police reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area where the young woman was last seen. Ms Michalski, who worked as a nurse in Portland, Oregon, last made contact with friends on the night of Monday November 4 from a nightclub in central Budapest. She was reported missing the next day by her friends after she did not check out of her Airbnb accommodation in the Hungarian capital. According to a statement released by Budapest police, Ms Michalski and the male suspect met at a nightclub in central Budapest on the night of her disappearance before going to another nightclub and later to the man's rented apartment in the city. The same police statement noted that the Irish man maintained that Ms Michalski's death was accidental. According to the police, following Ms Michalski's death, the suspect cleaned his apartment and drove to Lake Balaton, two hours west of Budapest, with Ms Michalski's body placed in the suitcase, before hiding her body in a wooded area. After his arrest, the suspect travelled with police to Lake Balaton to reveal the location of Ms Michalski's body. Mr Magyar previously told a Hungarian media outlet that Ms Michalski's death was 'an accidental act without intention'. Under Hungarian law, a suspect is formally charged after the conclusion of an investigation. In cases of suspected murder or manslaughter, an investigation period can take a number of months, and, in some cases, more than a year to conclude. In an interview with this newspaper earlier this year, Ms Michalski's father said he did not believe his daughter's death was accidental. 'The main thing for us now is to be patient and allow the police to continue to carry out their investigation,' Bill Michalski said. 'Everyone wants to know the details. We have faith in the police investigation, and they are keeping us updated.' Ms Michalski's mother, Jill, added: 'Our daughter was kind, compassionate, independent and adventurous. And she loved to laugh. People ask us how we are doing… all we can say is we are doing as well as we can be.'

I'm a teacher by profession, continuing with a Masters in the University of Limerick this coming September, which I'm extremely excited about. Teaching has taught me the true meaning of the saying "choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life". Sport has always been a huge part of my life. I play both camogie and football with my local clubs. I love the community spirit, laughter, determination, and 'craic' that comes with being part of both teams. Most of these girls are the equivalent to family and I would be truly lost without them. I come from a close and loving family who have always supported my decisions, encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and guided me over every hurdle I've faced. A favourite trip and recent highlight of mine was travelling through Asia during the Summer of 2024. I'm beyond excited & grateful for what the future holds throughout my Rose journey. I'm Aidan, I'm 27 and I moved to Ottawa six years ago to complete my Master's in International Affairs, specializing in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy. I've since been accepted into the Canadian Foreign Service as a Diplomat and currently work in Indigenous Services. Outside of work, I run a freelance marketing business, captain my volleyball teams, and can usually be found playing pickup footy, painting, reading, cooking for friends, or heading to Pilates. My dad, who was born in Ireland and passed just before Christmas, always said my love for Ireland was 'in my blood.' It's in my love of sea swims, hikes in the Mournes, how my heart swells showing loved ones Coumeenoole Beach, the indescribable sense of feeling at home there and how a cup of tea with an ungodly amount of honey makes everything better. Honouring that love as the Ottawa Rose means everything. Hi! I'm Shannon Emery, 26, born and raised in the Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania where I work as a high school Special Education teacher. I recently completed my Master's in Educational Leadership from Immaculata University and will begin my doctoral program this summer. When I'm not teaching or studying, I love spending time with family, friends, and my dogs, Clover and Jameson. My Irish roots trace back to Donegal, Meath, Kildare, Dublin, and Cork, with my strongest ties in Kerry. Inspired by my great-grandmother Elizabeth's journey from Kerry to America in 1922. I'm proud to represent that legacy as a Rose in the Rose of Tralee Festival. Queensland – Siobhan Edwards Hello!
