15 Auburn Tigers named to Shrine Bowl 1000 watchlist
A lot of hope and expectations are being placed on Jackson Arnold this season as a transfer from Oklahoma. The people at the Shrine Bowl like the potential of Arnold as he was named to the watchlist. Joining him on the offensive side of the ball is another transfer with Eric Singleton who arrives at Auburn from Georgia Tech. Singleton has been featured high on many mock drafts this off-season.
Something that should excite Auburn fans is the number of offensive linemen named to the watchlist. Five players from the offensive front made the list. Center Connor Lew made the list to no surprise. Also, tackles Xavier Chaplin and Izavion Miller plus guards Mason Murphy and Dillon Wade. The offensive line has been a group of concern over the years, but this group could change that narrative.
The defensive side of the ball has eight players listed in the Shrine Bowl 1000 watchlist. Three EDGE rushers were mentioned led by possibly Auburn's top prospect Keldric Faulk. Big things are expected for Faulk this season. Keyron Crawford and Sam Houston State transfer Chris Murray join Faulk. The Auburn secondary is represented by Kayin Lee, Rayshawn Pleasant, and Raion Strader. The lone Tigers linebacker was Maryland transfer Caleb Wheatland.

Lunden Esterline, Asterisk Talley win Junior PGA titles; Charlie Woods backs up to T-9
While the U.S. Ryder Cup picture is still unclear, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team is nearly set. Lunden Esterline, a 2027 Auburn commit from Andover, Kansas, won the Junior PGA Championship by six shots on Friday afternoon and, in turn, earned an automatic Junior Ryder Cup berth. Esterline, who fired a second-round 62 to take control, closed in even-par 71 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Ackerman-Allen Course to finish the 72-hole tournament at 19 under. 'I'm still trying to comprehend the whole thing, but it feels amazing,' Esterline said. 'It means a ton. It gives me a lot of confidence going into bigger tournaments after this that I can do it, and I proved to myself this week that I'm just as good as anybody else out there.' Behind Esterline were 2026 Vanderbilt commit Tyler Mawhinney and 2027 recruit Guiseppe Puebla in a share of second. Mawhinney double-bogeyed the par-3 17th hole before capping his closing 69 with birdie. Puebla fired the round of the day by three shots, a 64. Because Mawhinney, who earlier this year teamed with Will Hartman to win the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, qualified for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team via points (along with top-ranked Miles Russell), Puebla received the automatic berth afforded to the runner-up. Esterline, Puebla, Mawhinney and Russell will be joined by U.S. Junior Amateur winner Hamilton Coleman and a captain's pick to be named Tuesday in competing in the two-day Junior Ryder Cup, which is scheduled for Sept. 23-25 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black (singles only). Ayden Fynaut of Fresno, California, nearly had a solo second before doubling the par-4 18th hole. He tied for fourth at 12 under with China's Zenghao Hou, who played his final five holes in 4 over. As for Charlie Woods, he began Friday in the final threesome alongside Esterline, but after back-to-back 66s, he shot 74 to slip to 9 under and T-9. He was 12 under for the tournament until going bogey-double at Nos. 14 and 15. Woods likely will not receive the captain's pick for the Junior Ryder Cup. That pick should be extended to 2026 Vanderbilt commit Luke Colton, who is the second highest-ranked junior in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at No. 24, behind only Russell (16th) and ahead of Tyler Watts (40th), who is not eligible for the pick because he skipped the Junior PGA to play this week's Western Amateur. Colton, fresh off making the semifinals at the U.S. Junior, declined to the play the Western in favor of chasing a Junior Ryder Cup spot. Asterisk Talley took the girls division, birdieing two of her last three holes to help offset three bogeys in her last five. Talley earned the one-shot win over Zoe Cusack, who closed her final round bogey-double.

Auburn's Alex McPherson named to Lou Groza Award watch list
Alex McPherson is receiving national attention ahead of his "comeback" season. Preseason award watch season is upon us, and one Auburn Tiger is on the radar. Alex McPherson is set to return to the field full-time after an illness sidelined him for most of the 2024 season. He has caught the attention of the Palm Beach Sports Commission as he is one of 30 kickers included on the Lou Groza Award watch list that was released Friday afternoon. McPherson was 49-of-49 on extra points and was 19-of-20 on field goals with a long of 53 yards as a freshman and sophomore during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In one game last season, he connected on all three extra point attempts while going 1-for-2 on field goals in Auburn's win at Kentucky in October. He has worked to regain strength and is poised to make a strong comeback in 2025. 'It gives me some confidence that my body can hold up, that I can trust it and not have to worry about it every step of the way like I had to last year,' McPherson said in an interview with Jeff Shearer of 'I think this is definitely one of the strongest groups in the country. We have three really strong kickers, we've got three strong punters. This group is definitely special and it's going to be something to look out for this year.' USC's Caden Chittenden, Georgia's Payton Woodring, and UAB's Jonah Delange join McPherson on the Groza watch list this season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8. Pair of Sooners specialists named to annual award watch lists
The Oklahoma Sooners spent time in the transfer portal this offseason working to remake their special teams units after Zach Schmit and Luke Elzinga ran out of eligibility after last season. The Sooners brought in Tate Sandell from UTEP and Jacob Ulrich from Kennesaw State to take over as the place kicker and punter. Sandell was named to the Lou Groza Award watch list, given to the nation's best kicker, on Friday. Ulrich was named to the Ray Guy Award watch list, which goes to the best punter in college football. Sandell arrived in the spring portal after a strong season with the Miners, converting 19 of 23 field goals, including 17 of 18 within 49 yards, and was perfect within 40 yards. Ulrich averaged 45.6 yards per punt and was fifth in the nation in punts downed inside the 20. The Oklahoma Sooners expect to be one of the better teams in the nation in 2025, and if they are, they'll need Sandell and Ulrich to come through when called upon.
