Israel to deport six activists detained on Gaza-bound aid flotilla

Al Arabiya12-06-2025
An Israeli NGO representing activists detained aboard a boat attempting to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza said Thursday that six were en route to the airport for deportation.
'After more than 72 hours in Israeli custody following the unlawful interception of the Madleen Freedom Flotilla in international waters ... six volunteers are now being transferred to Ben Gurion Airport for deportation,' the Adalah rights group said in a statement.
It added that the six – two French citizens and nationals of Brazil, Germany, the Netherlands and Turkey – were expected to be deported later Thursday or early Friday.
Rima Hassan, a member of European Parliament for the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party who is of Palestinian descent, is among the group to be imminently expelled.
Twelve people were on board the Madleen sailing boat when it was intercepted by Israeli forces in the eastern Mediterranean about 185 kilometers (115 miles) west of Gaza on Monday.
Four, including two French citizens and Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg, agreed to be deported immediately.
Another two French nationals remain in Israeli custody awaiting deportation on Friday, Adalah said.
'While in custody, volunteers were subjected to mistreatment, punitive measures and aggressive treatment, and two volunteers were held for some period of time in solitary confinement,' it added.
All 12 of the activists on board the Madleen have been banned from Israel for 100 years.
Israel has faced mounting pressure to allow more aid into Gaza, where the United Nations has warned the whole population of more than two million is at risk of famine.

US congresswoman joins effort to limit offensive weapons to Israel

CHICAGO: Democratic Congresswoman Robin Kelly on Thursday said she supports 'Block the Bombs' legislation that would prevent the 'unchecked transfer' of offensive weapons to Israel. In a statement to Arab News, Kelly said she will continue to support 'defensive' systems for Israel, but its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 'has turned a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, allowing starvation and famine to spread.' She added: 'We've reached a critical point where Congress needs to act.' The legislation was introduced in May by Democratic Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, and is backed by 21 other members of Congress. As the Gaza conflict continues and the loss of civilian life grows, more mainstream members have joined in pushing for the law's adoption. 'As Senator, I will support essential security aid to Israel. But in this moment, we cannot allow the transfer of the deadliest offensive weapons without taking definitive action to prevent the loss of civilian life,' Kelly said, referencing her candidacy for the US Senate next year.

Iran Holds First Military Drills after War with Israel

Iran on Thursday launched its first military drills since the 12-day war with Israel, which erupted in June 2025, reported the Associated Press (AP) citing Iranian state media. The drills, dubbed 'Sustainable Power 1404,' comes as Iranian leadership attempts to project power after Israel bombed Iran's air defense systems, nuclear facilities and other key sites. The exercise involved Iran's Navy, which did not take part in the Iran-Israel conflict, firing missiles and drones at open water targets in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean. 'These drills take place around a month after the Iran-Russia drill under the name Casarex 2025 which took place in Iran's northern waters (Caspian Sea). The Sustainable Power drills…are in Iran's southern waters,' Iranian state TV said. Since the end of the war with Israel, Iran has repeatedly stated that it is prepared to counter any future attacks. On Wednesday, the Iranian Defense Minister, Aziz Nasirzadeh, said that Tehran has equipped its troops with new missiles to respond to any attacks. 'In response to any potential enemy adventurism, our forces are prepared to use these new missiles effectively,' he said, as quoted by the state-run IRNA news agency. Similarly, the Defense Ministry threatened a harsh response to any potential Israeli attacks. 'Any new adventure by the enemy will be faced with a strong slap,' it said in a statement on Thursday, according to Reuters. Iran has suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) amid rising tensions over its uranium enrichment levels. Tehran has also suspended negotiations with Washington over its nuclear program after Israel's war on the country, which the US briefly joined by striking three key nuclear sites. Netanyahu approves Gaza City attack, orders hostage negotiations

JERUSALEM: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said he had ordered the beginning of immediate negotiations to release the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza. The announcement comes a day after the defense ministry approved a plan authorizing the call-up of roughly 60,000 reservists to help capture Hamas's last major strongholds in Gaza City. 'I have come to approve the IDF's (military's) plans to take control of Gaza City and defeat Hamas,' the prime minister said in a video statement during a visit with the Gaza division. 'At the same time, I have instructed to immediately begin negotiations for the release of all our hostages and the end of the war under conditions acceptable to Israel.' Meditators have been waiting for days for an official Israeli response to their latest ceasefire proposal, after Hamas accepted the plan earlier this week. 'I greatly appreciate the commitment of the reserve soldiers, and of course the regular army, for this vital mission,' said Netanyahu. 'These two matters — defeating Hamas and releasing all our hostages — go hand in hand.' Israel and Hamas have held indirect negotiations throughout the nearly two-year conflict, resulting in two short ceasefires during which Israeli hostages were freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas's October 2023 attack on southern Israel that triggered the war, 49 are still in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead.
