Delhi LG lays foundation stone for new clock tower
Lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena on Monday laid the foundation stone of the new clock tower being built at the junction of Mandir Marg and Shankar Road near Talkatora stadium. 'I am hopeful that this upcoming clock tower would also become a new landmark in the national capital as it is strategically positioned at the intersection that serves as the gateway to the NDMC area and attract many visitors,' LG Saxena said. Being built by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) at an estimated cost of ₹1.8 crore and a timeline of six months, the tower will be 27 feet tall and feature a mix of Mughal, colonial, and Hindu architecture. Chief minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet minister Parvesh Verma, New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj, NDMC chairman Keshave Chandra, and other government officials were also present at the event on Monday. The clock tower will feature a two-meter diameter clock and an octagonal design made of Reinforced Cement Concrete, adorned with a layer of clay bricks and other ornamental features. The surrounding area will have granite flooring, steel railings, and marble decorations.

LG unveils Maa Yamuna Prathima at Nigambodh Ghat after restoration of Yamuna floodplains
New Delhi: Following extensive restoration work along the Yamuna floodplains, lieutenant governor V K Saxena on Monday unveiled Maa Yamuna Prathima, a 10-foot-high statue standing on a 7-foot pedestal, at Nigambodh Ghat. The site is accessible through the DDA parking lot and connected to Vasudev Ghat through a dedicated cycle track and pedestrian walkway. It has several kiosks for visitors as well. "The installation marks a significant milestone in the ongoing rejuvenation of the Yamuna floodplains, being undertaken comprehensively and meticulously by DDA under LG's supervision and guidance. The idol offers visitors a space that strengthens the bond between nature, divinity and the community," DDA said, adding that LG had selected the site for the idol's installation during one of the many visits to the Yamuna floodplains. "The Yamuna is more than a river; it is a part of our living heritage that has shaped our culture and beliefs. This idol honours that very sacred connection between humans and nature, and reminds us to protect the river's sanctity for future generations," said Saxena. The site was earlier heavily encroached upon and filled with garbage. A sustained drive to remove squatters was undertaken and the place was cleaned comprehensively. DDA also carried out detailed landscaping of the site to improve aesthetics. The idol faces the direction of the origin of the Yamuna, flowing a few steps away, and was crafted by skilled artisans in Delhi over three months. The surrounding area has been landscaped with riverine grasses, seasonal flowers and native plant species, such as Kadamba, Ashoka, Pennisetum, palash and canna, preserving the natural character of the floodplain while creating a vibrant and tranquil environment. Last year, DDA organised the first ever Dilli Deepotsav 2024 at Vasudev Ghat, which saw widespread participation, with over 3.5 lakh earthen lamps illuminating the riverbank alongside a grand Yamuna aarti, apart from drone and laser shows. LG has also been supervising projects for the creation of biodiversity zones like Asita, Baansera and Amrit Biodiversity Park, spread over more than 1,000 acres of land.
