India's foodgrain production rises by 106 lakh tonnes in FY25, hits 1,663.91 lakh tonnes: Agri Minister Shivraj Chouhan
New Delhi [India], May 19 (ANI): India's total foodgrain production in the financial year 2024-25 increased by over 106 lakh tonnes, reaching 1,663.91 lakh tonnes, up from the previous year's output, said Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday
'In 2023-24, total foodgrain production was around 15,57.6 lakh tonne. I am glad to tell you that in 2024-25, it has become 16,63.91 lakh tonne,' Chouhan said addressing a press conference in the national capital.
'The production of Rabi was 1600.06 lakh tonne in 2023-24, now it has become 1645.27 lakh tonne,' he said.
The Union Minister said that his ministry's vision is to make India the food basket of the world.
'Our foodgrain production is increasing...we don't want to stop here. We want to fulfil the needs of our country and also help several countries across the world. Our vision is to make India the food basket of the world, one day,' the minister said.
On Sunday, while participating in the farmers' Convention Krishi Samvaad in Maharashtra, Chouhan announced 'One Nation, One Agriculture and One Team'.
The union minister said that if all the institutions are connected, targets are set, and roadmaps are made, then miracles can be made in agriculture. Chouhan said that Maharashtra, the holy land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is amazing. The farmers here are hardworking and progressive; they have infinite possibilities.
Another big announcement was made by the Union Agriculture Minister who said that a national-level lab will be set up in Pune under the Clean Plant Program. This laboratory will be set up in Pune to conduct research on the original species of plants. Union Agriculture Minister announced this while interacting with the farmers of Vidarbha in the Krishi Samvad program organised under the Vikasit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan in Kavivarya Suresh Bhat Auditorium in Nagpur.
Emphasising increasing agricultural production, Chouhan said that the Clean Plant Program is being run to ensure pure and disease-free nurseries. To increase production, farmers should understand the need for good quality seeds, soil testing and reduction in production costs.
During the event, the union Agriculture minister informed that ICAR has 113 institutes across the country, 11 of which are in Maharashtra. He announced that a meeting with heads of all ICAR institutes would be held at the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning (NBSS & LUP) in Nagpur to chart the course for agricultural development in Maharashtra. The government is committed to bridging the gap between laboratories and farmlands. (ANI)

Pune: Union minister of culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat 's visit to Shaniwarwada on Thursday raised the hope of history buffs with his announcement of using technology to enhance the visitor experience. However, it also brought disappointment to the residents living within 100m of the monument, as he did not announce any relief to allow construction activity in the vicinity. The Union minister, after his visit to the monument, assured of helping in the restoration work as per the existing rules. "We will use modern technology such as the audio-visual guide system to enhance visitor experience," he said. According to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, 1958, no construction activity is permitted within 100 meters of a heritage site. Over 1,000 properties with more than 30,000 residents reside within 100m of Shaniwarwada. They are unable to get permission to redevelop the old wadas, which are in a dilapidated state. Shekhawat was accompanied by Rajya Sabha member Medha Kulkarni and a few local residents. The minister, while speaking to mediapersons, said, "The rule is as per AMASR Act. It is not limited to only one monument but is applicable across the country. I appeal to all citizens to support the govt to protect such heritage sites by abiding by the laws." Shekhawat visited Shaniwarwada following the request of Kulkarni, who took up the issue of restoration of the monument. "It is such an important monument in the history of the Maratha empire. We have been requesting the govt to take some steps for its restoration so that the future generations know the history," Kulkarni said.

Nagaland gets run-of-the-river power project
Dimapur: Nagaland power and parliamentary affairs minister KG Kenye on Thursday virtually inaugurated the 1MW Ponglefo Small Hydro Electric Project (SHP), a run-of-the-river power project, at Salomi village under Kiphire district. This project, developed by the Nagaland power department, aims to enhance the state's power generation capacity using clean and renewable energy. It utilises the natural flow of the Likimo river, a tributary of the Tizu river, which is a perennial river in the eastern region of Nagaland. The project was funded jointly by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy, the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the state government. It consists of two generating units of 500 KW each, using horizontal Francis turbines. The power plant is supported by well-designed civil structures and an advanced electro-mechanical system, all tailored to the region's challenging terrain. Connected to the state grid, the Ponglefo SHP will play an important role in improving the power supply in the region and promoting economic development. In his inaugural speech, Kenye highlighted the abundance of natural resources in the state. He stressed that it was time to focus and concentrate on exploring and tapping the potential of the state's natural resources. Kenye said all small and mini hydro projects, including solar, bio or any kind of clean energy producing avenues, will be explored for production and generation of energy in the state. He further said doors are open for the international community to invest in the power sector, especially focusing on the sector of production and energy generation.

Census delayed to speed up delimitation: P Chidambaram
Chennai: Former union finance minister P Chidambaram said on Thursday that the Union govt had delayed the census deliberately to undertake the delimitation exercise. "A delayed Census after 2026 will trigger the provision that delimitation shall be done immediately afterwards. That is why the announcement to conduct a Census in 2027. Since the Census will be conducted in 2027, delimitation will follow," Chidambaram said in a social media post. Claiming that Tamil Nadu and several states will stand to lose seats in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said Prime Minister Modi is moving "step-by-step to achieve the RSS-BJP's mischievous goal of reducing the representation of the southern states and increasing the representation of the northern states." The BJP govt at the centre had announced that the decadal census, which was scheduled to have happened in 2021, will commence from March, 2027. Chidambaram said some political parties undermine the dangers of delimitation exercise. "Even now, not all the political parties in the to-be-affected states are alive to the dangers of delimitation on the basis of proportional representation (one person, one vote)," Chidambaram said. Appreciating chief minister M K Stalin for voicing out his opposition to the delay in census, Chidambaram said he was glad that Stalin has articulated the dangers of census in 2027 and delimitation soon after the census.
