Chennai: Former union finance minister
P Chidambaram
said on Thursday that the Union govt had delayed the census deliberately to undertake the delimitation exercise.
"A delayed Census after 2026 will trigger the provision that delimitation shall be done immediately afterwards.
That is why the announcement to conduct a Census in 2027. Since the Census will be conducted in 2027, delimitation will follow," Chidambaram said in a social media post.
Claiming that Tamil Nadu and several states will stand to lose seats in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said Prime Minister Modi is moving "step-by-step to achieve the RSS-BJP's mischievous goal of reducing the representation of the southern states and increasing the representation of the northern states."
The BJP govt at the centre had announced that the decadal census, which was scheduled to have happened in 2021, will commence from March, 2027.
Chidambaram said some political parties undermine the dangers of delimitation exercise.
"Even now, not all the political parties in the to-be-affected states are alive to the dangers of delimitation on the basis of proportional representation (one person, one vote)," Chidambaram said.
Appreciating chief minister M K Stalin for voicing out his opposition to the delay in census, Chidambaram said he was glad that Stalin has articulated the dangers of census in 2027 and delimitation soon after the census.

Democracy doesn't need drama: BJP rebuts Rahul Gandhi's 'match-fixing' claim on Maha polls

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders strongly criticized Rahul Gandhi's claims of election rigging in Maharashtra. JP Nadda dismissed Gandhi's allegations as fabricated narratives after electoral defeats. Dharmendra Pradhan accused Gandhi of discrediting institutions due to insecurity. Chandrashekhar Bawankule questioned Gandhi's silence on voter data discrepancies during Congress's rule. BJP urged Congress to introspect instead of making baseless accusations. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads The BJP on Friday hit back at Rahul Gandhi over his "match-fixing" allegation in the Maharashtra assembly polls , calling it a desperate attempt to manufacture fake narratives after repeated electoral losses In a five-point rebuttal to Gandhi's recent article, BJP president JP Nadda said: "Instead of introspecting, he cooks up bizarre conspiracies and cries rigging.""Rahul Gandhi ignores all facts, defames institutions, and shamelessly peddles lies despite being exposed time and again," Nadda said, adding that the Congress leader was doing so because "a defeat in Bihar is certain." Democracy doesn't need drama. It needs truth," he minister Dharmendra Pradhan also criticised Gandhi's remarks, calling them part of a "predictable script-lose elections, discredit institutions, fabricate conspiracies, and portray himself as a victim of an imaginary system.""But India's democracy is far stronger than the insecurities of a dynast who refuses to accept repeated electoral verdicts," Pradhan added that if Rahul Gandhi should be worried about any rigging, "it's the kind his own party mastered for decades-from the Emergency to misusing Article 356 over 90 times to dismiss opposition governments."Echoing the sentiment, BJP's Maharashtra unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule accused Gandhi of selective data use."In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, there were 7.29 crore voters. Five months later in the assembly polls, the number rose by 30 lakh. Congress was in power at both Centre and state then. Why didn't you question the Election Commission back then? Was it in alliance with Congress?" Bawankule said the Congress raised no concerns over voter figures in 2009, but is now complaining after facing defeat."Unless the Congress does serious introspection, similar results will follow," Bawankule added.
