How a government shutdown could impact military members in Northeast Florida
When the clock strikes midnight, the federal government will shut down if a spending deal isn't passed.

With the potential for a government shutdown looming, local congressional representatives are especially concerned about the potential impacts on Northeast Florida's military community.
Along with federal employees like TSA agents and postal workers, active-duty military members would also go without a paycheck in the event of a shutdown.
When you consider Northeast Florida is home to around 25,000 active-duty military members, it's not hard to imagine how all of them missing a paycheck at the same time around the holidays could have serious local impacts.
'For those that just say, shut her down, shut her down. You know what? That's easy to say if you can miss a paycheck and still pay your mortgage on time,' said Congressman John Rutherford (R-FL 5th District).
Rutherford argued that was not the case for many federal workers.
'And a lot of them are dressed in military uniforms. So, it's imperative that we find a way forward,' said Rutherford.
There are some options available in the event of a shutdown to help active-duty military members make ends meet.
Many banks and credit unions, including VyStar here in Jacksonville, offer programs in these scenarios.
In VyStar's case, that includes things like emergency relief loans and payment deferrals.
'VyStar Credit Union is prepared to assist our impacted members with a range of support programs should the federal government shutdown occur. VyStar has a history of helping members navigate financial uncertainties and remains committed to offering financial assistance to those who may be affected,' said a VyStar spokesperson in an emailed statement.
But Rutherford said he's optimistic the latest spending proposal unveiled Friday will manage to clear the finish line in time and avoid a shutdown altogether.
'President Trump is going to support this effort as well, and you know we don't have to worry about our military personnel going without pay,' said Rutherford.
If there is a shutdown, active-duty military would receive backpay once the government is reopened.

TSA proclaimed in an X post on Wednesday, June 4: "We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not." TSA Pacific spokesperson Lorie Dankers told SFGate that the rumor of Costco cards being accepted as official identification pops up every year or so. When people try to use their warehouse club cards at airports, for instance, it could lead to delays and travel headaches, she added. Food blog Chowhound claimed in the initial version of an article titled "How Your Costco Card Could Save You At The Airport," that people's Costco cards could pass through TSA because it is considered a photo ID. The article cited Reddit, where users claimed their warehouse club cards helped them through airport security when they forgot or lost their regular ID. On June 4, the day TSA debunked the rumor on social media, Chowhound issued an update to the article, saying, "A previous version of this article stated TSA is likely to accept a Costco membership card in lieu of a valid form of ID. TSA does not explicitly state you can use a Costco card as a form of identification, explaining, 'The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name and current address to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint, where you may be subject to additional screening.'" The update concludes with: "Now with the Real ID requirements, (a Costco card) is even less likely to get you through TSA quickly or successfully." If someone tried using a Costco card at an airport, they would likely be pulled from the TSA checkpoint line for further questioning about other personal information, such as their two previous home addresses, Dankers told SFGate.
