Lake County crash injures 3 after SUV strikes bus stop arm, several vehicles

BEACH PARK, Ill. — A crash in Beach Park sent three people to the hospital after an SUV struck a school bus arm before colliding with several vehicles on Tuesday morning. Lake County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the area of Sheridan Road and Michigan Boulevard on reports of a traffic crash with injuries at 8 a.m. A preliminary investigation shows a GMC Acadia, driven by a 74-year-old man, was traveling northbound on Sheridan Road, and for an unknown reason, struck the stop arm of a loading school bus. The GMC continued northbound and sideswiped a Ford Focus, driven by a 49-year-old man, causing the Ford Focus to crash into a utility pole, police say. According to police, the GMC then struck a Chevrolet Colorado, driven by a 39-year-old man, and a Ford Flex, driven by a 28-year-old woman. The children who were boarding the bus were not injured nor was the driver of the Ford Flex, police say. The driver of the GMC was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, and the drivers of the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Colorado were transported with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the driver of the GMC might have suffered a medical episode prior to the crash. The Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is still investigating. Students escape injury in Beach Park crash involving school bus

A Zion man may have suffered a medical emergency before his SUV struck four other vehicles, including a school bus, Tuesday morning in Beach Park, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said. The man, 74, was brought to a hospital in critical condition following the crash, which occurred at about 8 a.m. near the Sheridan Road and Michigan Boulevard intersection. Police said the man was headed north on Sheridan Road when his GMC SUV struck the activated stop arm of a school bus that was picking up students. The vehicle then sideswiped a Ford Focus, sending the vehicle into a utility pole. The SUV then hit two more southbound vehicles, one being driven by a Winthrop Harbor man and the other by a Fox Lake woman. There were only two students on the bus, and neither of them nor the driver was hurt. The children boarding the bus were also uninjured. The Focus driver, a 49-year-old Beach Park man, and the Fox Lake woman suffered serious injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
