AI-led technologies: replacing the human commander?

Given the return of great power politics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the world falls further into strategic flux where each state struggles for its survival and territorial integrity.
As this happens, the emerging technologies such as AI, quantum computing, integrated internet, speed in the form of hypersonic glide vehicles, remote sensing, lethal autonomous weapon systems, swarms of drones, anti-drones, etc, are preconceived to be the "game changer" for winning battles and wars quickly and decisively. The evolving AI-led world is called "the global third nuclear age."
The proponents of AI-led technologies continue to presume that yet another revolution in military affairs appears imminent. Amidst the growing body of literature on emerging technologies, particularly on AI, many leading scholars appear to be concluding rather quickly that AI integration in the land, air and sea could transform the dynamics of warfare, endanger the survivability of retaliatory capabilities, transform the doctrinal force posturing, make the strategic rivals more offensive when it comes offense-defense dilemma, create AI-led human commander and make nuclear deterrence irrelevant.
The proponents of AI argue that the lethal autonomous weapon systems in the form of "autonomous drone swarms" would be able to launch, fly, target and strike at will without having "the humans in or on the loop". In doing so, many scholars presume that AI-related weapons – while revolutionising the dynamics of warfighting strategies – would replace the traditional method of tactical and operational imperatives.
Others argue that traditional weapon systems – such as artillery, tanks, aircraft and bombers – as well as nuclear weapons could be undermined by AI-related autonomous weapons. Still others equally argue that AI-related weapon systems might affect nuclear strategies and the related decision-making.
For example, in the changing nature and character of warfare when it comes to AI-related technologies, Denise Garcia radically argued that "the development of AI and its uses for lethal purposes in war fundamentally change the nature of warfare." In the similar context, Kenneth Pyne also argues that "AI alters the nature of war by introducing non-human decision-making."
Nevertheless, the opponents of AI-related technologies are more skeptical about the dramatic impact of these technologies in terms of winning the battles rather quickly and decisively. They question if such technologies could undermine the traditional methods of warfighting strategies bolstered with tactical and operational military tactics.
They also criticise and caution the proponent of AI-related technologies that such technologies could potentially undermine the traditional warfighting military weaponry. For example, Anthony King argues that although autonomous weapons may become common, it is unclear whether such weapons will be remotely as revolutionary as many scholars routinely assume. Therefore, robot wars will not take place.
When it comes to the ambitious rationale for replacing the human commander, it is not clear whether the world's evolving complex security environment could primarily have the AI-led machine replacing the human commander in the battlefield. Also, it is not clear what consequences this could have between the nuclear rivals. We do not have any strong evidence that the leading technological powers will have the machine replacing the human commander on the battlefield. Security analysts largely preconceive that the world may have a machine commander.
The Clausewitzian world – which is based upon the essentials of empathy, correct decision, restraint and judgment – warned that in the "real world" composed by humans, chaos cannot simply be left to "a sort of algebra of action". This shows that "if all variables and outcomes could be known, and if war was a purely rational affair, there would be no need of the physical existence of armies, but only of the theoretical relations between them."
The perceived "narrow" AI may play some role in decision-making, but there is little evidence that AI technologies without the human commander particularly in the military domain could have done enough to distinguish between the different dynamics and posturing of warfare activities. For example, Hunter and Bowen argue, "That narrow AI can play games like Chess and Go effectively, or fly a simulated aircraft, does not mean that narrow AI can be relied upon to perform command duties in war."
Let's conclude with a cautious assessment: one, it is unlikely that AI-related autonomous systems could almost have limitless capacity to find, strike and destroy targets. Two, the significance of other military systems including the human military commanders could not altogether be sidelined and/or undermined. Three, AI-related weapons would favour the defence rather than the offence.
Other leading scholars also question the lethality and predominance of AI-related technologies by undermining the more traditional and classic warfighting strategies. They clearly argue from the Kitsch vision of war that "we will not have a model of an AI major-general", thereby dismissing the over-ambitious possibility of AI replacing human commanders.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slid more than 1%, while EUROSTOXX 50 futures lost 0.64% and DAX futures shed 0.63%. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.27% and Nasdaq futures lost 0.44%, extending a fall from the cash session overnight. Japan's Nikkei lost 1.7% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Tech Index shed 1.3%. In commodities, oil prices trimmed losses from the previous session, as investors awaited the next steps in talks to end Russia's war on Ukraine, with uncertainty over whether oil sanctions might be eased or tightened. Ahead of the gathering, the dollar firmed slightly, pushing the euro down 0.13% to $1.1633, while sterling fell 0.16% to $1.3470. The New Zealand dollar tumbled more than 1% after its central bank cut rates as expected and flagged further reductions in coming months as policymakers warned of domestic and global headwinds to growth. The kiwi last bought $0.5835. Elsewhere, spot gold fell 0.07% to $3,312.89 an ounce.

ISLAMABAD: An international cybersecurity company Monday strongly recommended the international travellers to avoid using 'AI' for purchasing or booking tickets/hotel reservations on websites till verification of their authenticity to avoid cyber threats. A survey of global cybersecurity company revealed that only 28 percent of the international travellers trust artificial intelligence (AI) to plan trips during summer 2025. According to Kaspersky's survey, only 28 percent of respondents trust AI to plan trips, however 96 percent of those that do are satisfied with this experience with 84 percent planning to use it in the future also. As AI continues to evolve, its presence grows accordingly, making AI-powered tools almost ubiquitous. At the height of the tourist season, Kaspersky decided to find out how often people are using AI in travel planning, and what aspects of their trip tourists are ready to entrust to artificial intelligence. The survey confirmed that AI has become a widespread tool among active Internet users, 72 percent of respondents claimed to use AI at least once. It turned out that the most popular use of AI is for research, with 76 percent of respondents confirming it was the most common use of AI. Second and the third place went to AI for work (45 percent) and studying (40 percent). Entertainment (39 percent) and experimenting with the technology (39 percent) tied for fourth place. AI in travel planning, with 28 percent of votes, is not yet among the most popular uses of AI. Regardless of the relatively small percentage of users who applied AI in travel planning, almost all of them (96 percent) were satisfied with this experience. For travellers, AI retains its most popular function – research. 70 percent of respondents, who have used AI in travel planning, trusted AI to identify events and other activities for them whether that was finding suitable excursions, popular tourist routes and souvenir shops. 66 percent used AI to select an accommodation, 60 percent made a list of restaurants with its help and 58 percent even assigned AI to search for tickets. Interestingly, families with children more actively used various AI functions in preparing for travel then childless audience suggesting AI is helping users to save time. Compared to information research, AI-powered booking was less popular across all groups. According to the survey, 45 percent of respondents booked hotels via AI services, 43 percent booked tickets and only 38% booked restaurants with the help of AI. Notably, 45 percent of participants stated that they resorted to the help of AI in solving visa and migration questions, which raises some concerns. MUMBAI: A Reserve Bank of India committee has recommended a framework for developing AI capabilities for the country's financial sector, while safeguarding it against associated risks, according to a report released on Wednesday. The committee has recommended setting up a digital infrastructure to help build indigenous AI models and a multi-stakeholder standing committee to evaluate risks and opportunities. It also suggested building a fund to incentivise the development of homegrown AI models tailored for the needs of India's financial services sector. 'The report envisions a financial ecosystem where encouraging innovation is in harmony, and not at odds, with mitigation of risk,' the RBI said in a statement. The report contains 26 recommendations under six categories including infrastructure, capacity, policy, governance, protection and assurance. India's RBI allows 'vostro' accounts to invest entire surplus in government securities Other key recommendations by the eight-member committee headed by Pushpak Bhattacharyya, a computer scientist at IIT Bombay, include issuing of an enabling framework to integrate AI with existing digital public platforms such as instant payment system UPI, and designing audit frameworks. The central bank had set up the committee in December to develop a Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence (FREEAI) for the finance sector. 'The challenge with regulating AI is in striking the right balance, making sure that society stands to gain from what this technology has to offer, while mitigating its risks,' according to the report.
