Frank's clever kick-off routine

Frank's clever kick-off routine

Yahooa day ago
Thomas Frank's Tottenham have adopted many of the same principles we saw work for Brentford last season, and the novel use of dead-ball situations is one. Of particular note this weekend was the use of the kick-off as a set-piece routine.
Against Burnley, the ball was passed back to Guglielmo Vicario from kick-off as the home team shuffled up the pitch. Burnley logically shuffled deeper, pre-empting a long ball. The deceptive nature of how Vicario shaped up sold this routine further before a shorter pass to Pedro Porro was played.
By finding Porro towards the inner right side of the pitch, closer to goal, the angle he could play the cross at was more likely to result in a dangerous chance. Porro is one of Spurs' strongest crossers, and with Spurs getting an extra body at the back post, on another occasion, this may have resulted in an early goal.
By manufacturing a situation in which the ball is launched long early has the added benefit of getting the ball away from your own goal, so pressure from the opposition can't be applied.
Frank's sides aim to maximise fine-margin gains across the pitch, and the focus on a smart, well-worked kick-off routine is another tool in their expansive skillset. Across this season, they will certainly continue to experiment with their kick-off routines.

Mega owners ready offer for Liverpool star

One Liverpool attacker could be on the move this summer with two mega owners ready to make an offer. All the focus is on who could be coming into the club right now. The focal point being Alexander Isak and the drama that surrounds him. 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the away range TODAY LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! They are relaxed about their activity in the market so far and about the Isak situation. They're also working on other deals. Marc Guehi is one they could still get done before the transfer deadline. Meanwhile, there are also a number of deals Liverpool could complete for departing players. Among them Harvey Elliott is the most sought after player. However, there is also interest in Kostas Tsimikas. Meanwhile, another Liverpool attacker is wanted on a permanent deal. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range So, there is still a lot of moves that could be happening before the window shuts. In fact, for the first time in a while we could actually be in for a busy deadline day. It remains to be seen. One player who could make a surprise move is Lewis Koumas. It's not necessarily a surprise that he might be on the move. What is a surprise is that he could be moving on permanently from the club. That's according to a report from the Liverpool ECHO who claim that Koumas is attracting permanent interest. The report says that Birmingham City and Wrexham AFC are ready for a transfer tug of war in order to acquire the services of Koumas from Liverpool. Now while Liverpool won't want to lose Koumas on a permanent transfer as he still has a lot of potential, Birmingham's and Wrexham's interest will be intriguing enough for the Reds. Both teams have mega owners with Birmingham propped up by Tom Brady and Wrexham supported by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney. Last season, Birmingham shattered the League One transfer record for Jay Stansfield for £20m. This summer Wrexham spent £10m on Nathan Broadhead and £8m on Callum Doyle from Manchester City. Liverpool will have a price for Koumas and it will be around that figure. The ECHO claims that Liverpool value Koumas at a higher price than Bobby Clark, who joined Red Bull Salzburg for £10m last season. The Reds are very good at selling players on for a profit and if Birmingham or Wrexham come in with an offer for Koumas as the ECHO claim they are preparing to do, it will be difficult to refuse. Especially if it's in excess of £10m, something both team is capable of paying given their financial backing. For that price, Liverpool will be making a very healthy profit on a player who has a lot of potential but who doesn't have a clear pathway into the first team at the moment.

Sonny Aljofree: Man United loanee goes from strength to strength

Manchester United loanees were again in action on Wednesday night in League Two. To follow how all the United loaned players are faring, click this page. Sonny Aljofree The centre back started on the right of a back three, as he so often did for Accrington Stanley last season. He has had a mixed start to life at Notts County, being subbed off after only 56 minutes last weekend, Aljofree made a much bigger impression in this game however, scoring his first goal for his new club. The 20-year-old managed an impressive three goals for Accrington last season and once again showed his ability in front of goal, as he scored their second in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town. After a well-worked corner found its way into the box, Aljofree controlled the ball and poked it into the bottom corner, showing almost a striker's instinct in the box. He was also impressive in his defensive duties, making four clearances and winning all his ground duels. The youngster did lose his only aerial battle and made an error leading to a shot from the opposition. Aljofree was also positive on the ball, completing 82% of his pass attempts. He will next be in action when The Magpies host Bromley on Saturday. Elyh Harrison The United keeper started for Shrewsbury and actually conceded the goal against his fellow academy starlet. He did manage to make four saves but he also conceded four goals in the loss. Harrison did make one high claim and completed 76% of his passes. His best stop was also a diving effort to his left that kept out a long range curling shot in the first half. Unfortunately, he did make one error which led to a goal. He was at fault as he failed to hold onto a low cross from out wide and spilt the ball into the path of Matt Dennis, who made no mistake, slotting in the opener after just seven minutes. The United academy keeper will hope to bounce back on Saturday when the Shrews travel to Swindon Town. online polls Follow us on Bluesky: @

'Saw an opportunity' – Romano shares details of surprise €20m deal which will impact Chelsea

Julio Enciso will be a Strasbourg player this season, and will then be a Chelsea player from next season according to Fabrizio Romano. BlueCo completed a surprise deal for Enciso on Wednesday evening , which seemingly came from nowhere and they will pay Brighton a total package of €20m. Enciso made 29 appearances in all competitions for Ipswich last season, scoring three goals and registering four assists, with one of the goals coming against Chelsea. Julio Enciso to be a Chelsea player from next season The deal has come as a surprise, with Enciso very much a versatile attacker, and Chelsea have plenty of those in their squad already. The Paraguay international predominantly plays as a number ten, but can also play on the left, and through the middle if needed. Enciso spent last season on loan at Ipswich. (Photo by) Quite where Enciso will fit in at Stamford Bridge, and what Chelsea's plan is for him remains to be seen, but Romano has provided an update. 'Julio Encisco will be a Strasbourg player this season and then be a Chelsea player until June 2031,' he told his YouTube channel. 'The medical test will take place in London on Thursday. New part of Chelsea's future project! 'Chelsea saw an opportunity and decided to close fast.' Chelsea have a wealth of attacking options With Enciso set to join from next season, there will be pressure on the attacking options to perform in this campaign otherwise they could be out. Enciso has made 57 appearances in total for Brighton, and a season in France should further aid his development, with the Paraguayan clearly a talent.
