Delhi High Court suspends Medha Patkar's sentence in VK Saxena defamation case
In a relief to activist Medha Patkar, the Delhi High Court on Friday suspended her sentence in a defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in which she was arrested and produced in a sessions court earlier in the day.Saxena filed the case 23 years ago when he was heading an NGO in Gujarat.On April 2, a sessions court upheld Patkar's conviction in the defamation case but modified her sentence and released her on "probation of good conduct". Probation is a method of non-institutional treatment of offenders and a conditional suspension of a sentence in which the offender, after conviction, is released on bond of good behaviour instead of being sent to prison.However, a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against her after she failed to honour the conditions of probation on the prescribed date.On Friday, Patkar was arrested and produced before a sessions court, following which the judge orally ordered her release subject to furnishing the bonds.In the meantime, the high court's Justice Shalinder Kaur issued notice on her revision petition challenging her conviction and punishment and later suspended the sentence.Patkar was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 25,000.Underlining the "contentious issues" raised over the suspension of the sentence, the court noted Patkar was taken into custody in execution of the NBW.advertisement"Therefore, in these circumstances, by way of an interim means, the petitioner be released on bail on furnishing a personal bond in the sum of Rs 25,000 with one surety in the like amount to the satisfaction of the ... (trial court)," the high court ordered.The high court granted two weeks to Saxena's counsel to file reply to the revision petition and posted her plea against her punishment in the case on May 20."In the meanwhile, the order on sentence is deferred till the next date of hearing," it said.Patkar withdrew her plea challenging her conviction earlier in the day and filed a fresh one.The 70-year-old Narmada Bachao Andolan leader has challenged the sessions court order which upheld her conviction by a magisterial court.Senior advocate Sanjay Parikh, representing Patkar, said in the execution of the NBW, she has been arrested today and produced before the sessions court.Parikh said that if the petitioner furnished the probation bond before the sessions court, this revision petition would become infructuous and sought suspension of her sentence.Advocate Gajinder Kumar, who appeared for Saxena, opposed the plea and raised an objection, contending that it was an "abuse of process of the law" by the petitioner.advertisementPatkar, he said, was first required to furnish the probation bond and the revision petition could be heard on its merits.The magisterial court on July 1, 2024 sentenced her to five months' simple imprisonment and slapped a Rs 10 lakh fine after finding her guilty under Section 500 (defamation) of the now defunct IPC.Saxena filed the case as president of the National Council of Civil Liberties against Patkar for her defamatory press release against Saxena issued on November 24, 2000.On May 24, 2024, the magisterial court held that Patkar's statements calling Saxena a "coward" and alleging his involvement in hawala transactions were not only defamatory per se but also "crafted to incite negative perceptions" about him.The accusation that the complainant was "mortgaging" the people of Gujarat and their resources to foreign interests was a direct attack on his integrity and public service, it had said.On April 2, an additional sessions judge had dismissed a challenge to the order and held Patkar was "rightly convicted" and there was "no substance" in the appeal against the verdict of her conviction in the defamation case.Must Watch

He recalled how PM Modi personally supported the establishment of his school. 'With his help, we received land in Surat to build the school. Modi ji even inaugurated a hospital for the differently-abled. Once, he told me, 'Start teaching the children from tomorrow morning.' That inspiration led us to launch a BCA college for the differently-abled, which has now received university recognition.' Tailor also highlighted the dire condition of disabled beggars in India. 'Many of them are forced to live on railway platforms and streets. After they die, their bodies remain unclaimed,' he said with emotion. To address this, he has initiated the construction of an old-age home in Bharuch's Uchedia village along the Narmada river for 12 disabled individuals. 'This will be like a resort and will cost around Rs 20 crore,' he shared. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel laid the foundation stone of the project, and KP Group Chairman Faruk Patel has taken responsibility for the home. Praising PM Modi's eye for talent and commitment to recognising real social heroes, Tailor said, 'Modi ji travels across India and notices people who are genuinely working for society. He immediately understands their character and ensures they are recognised. For those who receive the Padma awards, it's often a complete surprise. An FIR was filed at the Versova police station on June 6 against filmmaker-writer . He is known for writing films like Sarkar and SECTION 375, while directing Rahasya, The Stoneman Murders, 420 IPC and One Friday Night. According to Versova police, the incident occurred after an argument over the latter's salary at Gupta's Andheri (west) office at 8.30pm on June 5. According to a report in TOI, Lashkar, who served as Gupta's driver for three years until his May 30 termination, said his Rs 23,000 salary remained outstanding. His statement reads: "There has been instances when the film director used to indulge in fight whenever I asked for my salary which was never paid on time. This time he removed me from the job when I asked for my April month's salary which was yet to be paid." Gupta has categorically dismissed the allegations. In an exclusive interview with Bombay Times, he said, 'It's a false FIR, filed with an intent of extorting money, systematically played out under the guidance of a criminal lawyer.' He added, 'We are going to initiate criminal proceedings against Lashkar and put him behind bars. I want to expose these false FIRs racket.' Ahead of narrating the incident, Gupta shared a CCTV footage of the driver leaving the building premises (his back facing the camera) with Bombay Times and documents that reveal his advance salary claim to Lashkar as well as the driver's speeding tickets for rash driving. It was very illogical. He wanted to quit my job. I had paid him an advance (Rs 41,500), which was much more than his monthly salary. This has been acknowledged by him on paper. I told him, if you're quitting, obviously the advance is going to be deducted from your salary. That didn't go down well with him, and this was his way of extorting money from me. I asked him to drop my car keys and leave. He left in a lift and while exiting the lift, held his hand over his stomach as if he was covering a wound, no blood stain is visible in the CCTV footage. The other footage which captures him walking away, shows how normal he seems while walking away. I am sure he went to his people, inflicted a harmless injury to himself and then went to the cops at 2 am. Why didn't he go to the cops directly? He tried to create this chain of events. When the cops came over to my office the next day to investigate, they also called him, he's walking, holding his stomach, taking the support of some other guy, and he's walking half a step at a time. His actions looked staged. The cops didn't find any kitchen knife because I don't have a kitchen in my office. You just get tea, coffee, biscuits. He needed the money badly for his house and daughter's education and on humanitarian grounds, I gave him the advance, and this is how he repays me.' Gupta concludes, 'I have given my statement to the police. The evidence that I showed you, has also been given to the police. In a nutshell, this is a false FIR, filed with an intention of extorting money. It has been systematically played out under guidance of a criminal lawyer. My lawyer is , and we are going to initiate criminal proceedings against this person. The CCTV footage of seconds after the incident clearly shows he is walking very normally, very casually and not at all like a person who has been attacked with a knife as he is claiming. It is very clear evidence of his lying, and he has inflicted this injury later on himself in order to build some sort of circumstance to file a false FIR. I want to expose this false FIRs racket. '

Telangana: Excise Department seize 56 liquor bottles worth Rs 2.50 lakhs in three cases; Four arrested for illicit transportation
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 9 (ANI): The Excise Department's Special Enforcement Team (SET) seized 56 liquor bottles worth Rs 2.50 lakhs in three separate operations and arrested four individuals for illegal possession and transportation of liquor, according to the official statement. The raids were conducted in different locations, including Secunderabad, a railway station, and a private residence in West Marredpally. According to Excise official,' In the first case, the STF team, led by CI Nagaraju and SI Jyothi, seized 20 signature bottles from an individual named Sri Pana Raman near the Military Hospital in Secunderabad. In the second case, the same team caught Ajay Singh, a passenger who arrived from Bengaluru by the KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express. He was found carrying 44 bottles of Corona Extra Beer and four additional liquor bottles. The third raid was carried out at a house in West Marredpally based on a tip-off about ganja sales. The operation, led by CI Bhiksha Reddy, SI Balaraju, and SI Sandhya, resulted in the seizure of 13 grams of OG Kush ganja and 32 liquor bottles. The bottles were reportedly brought from Goa, Manipur, and Delhi. As per the release, two individuals, Runith and Aditya, were arrested during the raid. 'The duo was arrested for storing and selling the liquor,' said Pradeep Rao, the team leader of the operation. According to the Excise officials, the total value of liquor seized across the three cases has been estimated at Rs. 2.50 lakhs. 'These operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal liquor trade in the region,' an official from the Excise Department said. (ANI)
