Scottish cities crowned Disney Adult Capitals of the UK for 2025

Daily Record7 hours ago

Disney adults are a growing fanbase in Scotland, treating Disney not just as entertainment but as a way of life
Whether you find them enchanting or a little over-the-top, 'Disney adults' are a growing force, and new figures show that Scotland is one of their favourite places to call home.
New data from AttractionTickets.com has revealed the UK's Disney Adult Capitals, based on solo and couple ticket bookings to Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris and Disneyland California over the past 12 months.

Glasgow came in second place, with 1,347 bookings, beating out much larger cities, while Edinburgh and Dundee also made the top 20, ranking 10th and 19th respectively.

London took the top spot overall, but cities across Scotland and the North of England dominated the list, highlighting the nationwide appeal of the Disney brand among adult fans.
Disney adults, affectionately known as 'Disnerds' or 'Disneyphiles,' aren't just casual viewers of animated films. They're part of a passionate and highly engaged community that treats Disney not just as entertainment, but as a lifestyle.
From wearing themed clothing and collecting merchandise to organising elaborate Disney -themed holidays, events, and even weddings, many adults have fully embraced the magic of Mickey and beyond.
The phenomenon may feel modern, but it dates back decades. Adult fandom has been steadily growing since the opening of Disneyland in 1955 and Walt Disney World in 1971.
Originally marketed as family destinations, the timeless stories, nostalgia, and immersive environments captured the imaginations of adults just as much as children.

Chris Bradshaw, Marketing Director at AttractionTickets.com, believes that shift is now reflected in the way people travel: "This data shows that a huge number of adults across the UK enjoy travelling to Disney parks solo or in a couple without children.
"Cities like Glasgow and Liverpool ranking so highly also suggests that the Disney fandom is thriving well beyond the capital, and even some smaller areas like Dundee and Warrington."

He added: "From our internal data, we're seeing that Disney parks are no longer viewed just as family destinations. Increasingly, they appeal to adults who are eager to experience the nostalgia, themed dining, and seasonal events that make Disney parks unique.
"This shift has a direct impact on how we approach marketing and packaging trips for a grown-up audience and we welcome any Disney adults who want to experience the magic of Disney with us.'

The fandom's recent growth has been fuelled not just by Disney's expanded universe, which now includes Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar, but also by the rise of online communities.
Instagram pages, YouTube channels, fan forums and meme groups have created space for Disney adults to connect, share travel tips, and feel a sense of belonging among like-minded fans.
Even in smaller cities like Dundee, the numbers show that Disney's appeal among adults is alive and well.
The rankings also saw Wigan, Swansea and Warrington outperform bigger cities like Brighton and Hove, Coventry and Milton Keynes, proving that love for the House of Mouse knows no geographic boundaries.

Lorraine Kelly 'terrified' climbing up RRS Discovery ship mast in Dundee

"I'm not good with heights, so it was scary, I was shaking like a leaf.' Lorraine Kelly said she was "shaking like a leaf" as she scaled the mast of the RRS Discovery ship in Dundee, ahead of the daring experience opening to the public later this year. She joined fellow TV presenter Dan Snow in a race up the 25-metre mast on Friday, June 27, with Snow just beating her to the top by a few minutes. The pair then abseiled back to the ground. ‌ The climb aims to recreate the working conditions the ship's original crew faced when it voyaged to Antarctica 124 years ago, albeit they endured harsh weather conditions and no modern safety precautions. ‌ After reaching the top, both stars waved for the cameras below. Snow spoke into the microphone of a camera drone above, with little-to-no fear in his voice. Lorraine later said: 'The experience in general was absolutely terrifying and the only reason I think I got through it was because Dan Snow was doing it as well. 'He looked so calm as he was shimmying up the rigging. That made me feel a bit better, but I'm not good with heights, so it was scary, I was shaking like a leaf, but it's really good to be back on dry land.' Led by the Dundee Heritage Trust, the Discovery Mast Climb will be open for members of the public to experience this autumn. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The Cutty Sark in London and SS Great Britain in Bristol offer a similar challenge. Lorraine, a patron of the Dundee Heritage Trust alongside Snow, added: 'The Discovery ship is beautiful, she's the symbol of Dundee. I'm obsessed with all things Antarctica, and she went to Antarctica. 'She's an old girl so she needs a lot of maintenance, and obviously that costs a lot of money. This was all about raising awareness of the Discovery and letting everyone in Dundee have a look at her.' ‌ She said the experience also highlighted the country's former ties to the whaling industry, which was abolished in Scotland in 1963. She said: 'Dundee's links with Antarctica and South Georgia are very important, and this whole weekend is really about that. It's about looking back on the whaling industry, which was a big part of the city, and looking forward to the fact that we don't do that anymore – thank goodness – and we're trying to save these beautiful animals, so it's a celebration of the future.' Asked if she would consider such a climb again, Kelly joked: 'I don't think I'll ever do anything like that again. I'll leave that to the experts.'

California legislature acts to keep film and TV production at home

Hollywood's home state of California will more than double annual tax incentives for film and television production to $750m under a measure passed by the Democratic-led legislature on Friday. The increase from the current $330m was approved as part of a broader tax bill that is expected to be signed into law by California's governor, Gavin Newsom. Newsom has advocated for the boost, a step to help reverse a years-long exodus of production from California to places such as Britain, Canada and other US states that offer generous tax credits and rebates. Producers, directors, actors and crew members have warned lawmakers that Hollywood was at risk of becoming the next Detroit, the former automaking capital devastated by overseas competition. Permitting data showed production in Los Angeles, the location of major studios including Walt Disney and Netflix, fell to the second-lowest level on record in 2024. California has lost more than 17,000 jobs since 2022 from its declining share of the entertainment industry, according to union estimates. Producer Uri Singer said he shot three films in New York to take advantage of its tax incentives. He received a California tax credit to shoot his current project, a horror flick called Corporate Retreat, in Los Angeles. 'You can get such good cast and crew that are available that makes shooting in LA financially better,' he said. 'Besides that, creatively you find here anyone you want, and if you need another crane, within an hour you have a crane.' Plus, 'the crew is happy because they go home every day,' Singer added. 'The Entertainment Union Coalition applauds today's announcement,' said Rebecca Rhine, the president of a coalition of unions and guilds that represent writers, musicians, directors and other film professionals, in a statement. 'The expanded funding of our program is an important reminder of the strength and resiliency of our members, the power of our broad-based union and guild coalition, and the role our industry plays in supporting our state's economy.' 'It's now time to get people back to work and bring production home to California,' Rhine added. 'We call on the studios to recommit to the communities and workers across the state that built this industry and built their companies.' Local advocates applauded California's expansion of tax incentives, though they said more needs to be done. Writer Alexandra Pechman, an organizer of a Stay in LA campaign by Hollywood workers, called on traditional studios and expanding internet platforms to commit to a specific amount of spending in California to support creative workers. 'It's time for the studios and streamers to do their part to turn this win into real change for all of us,' Pechman said. Industry supporters also are pushing for federal tax incentives to keep filming in the United States. Donald Trump claimed in May that he had authorized government agencies to impose a 100% tariff on movies produced overseas. The movie tariff has not been implemented.
