US sprinter Kerley provisionally suspended for whereabouts failures

NEW YORK - Olympic 100 metres silver and bronze medallist Fred Kerley has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit for whereabouts failures, the organisation said on Tuesday.
The 2022 World Champion in the 100m withdrew from the U.S. track and field trials late last month, writing on social media that he was: "Taking some time out to get back on track."
"The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles," he wrote on X. "Thanks to all my supporters."
His representative was not immediately available to comment. REUTERS

Brother of Manchester suicide bomber charged over attack on jail guards

Hashem Abedi, the elder brother of Salman Abedi who killed 22 people at the Manchester Arena in northern England, was charged with five offences following an incident in April this year at HMP Frankland jail when four prison officers were injured, British police said. He is accused of three counts of attempted murder, one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of unauthorised possession of a knife. He is due to appear at London's Westminster Magistrates Court on September 18. Hashem Abedi was jailed for at least 55 years in 2020 after being convicted of helping his brother plan the attack which injured more than 200 and whose victims included seven children. The brothers, born to Libyan parents who emigrated to Britain during the rule of late leader Muammar Gaddafi, had plotted the attack at their home in south Manchester, prosecutors said. REUTERS

Williams became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns at last month's Washington Open after a 16-month absence from competitive tennis. She last played in the U.S. Open singles main draw in 2023, losing in the first round to Belgian Greet Minnen. The seven-time Grand Slam winner is also playing in the tournament's new-look mixed doubles tournament with compatriot Reilly Opelka. Other women's singles wildcards included France's Caroline Garcia, in what will likely be the 2022 semi-finalist's last appearance at Flushing Meadows.
