'Special' Bumrah message gave me confidence, says Green before WTC return
On the eve of his back surgery last October, Cameron Green received a message that meant more than most — India's pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, reached out from the middle of a Test match.
'Jasprit Bumrah reached out the night before I was getting surgery. He was in the middle of a Test match in India,' Green told reporters. 'Just a few things like that are really special and makes you feel a lot better about it.'
Green, who played alongside Bumrah in the 2023 IPL for Mumbai Indians, drew strength from Bumrah's recovery journey. The Indian quick returned from the same procedure to star in India's 2024 T20 World Cup campaign and dominated the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, claiming 32 wickets and the Player of the Series award.
'To watch him during the summer... filled me with a lot of confidence,' Green added.
The 26-year-old opted for surgery to remove excess bone growth near his L4 vertebra, which had limited spinal movement and caused a rare facet joint fracture. Support also came from fellow pacers Jason Behrendorff and Ben Dwarshuis, who had undergone similar operations.
Now fit again, Green is set to feature in the WTC Final against South Africa as a specialist batter, following a prolific run in County cricket, where he hit three centuries in five matches for Gloucestershire..
'The silver lining to having back injuries is I've got four chances only to be a batter,' he said. While he's likely to bat at No. 3, a rare spot for him at First-Class level, he added, 'Absolutely no issues batting at three when you've done it your whole life.'
