From Grit to Glory: Rockford Hosts Illinois' First IRONMAN, Cementing Its Role on the National Sports Stage

The sold-out IRONMAN 70.3 marks a multi-year partnership and a $25M economic win for Rockford
ROCKFORD, Ill., June 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 10,000 athletes and spectators are arriving in Rockford today as the city hosts Illinois' first-ever IRONMAN 70.3, a sold-out race that marks the beginning of a multi-year partnership and further positions Rockford as a sports hub powerhouse.
The multi-year partnership with IRONMAN is expected to deliver more than $25 million in economic impact through 2027, generating an estimated $8 million in direct visitor spending in the first year alone. From hotels and restaurants to local shops and tourism-related jobs, Rockford's small business community is poised to benefit from the city's investment in athletic events that drive lasting momentum.
'This is a major milestone—not just for our team, but for the entire Rockford community,' said John Groh, President/CEO of Go Rockford. 'To be chosen as Illinois' first IRONMAN host city speaks to the caliber of what we've built—a welcoming, event-ready destination with national appeal. It's the result of strong local partnerships and a clear vision for how sports tourism can drive lasting impact.'
The 70.3-mile course showcases the region's natural and urban assets: a 1.2-mile swim in the Rock River, a 56-mile bike ride through the scenic countryside of Winnebago County and the historic Village of Rockton, and a 13.1-mile run along the Rockford riverfront path, culminating in a downtown finish line celebration.
IRONMAN selected Rockford after a highly competitive, multi-city vetting process, citing the city's: Proven record of hosting high-caliber athletic events across youth, amateur, and collegiate levels
Robust infrastructure, including modern sports facilities and a walkable, revitalized downtown
Natural amenities like Rock Cut State Park and the Rock River, ideal for endurance sports
Strategic Midwest location with easy access via I-90, multiple airports, and proximity to major metros including Chicago
Strong community partnerships and a demonstrated ability to mobilize volunteers and local support
More than 1,000 Rockford-area volunteers have stepped up to support the race—showing off Rockford's civic pride, hospitality, and unity. Their commitment, along with extensive coordination across City of Rockford departments including Public Works, Police, and Fire, ensures a seamless, safe, and welcoming experience for athletes and spectators alike.
The event was made possible through a grant from the State of Illinois' $15 million Tourism Incentive Program, which supports efforts to bring marquee events to the state. IRONMAN joins a growing slate of top-tier competitions headed to Rockford, including the 2026 American Hockey League All-Star Classic and the 2026 WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Group Stage—affirming Rockford's emergence as a go-to destination for high-profile sports.

There is no one in the NFL like Commanders TE John Bates

You don't often pay backup tight ends $21 million over three seasons when they have 61 career receptions in four NFL seasons. Not every tight end who averages 15 receptions per season is Washington Commanders tight John Bates, either. After last season, Washington's top two tight ends, Zach Ertz and John Bates, were free agents. The Commanders prioritized both. Ertz was brought back on a one-year deal, something he's comfortable with at this stage of his career, while Bates signed a three-year extension. The fifth-year tight end from Boise State is one of the few draft success stories from the Ron Rivera era. The Commanders showed Bates the love he deserves. So why is a fifth-year tight end with only 61 career receptions so in-demand? We'll show you. Longtime for NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz: Nobody breaks it down like Brian Baldinger: You get the point. Bates is good at what he does. In fact, he's the best at what he does, which is why he would've had numerous suitors in the offseason had he chosen to entertain offers from other teams. Please make no mistake, he can make plays in the passing game, too, when his number is called. Bates is the reason Kliff Kingsbury loves to keep two tight ends on the field. He's like an extra offensive lineman. While he's a solid pass blocker, Bates is a difference-maker in the run game. When you look back at Washington's surprising offensive success last season, Bates was an integral part of that success. This offseason, the Commanders prioritized upgrading the offensive line, which should help the run game. Bates' return, much like his career, goes under the radar. He wouldn't have it any other way. Earlier this offseason, Ertz called Bates the best blocking tight end he'd ever been around. Washington is happy to have Bates, as keeping him was quietly one of its best offseason moves. Goldman Traders Say It's Time to Buy the Dip in Momentum Stocks

(Bloomberg) -- Sharp losses in high-flying momentum stocks may present a dip-buying opportunity if history is any guide, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.'s trading desk. The traders cited rebounds after similar prior losses in Goldman's High Beta Momentum basket, coupled with the current technical setup. Why New York City Has a Fleet of New EVs From a Dead Carmaker Trump Takes Second Swing at Cutting Housing Assistance for Immigrants Chicago Schools Seeks $1 Billion of Short-Term Debt as Cash Gone Neom's Desert Ski Resort Strains Saudi Prince's $1.5 Trillion Plan When the long-short momentum basket dropped 10% or more over a five-day span in the past, it proceeded to rise in the following week 80% of the time, the traders wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. The median return was 4.5% in the next week and more than 11% in the next month. The sudden unwind in the momentum strategy, which focuses on buying recent winners and selling short those that are lagging behind, first came amid a rally in the basket's stocks meant to be shorted. But its declines this week were powered more by losses in the long leg of the basket 'as themes such as AI feel the pain of this rotation,' Goldman's traders wrote. The basket fell 13% from Aug. 6 through Aug. 19 after trading near an all-time high. The traders also parsed through technical charts for clues on what could stop the selloff in the momentum trade. The momentum basket is trading near an oversold territory and is approaching the bottom of its so-called regression channel, which is basically the lower boundary of an existing trend. The basket also fell below its 200-day moving average, the level that could serve as a major support. 'It could be a good entry point into the historically rewarded factor, unless tech earnings next week drive a prolonged AI selloff,' Goldman's traders wrote. Nvidia Corp., the biggest member in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indexes, is scheduled to release its quarterly results on Aug. 27. Some of the stock market's biggest losers in the past three days include Palantir Technologies Inc., which fell 12%, and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Super Micro Computer Inc., which lost 6% or more. Nvidia fell just 2.8% during that time, but its heavy weighting in benchmark indexes made it a drag on the market. Those stocks 'were among the year's most crowded trades, built on optimism toward AI and speculative momentum, making them vulnerable to swift reversals,' Chris Murphy, co-head of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna International Group, wrote in a note. The selloff in the momentum factor, which includes high-flying AI stocks on the long side of the basket, comes amid a variety of concerns in the market including soaring valuations, stretched positioning and increasing competition from China. The Nasdaq 100 Index is trading at 27 times expected 12-month profits, almost a third above its long-term average. Meanwhile, China's warnings to tech firms to avoid one of Nvidia's chips and a drop in cloud-computing company CoreWeave Inc.'s shares after its earnings report were among other recent headwinds to momentum stocks. Another source of concern for tech investors cropped up this week as a Massachusetts Institute of Technology report found that most generative AI initiatives implemented to drive revenue growth are falling flat and only 5% of generative AI pilots are delivering profit. Still, this isn't the only stumble for Goldman's High-Beta Momentum basket this year: This is its fourth retreat of more than 10% in 2025. 'The recent decline in momentum is indicative of how the factor has been trading all year. It's been a frustrating and choppy trade through all of 2025,' said Bloomberg Intelligence's Christopher Cain. 'While the recent decline could be a tactical opportunity, we also point out that that high momentum stocks are showing some of the most expensive valuations compared to low momentum in history.' 3 Small-Cap Stocks We Think Twice About

Small-cap stocks can be incredibly lucrative investments because their lack of analyst coverage leads to frequent mispricings. However, these businesses (and their stock prices) often stay small because their subscale operations make it harder to expand their competitive moats. These trade-offs can cause headaches for even the most seasoned professionals, which is why we started StockStory - to help you separate the good companies from the bad. Keeping that in mind, here are three small-cap stocks to avoid and some other investments you should consider instead. (CARS) Market Cap: $740.4 million Originally started as a joint venture between several media companies including The Washington Post and The New York Times, (NYSE:CARS) is a digital marketplace that connects new and used car buyers and sellers. Why Does CARS Fall Short? Market opportunities are plateauing as its dealer customers were flat over the last two years Estimated sales growth of 2% for the next 12 months implies demand will slow from its three-year trend Falling earnings per share over the last three years has some investors worried as stock prices ultimately follow EPS over the long term At $12.05 per share, trades at 3.5x forward EV/EBITDA. Read our free research report to see why you should think twice about including CARS in your portfolio, it's free. Matthews (MATW) Market Cap: $724.2 million Originally a death care company, Matthews International (NASDAQ:MATW) is a diversified company offering ceremonial services, brand solutions and industrial technologies. Why Are We Out on MATW? Annual sales declines of 6.5% for the past two years show its products and services struggled to connect with the market Earnings per share fell by 14.8% annually over the last five years while its revenue grew, showing its incremental sales were much less profitable Cash-burning tendencies make us wonder if it can sustainably generate shareholder value Matthews's stock price of $23.52 implies a valuation ratio of 15.4x forward EV-to-EBITDA. Dive into our free research report to see why there are better opportunities than MATW. CTS (CTS) Market Cap: $1.22 billion With roots dating back to 1896 and a global manufacturing footprint, CTS (NYSE:CTS) designs and manufactures sensors, connectivity components, and actuators for aerospace, defense, industrial, medical, and transportation markets. Why Do We Think Twice About CTS? Annual sales declines of 5.7% for the past two years show its products and services struggled to connect with the market during this cycle Revenue base of $520.9 million puts it at a disadvantage compared to larger competitors exhibiting economies of scale Earnings per share have dipped by 4.5% annually over the past two years, which is concerning because stock prices follow EPS over the long term CTS is trading at $41.55 per share, or 17.3x forward P/E. Check out our free in-depth research report to learn more about why CTS doesn't pass our bar.
