Guan Eng takes Tajuddin to court for alleged defamatory comments
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP advisor Lim Guan Eng has filed a defamation suit against former Umno lawmaker Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman over remarks he made in a media interview three years ago. The Bagan member of parliament filed the lawsuit via Messrs. Guok Partnership by naming the former Pasir Salak MP as the sole defendant at the High Court here today. According to the statement of claim, Lim alleged that Tajuddin, a former Umno supreme council member, had uttered the remarks during a media interview discussing on the 15th general election on Oct 18, 2022. The plaintiff claimed the statements were published and aired through official portals of Malay daily Sinar Harian, several news portals, and communicated widely through the internet and social medias. "The defamatory statements were made with a view of painting a bad picture against the plaintiff as a politician who was racist, anti-Malay, anti-Muslim, and insensitive to Malays, among others. "The defamatory statements made by the defendant was also intended to inflame the hatred and contempt the Malay and Muslim voters towards the plaintiff. "The conduct of the defendant in issuing and publishing the defamatory statements were indeed malicious and with mala fide intent," claimed the plaintiff. Lim claimed that the remarks painted him as an incompetent minister who had carried out his duties recklessly. He further alleged that the statement suggested he had abused his position by purportedly dismissing Malay civil servants serving in the Finance Ministry at the time. "The impugned statements also depict the plaintiff as a racist and practices racial discrimination against the Malay civil servants and destroyed the racial harmony by practicing race-based policies and discriminated other races over his own race. "On Nov 4, 2022, the plaintiff issued a letter of demand to the defendant demanding for an unconditional apology and RM2 million for damages. "However, the defendant refused to respond to or comply with the plaintiff's letter of demand," he claimed. Lim is seeking Tajuddin to issue an apology via all newspapers in this country including online portal as well as retraction of all the impugned statements. He is also seeking general, aggravated and punitive damages.

Shahelmey holds off on political move as state election looms
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya has yet to make an official decision on his political direction ahead of the 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). The Tanjung Keramat assemblyman, who was suspended from Sabah Umno membership for six years, said he would make an announcement when the time is right. "My direction for PRN17 will be made at a time I feel is appropriate," he said when contacted today. He was responding to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's remarks on Sunday in Putatan, where Hajiji said Shahelmey would be joining his team in PRN17 when asked about the state Works Minister's position. The statement has been interpreted as indicating a move to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), which Hajiji chairs. Shahelmey, who is also the Putatan MP, said he appreciated the chief minister's comment and saw it as a sign of recognition for his support of Hajiji's leadership and the current GRS–Pakatan Harapan (PH) Plus government. "I also welcome the chief minister's openness and acceptance of my presence," he said. Shahelmey had previously hinted at the possibility of defending the Tanjung Keramat state seat, which he won under a Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket in the 16th state election (PRN16) in September 2020. However, questions have arisen over which party he would represent, as Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had earlier announced Putatan UMNO division chief Jeffrey Nor Mohamed as BN's candidate for the seat. Bung Moktar had stated that Shahelmey would not be renominated, following his suspension from Umno for allegedly defying the party's decision. Shahelmey had refused to withdraw support for the GRS government after Umno Sabah lost confidence in Hajiji in January 2023. At the time, Shahelmey insisted on continuing to support Hajiji and his government, rejecting Umno's attempt to change the state government through cooperation with Parti Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM). That attempt, dubbed the "Kinabalu Move", failed after Shahelmey, alongside five other BN assemblymen and seven PH assemblymen, backed Hajiji's leadership and the GRS‑led government. If Shahelmey joins GRS and contests under the coalition's ticket in PRN17, he risks losing his qualification as Putatan MP due to the anti‑hopping law. Should this occur, a by‑election (PRK) must be held for the Putatan parliamentary seat — unless the current Parliament has already surpassed the three‑year mark, in which case the seat remains vacant until the 16th General Election (GE16).
