5 soldiers shot at US Army's Fort Stewart base in Georgia, shooter in custody
Five American soldiers were shot at the Fort Stewart base in the state of Georgia on Wednesday, and the suspected shooter is in custody, US Army officials said. The soldiers were treated on site and then transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment, Fort Stewart said in a social media post. 'There is no active threat to the community,' the post said. Parts of the base in southeast Georgia were locked down after the shooter was reported on the sprawling Army post, a spokesperson said. A post on a Fort Stewart social media account told all personnel in the locked down area to 'stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors'. Located about 64km (40 miles) southwest of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members.

Teen in South Korea arrested over mall bomb threat, 4,000 evacuated
A middle-school student in South Korea was arrested on Wednesday over an online bomb threat that led to about 4,000 people being evacuated from a major department store in Seoul. Police tracked the male teen suspect to his home in Jeju city at 7pm local time (6pm Hong Kong time) on Tuesday, using the internet protocol (IP) address from a post made on the online forum DC Inside, according to the Korea Times. Titled 'Shinsegae Department Store Bombing Notice', the message posted around noon warned that there were explosives planted on the first floor of the complex that would be detonated at 3pm on Tuesday, urging online users to avoid the venue. The Korea Times reported that more than 240 police and emergency personnel were deployed for the bomb search after a report was made at lunchtime that day. The store resumed normal operations later in the afternoon after no explosives were found. Vowing to pursue damages from the culprit, the Shinsegae department store condemned the bomb scare in a statement, estimating losses from the 2½-hour incident at up to 600 million won (US$431,000). Yonhap news agency reported that the boy, identified as a juvenile by police, was in his first year of middle school and faced charges of public intimidation . He had admitted to the online post during questioning.

2 arrested as Hong Kong customs seizes 20kg of cannabis buds at airport
Hong Kong customs has seized HK$4 million worth of suspected cannabis buds at the airport and arrested two passengers who arrived from Bangkok. A spokesman for the Customs and Excise Department said on Sunday that officers had detected suspected cannabis buds in the check-in suitcases of two men during the clearance process after arrival. 'Customs will continue to step up enforcement against drug trafficking activities through intelligence analysis,' the spokesman said. 'The department also reminds members of the public to stay alert and not participate in drug trafficking activities for monetary return.' The two suspects, aged 35 and 48, were each allegedly carrying about 10kg of suspected cannabis buds in their checked-in luggage. The non-local men flew to the city from the Thai capital, but customs did not disclose if they were on the same Bangkok flight.
