TV fans beat the heat and binge iconic 90s series streaming for free

Metro2 days ago
Looking for a way to escape the scorching temperatures across the UK this weekend? Look no further, as Byker Grove is now available to stream for the first time ever.
Temperatures are set to soar to 30° in parts of the country, which will be welcome to some after the chaos Storm Floris caused earlier in the week.
But for those who prefer to cool off indoors, legendary 90s series Byker may be your saviour.
The children's soap opera, which originally aired between 1989 and 2006, was added to STV Player earlier this month.
It's just the latest in a long line of cult series that have been added to the Scottish streamer, joining Brookside, Take The High Road and New Zealand hit Shortland Street.
Byker launched the careers of some of telly's biggest names including Ant and Dec and Jill Halfpenny, as well as Hollywood star Charlie Hunnam.
The show follows the daily exploits of the children and staff who frequent a fictional youth club in the Byker district of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Groundbreaking for the time, storylines included teenage pregnancy, homelessness, drug abuse and the first gay kiss on children's television.
The scene, which saw Noddy Fishwick (Brett Adams) peck Gary Hendrix (George Trotter) on the cheek, saw calls for executive producer Matthew Robinson to lose his job.
It's without a doubt that the best remembered episode concerns Ant McPartlin's character PJ being blinded in both eyes with a paintball gun.

Now, viewers have flocked to social media to share their delight at the Grove's return to our screens, with one saying they were going to binge the episodes across a weekend.
Emma said she was 'going to watch them all' after losing track when she reached adulthood.
'Has anyone else let their kids watch it yet? I let my son (13) watch this morning for the first time, he has fallen in love with it,' asked Lee.
In response, Raymond said: 'My kids are 12 and 16 and they love it. I live in Newcastle so I like to look at how things have changed from when I was young.'
Superfan Zoe, who travelled seven hours to visit the show's filming location – a former tower house and pub which is now an Islamic school – added: 'Sadly, my kids just think it's really lame and old fashioned.'
You can't please everyone!

Despite that, she might've made a breakthrough: 'Since I've started re-watching Byker Grove, my youngest has asked when we're going back to Newcastle.'
'Watching this as an adult brings a whole different perspective,' she continued, reflecting on a story that saw siblings Spuggie (Lyndann Barrass) and Fraser Campbell (John Jefferson) in care.
'Back then I thought the adults were being unreasonable.' More Trending
Iain agreed: 'The storyline about Fraser's family life was really hard hitting. Never appreciated this at the time I watched it originally.
'Suppose that's what made it a really good programme as it didn't shy away from those issues.'
The entire run of Byker Grove, series 1-18, is available to stream on STV Player now .

Devastation as EastEnders fan-favourite reconsiders return

Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) has been left devastated in EastEnders, after learning daughter Lily (Lillia Turner) has postponed her return to Walford. Lily made a temporary departure in May, after realising that she needed time away from her mum in the wake of her step-father Martin Fowler's (James Bye) death. Martin tragically passed away in February, falling victim to the horrific explosion that tore through The Queen Vic pub. There seemed to be a glimmer of hope as he made his exit towards the barrel store with Stacey, but a beam fell from the ceiling and crushed him. As he lay dying, he confessed his love for Stace – telling her that his reunion with Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) was a mistake. In the aftermath, she struggled immensely with her grief, neglecting to care for Lily and her younger siblings Arthur and Hope. Lily even turned to drink and drugs to ease her own pain. A vicious argument between mother and daughter ensued, and Lily declared that she was packing her bags and going to stay with birth father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott). In tonight's episode, Stacey was thrilled to hear that her eldest was coming home. Amid the buzz and excitement, she noticed that a number of market traders were staring in her direction and gossiping. But what about? To her horror, it became apparent that someone had leaked all of her SecretCam content – the BBC soap's dupe version of OnlyFans – online, for all to see. And given we saw troubled Joel Marshall (Max Murray) accessing her profile last week, it's probably who we'd put our money on being responsible! In fact, following their earlier run-in, Stace' reckoned it was him too. She charged into the caff and outright accused him, with dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) leaping to his defence. Joel swore that he wasn't responsible, and back at home, willingly handed over his laptop to prove that he didn't leak the adult material. More Trending He also told Ross and Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) to check his deleted files, as they wouldn't find anything that would incriminate him. Despite that, Stacey remained convinced – especially when she realised that the wording in the online posts matched what he'd said to her in person during a verbal attack. To make matters worse for poor Stace', she then discovered that Lily wasn't returning home as she was too embarrassed by the revenge porn situation. Martin Scorsese 'threatened to get gun' after bold Taxi Driver request from bosses

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese has revealed he was that miffed by a request from movie bosses that he threatened to get a gun and destroy a copy of hit film Taxi Driver Martin Scorsese has revealed the backlash to his hit film Taxi Driver was so strong, he threatened to buy a gun. The award-winning director said he was willing to destroy a cut of the 1976 movie instead of making the changes suggested. ‌ Fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg revealed Scorsese was asked to cut violence from Taxi Driver, which he strongly refused. He shared how he had received a call from a "very upset" Scorsese. ‌ The director had been asked to reduce violence in a scene from the psychological thriller. It comes after Richard Osman reveals axed Ant and Dec show was 'expensive car crash'. ‌ In the first look at Apple TV+'s upcoming documentary series about the director, Spielberg recalled: ''Steve, Steve, it's Marty, Steve. Can you come over to the house?' "'They want me to cut all the blood spurting, they want me to cut all the blood spurting, they want me to cut the guy who loses his hand'.' Scorsese was asked whether he had a gun at this time, which he denied. ‌ However, he admitted he was threatening to get one. 'I was going to get one,' Scorsese said. 'But I wasn't going to get it, really? I was angry and said I'm going to threaten them or maybe just shoot or something, I had no idea, I mean I was threatening. 'What I wanted to do, and not with a gun, I would go in, find out where the rough cut is and break the windows and take it away. They're going to destroy the film anyway, you know, so let me destroy it. 'I'll destroy it but before destroying it I'm going to steal it." Scorsese revealed Spielberg stepped in as he tried to stop him taking such drastic action. ‌ 'Spielberg and a number of others said 'Marty, stop that, Marty, you can't do that'," he explained. The scene in question was changed ever so slightly as Scorsese "toned the colour down." Spielberg confessed it meant none of the violence had to be cut from the film and 'saved the movie'. Taxi Driver features Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a former US marine who becomes a taxi driver, which earned him his first Oscar nomination. Its also saw co-star Jodie Foster nominated in the best supporting actress category. The five-part documentary series, directed by award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Miller, features Scorsese's personal archive and interviews with collaborators including actors De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio. It follows the director from his time as a New York University student to the present day, exploring the themes that have influenced his work. The series will be released on the streaming platform on October 17.

Sturgeon on TV: Golden gal takes on Little Miss Brass Neck. Who won?

Prime Ministers, presidents, princes, Hillary Clinton, Angelina Jolie - Julie has sat knee to knee with them all. But how would the golden gal of British broadcasting fare against the big brass neck of Scottish politics? Viewers turned to Nicola Sturgeon: the Interview to find out. 'The' interview suggested something special, but filming took place in Ayrshire ten days ago. Since then Ms Sturgeon has been all over the Murdoch press and every other branch of the media, her book picked cleaner than a turkey on Boxing Day. This, however, was the first broadcast interview, which meant the first chance to see Ms Sturgeon becoming 'emotional' as television folk coyly call it when someone cries on camera. Etchingham had dressed in cool neutrals for the occasion, with Sturgeon opting for a scarlet jacket. Perhaps she was trying to channel her inner Butlin's Redcoat to jolly things past the difficult stuff. It didn't work. Certainly there was no May-like confession to stealing from the pick n mix in Woolworths. She was rude about Nigel Farage ('odious'), but who isn't? When she did get into difficulty it was all her own doing, as when Etchingham brought up the rapist Isla Bryson. You might have thought it impossible for Sturgeon to make even more of a pig's ear out of this subject, but boy did she ever. Etchingham was looking at the former First Minister as if she was trying to argue that the Earth was flat. Personally, I turned the same shade as Sturgeon's jacket. Someone had to shoulder the embarrassment and it was not going to be our Nicola. There was some moistening around the eye area when she spoke of Alex Salmond's passing. She still misses him 'in some way' - a quote up there with Charles's 'whatever love means' - for half-baked sincerity. As for her new love life, her lips were sealed. 'I'm enjoying being my own person for a while,' she burbled, sounding for all the world like some Real Housewife of Montecito. Etchingham had a go at holding Sturgeon to account on domestic policy but nothing landed. She might as well have been on The One Show on BBC1, sandwiched between a soap star and an item on dodgy plumbers. The half hour running time and the 7pm slot told their own story. If there had been anything juicy the programme would have been on at 9pm, not just before Emmerdale. Upstaged by sheep. It shouldn't happen to a vet, or a former FM, but it did. The toe-curling was not quite over - there was still the matter of Nic's first tattoo. 'Midlife crisis alert,' she joked. You said it, dear. It was an infinity symbol she designed herself, something about strength and resilience and moving forward. In short, your basic woo-woo b******. Come to think of it, that would have been a better title for her book. Is it too late to change?
