Top Army officer says India can strike all of Pak: They'll need deep hole to hide
India possesses the military capability to strike targets across the entire depth of Pakistan, and if the Pakistan Army relocates its headquarters from Rawalpindi, it will need to find a very deep hole to hide, a top Indian Army officer asserted."The whole of Pakistan is within range," Lieutenant General Sumer Ivan D'Cunha, Director General of Army Air Defence, said in an interview with news agency ANI, as he highlighted the country's military capabilities.advertisement"India has an adequate arsenal of weapons to take on Pakistan right across its depth. So, from its broadest to its narrowest, wherever it is, the whole of Pakistan is within range... The GHQ (General Headquarters) can move from Rawalpindi to KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) or wherever they want to move, but they're all within range,' the Army officer said. In the recent military escalation between India and Pakistan, Indian forces targeted several Pakistani air bases, particularly along the border. However, the Defence Minister noted that the impact was felt deep into Rawalpindi, where the Pakistani Army's headquarters is located. The operation's success was attributed to the use of advanced indigenous technology, including long-range drones and precision-guided munitions.D'Cunha added that Pakistan had launched nearly 800 to 1000 drones across the western border over four days, and all drones carrying weapons were successfully intercepted and destroyed through coordinated efforts by the Army, Navy, and Air Force.advertisement'One thing for sure is that all the Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles [UCAV] which carried a payload, although they intended to harm our civilian population and they were directed towards population centres, we ensured that they did not cause any damage, and I think the proof of the pudding is actually in what we actually saw, that there were no civilian casualties,' the officer added.#WATCH | Delhi: When asked how many drones were sent by Pakistan during the recent conflict, DG Army Air Defence Lt Gen Sumer Ivan D'Cunha says, "...I would say anything between maybe 800 to 1000 across the whole western border in four days. A large number of them were destroyed. pic.twitter.com/S7YGs1X3ON— ANI (@ANI) May 19, 2025India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror camps in Pakistan, two weeks after Pakistan-based terrorists killed 26 people in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. In retaliation, the Pakistan Army attacked Indian border cities using drones and cross-border firing.India responded with precision strikes on multiple Pakistani military bases, compelling Islamabad to initiate ceasefire talks. Both countries reached an understanding to halt firing on May 10, and the ceasefire continues to hold.

House session starts with tributes to terror victims
1 2 Kolkata: Bengal assembly convened its two week-long monsoon session on Monday and offered condolences to victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack . As the House assembled, speaker Biman Banerjee condoled the deaths of 26 people. Obituary references were also made to the deaths of Bollywood actor Manoj Kumar, Tehatta MLA Tapas Saha and Kaliganj MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed. Everyone observed a one-minute silence. Full-fledged legislative business will commence on Tuesday with a resolution condemning the terror attack and hailing the armed forces. CM Mamata Banerjee is likely to participate in the two-hour discussion. Biman said while Parliament failed to acknowledge Operation Sindoor's significance, state assembly would formally express its gratitude towards the forces. However, the name 'Operation Sindoor' will not be directly referred to in the resolution, a TMC senior said. BJP has insisted on mentioning 'Operation Sindoor' in the discussion, its chief whip Shankar Ghosh said. On Monday, BJP protested the non-inclusion of names of two victims of Murshidabad riots in the condolence message. Later, around 30 BJP MLAs offered condolences to them. LOP Suvendu Adhikari has demanded a special session on Murshidabad. Taking a jibe at BJP, Biman said: "They are more comfortable expressing themselves before the media than participating in the House."

Army to get new air defence boost with Rs 30,000 crore QR-SAM deal
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry will soon take up the case for a preliminary nod to a Rs 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the new indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile (QR-SAM) systems for the Army. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council will consider granting acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the highly-mobile QR-SAM systems, which are designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at a range up to 25-30 km, later this month. The move comes soon after India's existing multi-layered air defence network played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor - the May 7-10 hostilities. The and the Army have over the last three-four years tested the QR-SAM systems against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate their capability under different day and night operational scenarios. Defence PSUs Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will co-produce the QR-SAM systems. "The QR-SAM systems can operate on the move with search and track capability and fire at short halts. They are tailor-made to move along with tanks and infantry combat vehicles to provide them air defence in the tactical battlefield," an official said. The Army Air Defence (AAD), which performed exceedingly well during Operation Sindoor, in fact, requires 11 regiments of the QR-SAM, even as it progressively also inducts regiments of the indigenous Akash system, which has an interception range of about 25-km at present. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The induction of the QR-SAM systems will add to the existing air defence network of the IAF and the Army, which ranges from the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf' surface-to-air missile systems (380 km interception range) and Barak-8 medium range SAM systems (70 km), jointly developed with Israel, to the Russian shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles (6 km), the upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and the indigenous integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (1km-2 km). While the DRDO is also readying the very short-range air defence missile systems (VSHORADS), which have a 6 km interception range, the real game-changer will be an air defence system with a 350 km range being developed under the ambitious Project Kusha. India plans to operationally deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029, with the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the AoN for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, as was first reported by TOI.
