IOA athlete commission takes important steps towards making athlete-centric environment

Indian Express4 days ago
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has moved towards getting substantial athletes representation in the governance of various sports. The IOA athlete commission held its meeting yesterday deliberating to create an athlete-centric enviornment in the apex sporting body of the Olympic movement.
One of the key decisions to come out of the meeting is the establishment of a dedicated within the IOA, which will be staffed with professionals committed to addressing athlete needs. This department will play a pivotal role in ensuring that athletes have a structured channel for feedback and support.
Another primary focus of the Commission was to ensure robust athlete representation in governance structure. To achieve this, each National Sports Federation will be requested to provide details of their Athletes Commission representatives. This will enable the IOA to establish a comprehensive framework for gathering feedback and insights from athletes across different sports disciplines and present the athletes' point of view through their official representatives.
One of the major problem areas in Indian sports is the transition of the athletes to normal life after their sporting career is over.
The IOA Commission proposed the development of an athlete career pathway that would provide opportunities in coaching, administration, and other fields beyond sports. To demonstrate its commitment, the IOA will hire two Olympian interns who will contribute to the initiatives and programs of the Athletes Commission. The financial framework for these initiatives was also a key point of discussion.
The IOA Commission acknowledged the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which provide $10,000 and $5,000 grants, respectively These funds will be instrumental in organizing a National Athletes Forum later this year, which will bring together representatives from each National Sports Federation to discuss athlete-centric issues and chart the future course of athlete engagement in India.

Shami's Test career in doubt? BCCI insider makes big claim about future: 'One needs to know if he is keen'

Mohammed Shami has not played Tests for India since the ICC World Test Championship final in June 2023. While there's no doubt over his quality, Shami's prolonged fitness issue could bring an early end to his Test career, a BCCI insider has suggested. read more Mohammed Shami's prolonged struggle with fitness could soon bring an end to his Test career unless the 34-year-old Bengal pacer manages to script a turnaround with his fitness and form, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insider has revealed. Shami last played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final and also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, enduring a poor outing. Yet, he failed to be a part of the Test squad in England. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD During the team selection press conference, chairman of BCCCI selectors, Ajit Agarkar, had said that Shami was not fit enough to play five Tests in England, hence they decided to look at other options. 'We'd rather pick guys fit and available rather than waiting,' Agarkar said. Shami is now looking to launch a comeback to the Indian team with the upcoming Duleep Trophy that starts on 28 August. The fast bowler has been named in the East Zone squad. Shami's Test future in limbo due to poor fitness Now, a BCCI insider has revealed to the Telegraph that the upcoming Duleep Trophy could prove to be much more than a cricket tournament for Shami. The pacer would have to use the East Zone matches to prove his fitness. 'If Shami comes up with an impact-making performance against North Zone, the selectors will certainly take notice because his quality cannot be ruled out,' a BCCI source said. 'But what we need to see is whether he'll play even if East Zone clear the quarter-final stage and continue to make progress. Will his body permit, given his dodgy knee and hamstring? 'In the Ranji game, he used to bowl three-four overs in a spell and go off the ground. So, whether his body can take the rigours of a multi-day game goes on and on to be a tricky question.' A good performance in the Duleep Trophy can also open the door to a Test comeback for Shami. India play a two-match Test series against West Indies at home in October, but the BCCI insider feels the selectors are keen on focussing on younger fast bowlers as Shami continues to face fitness issues. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Yes, how Shami fares in this Duleep Trophy will present a clearer picture of the prospects of his Test comeback. But one also needs to know if Shami himself is keen on making a comeback in the longest format,' the Board official said. 'First of all, he wasn't dropped because of form. Fitness issues are the only reason why he couldn't travel to England. 'After missing the last tour of Australia, his presence was pretty much needed for the England series. The selectors had also spoken to him before finalising the squad, but he didn't sound too confident. That much-needed assurance from him was missing. 'Besides, age is not on Shami's side. The preference, thus, will be someone who still has seven-eight years of cricket left in him rather than an individual who'll be turning 35 soon,' the official added.

Aakash Chopra says Rohit, Virat retired from 'wrong format', feels they should have quit ODIs instead of Tests

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): Amidst the media reports of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from ODIs soon, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that the Indian heavyweights retired from the wrong format and should have chosen to quit the 50-over format instead of Test cricket due to lack of ODI cricket happening in the present times. Days after skipper Shubman Gill led India to a brilliant 2-2 draw, reports started emerging that Rohit and Virat could be leaving ODIs as well, with both of them not in plans for the ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Namibia scheduled for 2027 unless both play domestic 50-over cricket to prove their match fitness and form. Both cricketers had announced Test retirement ahead of India's tour to England back in May. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "The truth is that they have said goodbye to the wrong format. They had left T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup, but the story might have been different had they continued to play Tests and said goodbye to ODIs. India played only six ODIs in 12 months before the Champions Trophy." "There is a possibility that you might play only six Tests in a year, but even if it is only six Tests, it's 30 days of cricket. If only six ODIs are played, it's just six days of cricket over a period of time. It will be more than 100 days from your last IPL match to the next ODI you will play. You are not playing at all. You are not practicing at all," he added. Chopra also pointed out that the gaps between ODI series these days are also "incredibly huge" and it would be difficult to sustain form, fitness, commitment to diet etc with just a few ODI games. "A three-match series gets over in seven to eight days. Then the next one would be after three months. Gaps are just incredibly huge, and you won't play first-class cricket in between. It's true that had they continued playing Test cricket and left ODIs, staying in the groove would have been a lot easier," he said. "When you have retired from Tests, and ODI cricket is not played much, it is not going to make a lot of sense. So just two months of high-intensity IPL, where you would get to play 14 to 16 innings, and then you would play three matches after six months, and then three matches after another three months. I think it is very, very difficult," Chopra observed. Virat and Rohit are two of the finest ODI players produced by India, with Virat having made 14,181 runs in 302 matches and 290 innings at an average of 57.88, with 51 centuries and 74 fifties. His best score is 183. On the other hand, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs in 272 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76, with 32 centuries and 59 fifties and a best score of 264. Both last played ODIs in the ICC Champions Trophy, which they won, with Virat scoring 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, with a century against Pakistan and a knock of 84 against Australia in the semifinals being his top contributions. Rohit had a more mixed tournament but nonetheless came in clutch with a title-sealing 76 in the final, ending the tournament with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00. The legendary duo has sustained a sensational run of form since 2023, the World Cup year. Virat has scored 1,710 runs in 37 matches and 34 innings at an average of 61.07, while striking at above 95, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His best score is 166*. In 38 ODIs and 37 innings, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs at an average of 48.97, with a stupendous strike rate of 117.24, with three centuries and 12 fifties, with his best score being 131. Their next ODI assignment will be three matches against Australia, starting from October 19 onwards. With three more ODIs scheduled from November to December against South Africa at home, three against New Zealand in January at home, and a summer tour to England for three ODIs in July, fans would be hoping that Rohit and Virat make the most of these outings with their consistency and reflexes to keep their chances of going to the World Cup alive. Rajasthan Royals officially break silence with a cryptic message after Sanju Samson exit rumours gain full steam

Sanju Samson's 11-year-long association with the Rajasthan Royals could be coming to an end. Social media is abuzz after news first broke out that Samson wants to part ways with RR, after being the face of the franchise. What, when, why, where and how is not known to the public yet. But as every good thing comes to an end, Samson's time with the franchise is believed to have run its course. Neither party – Samson nor RR – have gone on record to say anything about this latest development of theirs, despite Ravichandran Ashwin's best efforts. When the former Indian spinner asked him the million-dollar question, Samson casually laughed it off. But if there's one thing such rumours have taught us, it is that in nine out of the 10 cases, it's true. Samson's case could have been a rare 10th, but he chose not to prove he is most likely on his way out. Will he? Won't he? The Sanju Samson-Rajasthan Royals situation has more suspense than a Hollywood thriller.(PTI) Having said that, Samson acknowledged the role RR has played in his life and career. Samson was a teenager when he came to the Rajasthan Royals training camp and left Rahul Dravid speechless. After all these years, Samson and RR have gone hand in hand through all the ups and downs. They came close to winning the IPL trophy in 2022 but lost to the Gujarat Titans in the final. Still, amid this roller-coaster of a ride, Samson said that the Rajasthan Royals meant the world to him, adding a fresh twist to the rumoured exit saga. And now, wait until you hear this. The Rajasthan Royals have finally reacted to Samson's comment, breaking their silence on the matter officially. RR's X handle shared a social media card quoting Samson's remark and adding a heart emoji to it. This, honestly, could mean anything. But going by the vibe of the post and the reactions that have come with it, it does feel more like a farewell gesture than a 'let's keep it going' thing. Samson added that he will forever be indebted to Dravid and RR owner Manoj Badale for giving him the platform from which he could soar high. As for why Samson is possibly done with the franchise, it could be anything or many things. Some believe the rise of Vaibhav Suryavanshi has something to do with it, or that the franchise is grooming Riyan Parag to be their next captain. Sanju Samson's time with Rajasthan Royals Since 2013, Samson has represented RR in 149 IPL matches, scoring 4027 runs at an average of 31.70 and a strike-rate of 141.24, with three centuries. He is RR's most successful captain, having led the team to 33 wins since taking over from Dravid. Last year, Samson enjoyed his best season with the Rajasthan Royals, plundering 531 runs at a solid average of 48.27. In his debut year, Samson won the Emerging Player of the Season award. He represented the Royals from 2013 to 2015 before switching to the Delhi Capitals for two years in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, he returned to RR and has been with the franchise since.
