OPERATION VALA UMGODI: 43 illegal immigrants arrested so far
The first group of 13 suspects was arrested at Ledig village near Sun City on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, when they were found with no legal documentation.
Two of the suspects, who are South African, were granted a R1500 fine for employing illegal immigrants.
17 more illegal immigrants between the ages of 18 and 42 were arrested in Bojating village near Mogwase on Thursday, 1 May 2025.
The third batch, a total of 13 males between the ages of 20 and 47, was arrested in Geelhout Park in Tlhabane and in Extension 9, Boitekong on Friday, 2 May 2025 for being illegal immigrants.
One illegal immigrant faced additional charges for owning a dangerous weapon, while two other males were arrested for possessing drugs.
From the entire operation, police seized a generator, battery, shovel and a variety of drugs, including cocaine and dagga.
Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, expressed that the high number of illegal foreigners arrested each week is a cry for concern.
He said, 'It is deeply concerning that almost every week the police in the province are arresting large numbers of foreign nationals for not only being in the country illegally, but also for a variety of crimes such as dealing in drugs, illegal possession of drugs, unlicensed firearms, illegal mining, murders, robberies, theft of livestock and a raft of serious crimes, which threaten the territorial integrity, personal safety, the economy and undermines the authority of the state.'
Asaneng adds that the involvement of illegal foreigners in crimes poses a serious threat to national security.
'The involvement of foreign nationals in the commission of crime, whether aided or abetted by South Africans, poses a serious threat to national security and as such requires a collaborative effort by civil society and various government's security and social departments such as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Border Management Authority, Customs/ South African Revenue Services (SARS), Home Affairs Immigration, Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA),' said Asaneng.

Lawyers for deadly Boksburg tanker explosion file R65million lawsuit
Nearly two years after the deadly Boksburg tanker explosion, justice is now being sought in court. LHL Attorneys Inc. has filed a R65 million claim on behalf of 67 victims of the December 24 2022, tragedy, a catastrophic event that shook the local community and left a permanent mark on the families affected. The devastating blast claimed 41 lives, injured more than 100 people, and destroyed homes and businesses in the area. The tragedy occurred when a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, unable to clear a low railway bridge, became wedged and exploded in a fireball near Tambo Memorial Hospital. The force of the explosion partially destroyed the bridge and sent shockwaves through the surrounding residential area, leaving a scene of destruction and grief. LHL Attorneys Inc. has launched legal proceedings in the Johannesburg High Court on behalf of the victims, seeking financial compensation for the devastating loss, injuries, and emotional trauma they suffered. The firm is targeting three parties it alleges were negligent, and it has vowed to restore dignity to those whose lives were forever changed by the disaster. 'LHL Attorneys has cited three defendants in the legal proceedings: Infinite Fleet Transport (Pty) Ltd, the company that owns the tanker; Innovative Staffing Solutions (Pty) Ltd, the labour broker responsible for the driver; and the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality,' the firm said. According to the lawsuit, Infinite Fleet Transport failed to implement proper monitoring systems that could have guided the tanker driver along a safer alternative route, preventing the vehicle from entering the residential area and attempting to pass under a low railway bridge. Innovative Staffing Solutions is accused of neglecting its duty to ensure the driver was properly trained to transport hazardous materials. The City of Ekurhuleni Municipality is implicated for its alleged failure to provide adequate road signage and poor emergency response, including not evacuating residents before the fire and explosion. Gabrielle Berkowitz of LHL Attorneys described the explosion as a preventable catastrophe. 'This was not just an accident – it was a preventable catastrophe rooted in corporate and municipal negligence, striking at the core of a tight-knit South African community. Our mission is to obtain justice for the victims, to ensure that those responsible are held to account and to prevent future similar tragedies.' The law firm also explained that the claims have been carefully structured into four categories: Loss of Support, Injury, Property Damage, and Grief and Emotional Distress. This approach allows the court to consider the full scope of harm suffered by the victims, from financial loss to emotional suffering. To ensure that justice is accessible to all victims, LHL Attorneys said it will be handling the case on a contingency basis, also known as a 'no win, no fee' arrangement. This means that the victims will not be required to pay legal fees upfront, allowing them to pursue justice regardless of their financial situation. Foskor executive remains suspended after firearm threats in boardroom charges withdrawn

Image: Supplied Suspended vice president for human capital and corporate affairs at Foskor, Vincent Matlala, has alleged that criminal charges laid against him earlier this year for pointing a firearm at a colleague had been concocted by a disgruntled subordinate at the State-Owned Entity. Matlala's assertions come in the wake of the charges being withdrawn last month at the Midrand Magistrate Court late last month. Speaking to Business Report this week, Matlala, said he had lodged a disciplinary and misconduct grievance against a colleague for processing inappropriate payments to employees who were ineligible for such benefits, including dubious travel claims and other serious allegations of misconduct. "The SAPS investigated the matter, resulting in court proceedings where the charges made against me were withdrawn as such charges were baseless and unfounded," he said. "The employer also subjected these allegations to an independent forensic firm, where I was cleared of allegations made. I was relieved of my duties pending these investigations, and I cooperated fully with the investigators." Foskor group manager corporate affairs, Vhontsia Ramashia, said Matlala remains on suspension pending an internal disciplinary process into allegations of misconduct. "This process is entirely separate from any criminal proceedings, which fall outside the company jurisdiction. This is being addressed strictly in accordance with company policy and the highest standards of corporate governance. No further comments will be provided," Ramashia said. As Matlala waits for the outcome of the internal review, he is adamant about correcting what he perceives as a smear campaign against him, rooted in his attempts to address misconduct within the enterprise. According to Matlala, he lodged disciplinary and misconduct allegations against a payroll manager for a variety of financial misconduct allegations. "I invoked disciplinary steps against him for serious misconduct, including processing material undue payments to certain employees; dishonest travel claim for himself; and other allegations," Matlala said. "He rebelled against these disciplinary steps by lodging unfounded allegations of misconduct against me with the employer, as well as with the SAPS." BUSINESS REPORT
