'Rescued' CASC Bar reopens as Whisky Situation Aberdeen

'Rescued' CASC Bar reopens as Whisky Situation Aberdeen

A new Aberdeen bar serving more than 700 different bottles of whisky is opening today, at the venue previously known as CASC Bar.
Whisky Situation Aberdeen, the brainchild of 37-year-old Carlos Yabrudy, promises an exclusive whisky offering, as well as cigars, beer, wine and cocktails.
The new owners of the the Stirling Street bar, opening on Friday at 5pm, hope it will become a tourist destination in Aberdeen.
'We want to eventually become the best whisky bar in Scotland,' Carlos says.
'We want people to say: 'when you go to Scotland, that's where you need to go'.
'That's the goal.'
CASC Bar closed its doors back in December 2024 after 11 years on the Aberdeen food and drink scene.
Carlos – who founded retail company Whisky Situation back in 2023 – has retained several members of staff in his bid to 'rescue' the city centre venue.
He adds: 'I found out about this place, and when things were on the rocks I met the old manager and decided to rescue the place. And in doing so, saved three jobs and brought in three more staff members on top of that.
'For a lot of locals, this place was their second home.
'Hence there was a lot of sadness in the closing.'
Carlos believes that his new bar – and its sister whisky shop on King Street – could help improve Aberdeen city centre.
He says: 'Aberdeen is always playing third fiddle to Glasgow and Edinburgh, isn't it?
'Aberdeen has a lot here – Tall Ships and a lot of festivals.
'It's a city that works more like a town, where people talk more than other places. It's not so disconnected.
'Aberdeen is the closest to distilleries, on the cusp of Speyside – close to Macallan and Tomatin.
'People should be coming here from all over the world.
'Now there is an even better reason for them to come to the city centre. And hopefully start driving the city's regeneration.'
The new bar will host private events including weekly tastings from distilleries like Tomatin and Lochlea.
The range of whisky on offer is exclusive, says Carlos, with many bottles unavailable elsewhere in the UK.
'The main draw is having over 700 whiskies for people to try,' adds Carlos.
'We can give people the opportunity to try different things.
'A lot of this isn't available to taste before people buy it. So this will be a hub for people to try the newest GlenAllachie or Lochlea.'
Unique bottles available to sample include Brother's Bond straight bourbon whiskey from actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, and Japanese whiskey from Yamazaki Distillery.
Also boasting the 'largest humidor in Scotland', the bar offers a range of cigars.
Drams will range from £4.50 to over £100 at Whisky Situation Aberdeen.
'We can open a bottle that costs £200 per dram, it depends what people ask for,' he adds.
'I'm a very flexible guy. It's not a problem.'
Bottles like the single cask Glenfarclas Family Cask range might be more pricy for a dram.
Carlos adds: 'You're looking at £8,000 per bottle.
'So if you divide them up, that's about £200-300 per single [dram].'
The team are looking forward to opening the new bar and King Street shop this evening.
Carlos says: 'I'm excited to have everyone down.
'It feels like your family coming to see you again when you haven't seen them for a long time.
'The atmosphere won't be clinical – or like a dank student bar – but rather a familiar place.'
There are plans for refurbishment further down the line to turn the bar into a 'speakeasy style' venue.
The new King Street whisky shop will be open Tuesday to Saturday.
The Stirling Street bar will be open daily 3pm to 12am Sunday-Thursday, and till 1am Friday and Saturday.

Lochlea reveals first sherry and peat combination with Cask Strength Batch 3

This year's release is a first in flavour profile for the independently owned distillery in Ayrshire Award winning farm-to-cask Lochlea Distillery has unveiled Cask Strength Batch 3 – the latest release in its annual series of limited-edition cask strength bottlings – and a first in flavour profile for the independently owned distillery. This year's release marks a bold evolution in Lochlea's Cask Strength series, combining rich Oloroso sherry with distinctive Islay peat - a pairing never before explored by the distillery. ‌ It also represents a significant milestone for Lochlea's Master Blender Jill Boyd, who joined the distillery in late 2024 and has led the selection and blending of Cask Strength Batch 3 from start to finish. ‌ Jill carefully selected whisky that has been matured in a combination of Oloroso Sherry Butts and Ex-Islay peated casks, creating a final spirit that balances richness and depth with a surprising twist of smoke. Cask Strength Batch 3 delivers a captivating nose of ripe red fruits and savoury BBQ smoke, followed by a rich palate of cherries and dark molasses lifted by warming ginger cake, toasted rye and charred wood smoke. The long, layered finish lingers with baking spice, salty smoke, and oaky tannins intertwining with delicate floral notes of red roses to create a bold new take on Lochlea's signature style. Each batch of Lochlea's Cask Strength whiskies are carefully blended and bottled without any dilution, so every sip is just like trying samples from the warehouse itself. This latest release follows Cask Strength Batch 2 released last summer that had been matured in a combination of PX, Oloroso and STR casks showcasing a depth and complexity. The inaugural Cask Strength expression in 2023 was a combination of spirit matured in first-fill Bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry casks, working particularly well at high strength to amplify the fruit, nut and cereal flavours that form Lochlea's house spirit style. ‌ Jill commented: "I am especially proud of Cask Strength Batch 3 as it has been my first opportunity to curate one of our whiskies from concept to bottle, putting my own mark on our range. I wanted to push the boundaries of our house style with something bold and different. "As many whisky lovers will know, sherry and peat are both hugely popular flavour profiles, and we saw an opportunity to bring them together in a way that feels fresh and bold, yet rooted in our distillery's DNA. "It's complex, it's warming, and it's got a smoky twist making it the perfect dram to enjoy with a BBQ in the sunshine!" Cask Strength Batch 3 will be available from Lochlea stockists from May 29 onwards .It has been bottled at 59.8 per cent and has an RRP of £67.

Japanese rover smashes into moon in fresh disaster for embattled space company

Japanese company ispace has declared a second failure in a bid for its lunar lander to touchdown on the moon after communication was lost less than two minutes before the scheduled grounding A lunar lander from a Japanese company crashed while attempting a touchdown on the moon in the latest casualty in the commercial rush to the moon and the second failure for the same company. The Tokyo-based company ispace declared the mission a failure several hours after communication was lost with the lander. Flight controllers scrambled to gain contact, but were met with only silence and said they were concluding the mission. Communications ceased less than two minutes before the spacecraft's scheduled landing on the moon with a mini rover. Until then, the descent from lunar orbit seemed to be going well. ‌ ‌ CEO and founder Takeshi Hakamada apologized to everyone who contributed to the mission, the second lunar strikeout for ispace. Two years ago, the company's first moonshot ended in a crash landing, giving rise to the name 'Resilience' for its successor lander. Resilience carried a rover with a shovel to gather lunar dirt as well as a Swedish artist's toy-size red house for placement on the moon's dusty surface. Company officials said it was too soon to know whether the same problem doomed both missions. This is the second time that we were not able to land. So we really have to take it very seriously,' Hakamada told reporters. He stressed that the company would press ahead with more lunar missions. A preliminary analysis indicates the laser system for measuring the altitude did not work as planned, and the lander descended too fast, officials said. 'Based on these circumstances, it is currently assumed that the lander likely performed a hard landing on the lunar surface,' the company said in a written statement. Moon missions had previously been the preserve of governments but it became a target of private outfits in 2019, with more flops than wins along the way. Launched in January from Florida on a long, roundabout journey, Resilience entered lunar orbit last month. ‌ It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which reached the moon faster and became the first private entity to successfully land there in March. Another US company, Intuitive Machines, arrived at the moon a few days after Firefly. But the tall, spindly lander face-planted in a crater near the moon's south pole and was declared dead within hours. Resilience was targeting the top of the moon, a less treacherous place than the shadowy bottom. The ispace team chose a flat area with few boulders in Mare Frigoris or Sea of Cold, a long and narrow region full of craters and ancient lava flows that stretches across the near side's northern tier. ‌ Plans had called for the 7.5-feet Resilience to beam back pictures within hours and for the lander to lower the piggybacking rover onto the lunar surface this weekend. Made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic with four wheels, ispace's European-built rover — named Tenacious — sported a high-definition camera to scout out the area and a shovel to scoop up some lunar dirt for NASA. The rover, weighing just 5kgs, was going to stick close to the lander, going in circles at a speed of less than two centimetres per second. It was capable of venturing up to two-thirds of a mile from the lander and should be operational throughout the two-week mission, the period of daylight. Besides science and tech experiments, there was an artistic touch. The rover held a tiny, Swedish-style red cottage with white trim and a green door, dubbed the Moonhouse by creator Mikael Genberg, for placement on the lunar surface. ‌ Minutes before the attempted landing, Hakamada assured everyone that ispace had learned from its first failed mission. 'Engineers did everything they possibly could' to ensure success this time, he said. He considered the latest moonshot 'merely a steppingstone' to its bigger lander launching by 2027 with NASA involvement. Ispace, like other businesses, does not have 'infinite funds' and cannot afford repeated failures, Jeremy Fix, chief engineer for ispace's US subsidiary, said at a conference last month. While not divulging the cost of the current mission, company officials said it's less than the first one which exceeded £74million. Two other US companies are aiming for moon landings by year's end: Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Astrobotic Technology. Astrobotic's first lunar lander missed the moon altogether in 2024 and came crashing back through Earth's atmosphere. For decades, governments competed to get to the moon. Only five countries have pulled off successful robotic lunar landings: Russia, the US, China, India and Japan. Of those, only the US has landed people on the moon: 12 NASA astronauts from 1969 through 1972. NASA expects to send four astronauts around the moon next year. That would be followed a year or more later by the first lunar landing by a crew in more than a half-century, with SpaceX's Starship providing the lift from lunar orbit all the way down to the surface. China also has moon landing plans for its own astronauts by 2030.
