Diamondbacks savor the 'magical moment' of their 7-run rally in the 9th to stun Braves
ATLANTA (AP) — Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo's thoughts drifted to a different level of baseball as he watched Arizona put together a shocking, seven-run rally in the ninth inning to beat the Atlanta Braves 11-10 on Thursday.
'I was like a proud dad, right? Just watching a bunch of Little Leaguers go out there and have some fun and get the job done,' he said. 'That's what I can honestly say I felt in the dugout.'
Third baseman Eugenio Suárez completed the D-backs' comeback, lacing a two-out, two-run double to left field against struggling Braves closer Raisel Iglesias that made it 11-10. Arizona entered the inning trailing 10-4, and when the Braves went ahead by that score in the eighth, ESPN put Atlanta's win probability at 99.9%.
The Diamondbacks swept the three-game series and won their fourth straight overall.
'You have 27 outs, you have to play 27 outs hard,' Suárez said. 'I mean, that ninth inning tells how we play this game today. We're never gonna give up.'
Suárez began the inning by striking out against Scott Blewett. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with a homer, Tim Tawa walked and Alek Thomas also homered to cut the lead to 10-7. When Jose Herrera also walked — prompting Braves manager Brian Snitker to yank Blewett and bring in Iglesias — Suárez felt like he might get another opportunity.
'That was when I say, 'OK, we might have a chance over here,'' he said. 'Because we got Corbin (Carroll), we got (Ketel) Martin and (Geraldo) Perdomo behind him. And I know they've had really good at-bats. ... And I was right.'
Carroll doubled off Iglesias, who has given up a run in eight of his last 11 appearances, and Marte followed with a run-scoring infield single. Perdomo popped up for the second out, but Ildemaro Vargas extended the game with an RBI single that cut the lead to 10-9, bringing up Suárez.
'All of a sudden, you've got Geno, one of our top run producers, in the box with with tying run on base, and he comes through,' Lovullo said. 'So it was a magical moment for this team.'
After losing 9 of 10 in late May, the Diamondbacks entered June with a 27-31 record. Thursday's rally put them back at .500 — still disappointing for a team with playoff aspirations. But Arizona has reason for optimism.
'It's really cool, just to see how much work and time we put in, in the cage and on the on the field, and for it to show up when it matters is really special,' Thomas said. 'And it just shows how much we care and how much we want to win.'

Shohei Ohtani notches 6 strikeouts in 3 simulated innings against live batters as he ramps up return to mound
Shohei Ohtani was back on the mound on Tuesday as he ramps up his return to pitching in an actual MLB game. By most accounts he looked pretty good. Ohtani pitched three simulated innings against live minor league batters at Petco Park Tuesday afternoon prior to the NL West tilt between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. Advertisement Per and The Athletic, Ohtani threw 44 pitches. Per The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya, Ohtani allowed one hit and one walk and threw a wild pitch. He recorded six of his nine outs via strikeout. Here's video of a swinging strike to record the final out of his session: Again, the effort was against minor league batters during batting practice. But it's another encouraging sign for the Dodgers and their fans eager to see the two-way superstar pitch in Dodger blue for the first time. Tuesday's simulated innings were Ohtani's first on the mound since a May 31 session that went two innings. It was his third time overall throwing a live batting practice session and the first time he's exceeded two innings. Advertisement Ohtani's pitching work was previously limited to bullpen sessions that didn't involve batters. So when will Ohtani actually pitch? There were no immediate updates from the Dodgers after Ohtani's session on Tuesday. Roberts previously said after Ohtani's May 31 session that he'll need to reach "five or six" simulated innings before the Dodgers consider putting him into an actual baseball game. Shohei Ohtani continues to progress on the mound, but a return timeline to pitching in an actual game remains unclear. (AP Photo/Joe Puetz) (ASSOCIATED PRESS) '[He] used his entire mix, take some hitters up, down and came out of it well, which is most important,' Roberts said on May 31. 'I think he wishes his command would have been a little bit better. But a really positive day for Shohei. Advertisement 'You still got to get to five or six innings, so we still got a ways to go. … I didn't ask what the velocity was, I would think a safe guess is somewhere in the mid 90s.' Ohtani hasn't pitched in a game since August 23, 2023, when he was a member of the Los Angeles Angels. He underwent surgery a month later for the second time to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018. Ohtani signed with the Dodgers the following offseason and earned his third MVP after a historic 50-50 season at the plate. The Dodgers went on to a World Series championship, Ohtani's first. Ohtani's off to another sensational start at the plate that includes an NL-best 23 home runs through Monday. But his return to the mound is still unclear as his absence approaches the two-year mark. Advertisement A 40-27 Dodgers team leading a tight race in the NL West could certainly use the pitching services of Ohtani, who's at an All-Star level at his best. But don't expect them to throw caution to the wind. They won't put Ohtani on the mound until they and their medical staff are fully convinced that he's ready. In the meantime, the Dodgers and their fans can take solace in Ohtani's quest for a fourth MVP at the plate.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen shows off new ring following marriage to actor Hailee Steinfeld
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen's broad grin was familiar. The wedding band on the quarterback's ring finger was brand new. As much as Allen hoped to talk about the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday, the newlywed couldn't escape questions about his headline-grabbing marriage to actor/singer Hailee Steinfeld in Southern California on May 31. 'We're back to football,' he said, before pointing to his ring finger. 'Got some hardware now. So, good to go.' Allen was otherwise short on details as part of his longstanding bid to maintain a semblance of privacy, even though pictures from the outdoor wedding were posted on social media mere minutes after the couple exchanged 'I do's.' There were pictures of Steinfeld wearing a strapless white gown walking down the aisle, the couple sharing a kiss, and Allen, in a black tuxedo, posing with friends and Bills teammates. It wasn't until being asked about what the past four months have meant to him — in which Allen was named NFL MVP in February, signed one of the league's richest contracts in March and got married in May — that Allen finally opened up. He called Steinfeld his best friend, and said she makes everything easier. 'That was the most important decision I'll make in my life and I made the right one,' Allen said. Western New York and the NFL have a new power couple, both of whom happen to be from California and began dating two years ago. There's the 29-year-old Allen, who in seven seasons has set most of the Bills scoring and passing records. His star has continued to rise while he has transformed the Bills into an AFC power, also building his profile through various national commercials. And then there's Steinfeld, 28, who first gained fame by earning an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role as Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers' 2010 remake of 'True Grit.' She has since enjoyed numerous starring roles, most recently in the movie 'Sinners,' while also branching out into music. Amid the buzz, Allen brought the focus back to football as Buffalo opened a three-day mandatory set of practices. The quarterback skipped the team's voluntary sessions last week. Aside from taking his familiar spot leading the offense on the field, Allen spent time after practice being filmed to measure his footwork and mechanics. It's something Allen does several times a year to ensure he's not picking up bad habits. 'Making sure we're staying on top of those things and if there's something that we need to tweak for the better, we are going to try to do it,' he said. The same could be said of Allen's unflinching approach to dealing with the spotlight. Coach Sean McDermott credits the quarterback for staying true to himself. 'What I've seen is this truly genuine, authentic person who, yes, is in the limelight, yes, is one of the top players in our league, and maybe the top player in the NFL,' McDermott said. 'But he is so authentic, so down-to-earth, so relatable. I think that's really the connection and the cool piece about Josh is because he is who he is.' And yes, McDermott was among those in attendance at the wedding. 'I was very grateful to be there, No. 1,' McDermott said. 'Two, it was what you would expect of a wedding. Just great to see, and two really special families coming together.' ___ AP NFL:
