
Why your morning commute takes longer in hot weather
Rather than storms that so often cause disruption to our railways, it is the hot and dry weather that is sparking issues.
Train operators are trying to deal with dried-out and shrunk clay soil on which its rail tracks sit, as the UK experiences one of the hottest summers it has ever seen.
This clay causes uneven tracks, making it necessary for train operators to slow down their trains for safety reasons.
Passengers have been urged to check their journeys, as the speed restrictions could mean delays and even cancellations due to timetable changes.
Here's some information about the changes and why they are necessary.
Which train operators are affected?
C2C is the latest operator which has had to amend its timetable from Monday in response to the track conditions, which it said have been affected by the driest spring in more than 50 years.
From Monday, customers have been urged to check their journeys in advance.
Simon Milburn, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said: 'We are really sorry for the disruption to passengers from the timetable alterations, but we need to keep everyone moving safely.
'Our teams are working together to keep running the best possible service for passengers, even with the significant challenges we face with clay soil following prolonged dry spells.'
South Western Railway has also been affected, explaining it had seen some of the driest conditions for around 200 years.
The clay soil embankments which support its tracks have dried out across long stretches of the route between Gillingham and Axminster.
Why does this happen?
Train operators have said the exceptionally dry spring and summer have sparked the issues across the network.
The UK had its fifth-hottest July on record, according to provisional Met Office figures. This followed the UK's driest spring since records began in 1836.
C2C, which operates between London and south Essex, said the clay soil underneath its lines had shrunk, causing the track to drop in places and become uneven.
South Western Railway said because track levels have been disturbed, their trains cannot travel safely at their normal speeds.
Last year Network Rail dropped 12,600 tonnes of ballast across the route to try to minimise the effects of clay shrinkage, but an exceptionally dry spring this year has meant that it hasn't been possible to eliminate track issues.
It said it would need to rain for a solid three months for a soil moisture deficit not to impact services this summer.
Network Rail said although this can happen across Britain, there are different soil types across the country, meaning soil moisture is a particular problem in southern England where there is a lot of clay in the ground.
How will journeys be affected?
C2C advised customers to check journey planners before they travel, as trains operate at slower speeds with journeys taking longer than usual.
It said this may mean trains run at slightly different times, with a small number of services each day to be altered to start or terminate early.
The alterations are expected to be in place for between two and three months.
South Western Railway said due to the speed restrictions between Gillingham and Axminster, an amended timetable is in place for services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids.
This means only one train is running every two hours rather than the usual one per hour.
It said train services between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction are also taking approximately 25 minutes longer than usual between Tisbury and Yeovil Junction.
It said the timetable changes will be in place until further notice.

Napoli's heroes took their trophy and their medals to the chic spot and manager Conte was even seen letting his hair down there. But what stands out the most about Naples is its raw passion for the game. Diego Maradona is almost a religion in himself - 515 babies were named after him in the seven years he spent at the club, and his influence still reverberates around the city's streets in graffiti, murals, and statues. The sky-blue colours of Napoli stretch as far as the eye can see and the feet can wander, with flags hanging down over narrow streets and street vendors selling knock-off merchandise. It's not just Maradona who is lionised - from recent years, the likes of Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne also have enduring legacies in the city's streets. As Victor Osimhen put it: 'Naples should be a country, I see the reason why lot of players spend many years there, because the love they show to their players is really massive and they love football.' Portugal prime minister insists ‘everything is ready' to return to F1 calendar
Portuguese prime minister Luis Montenegro has made it known his desire to see F1 return to the Algarve in 2027. The Algarve International Circuit last hosted an F1 grand prix in the Covid-impacted season of 2021, having returned to the calendar in 2020 in similar circumstances. However, amid new destinations such as Miami and Las Vegas being added to the schedule, Portugal fell off the list. Yet while the 2026 calendar has already been announced, Montengero is pushing for Portugal to return to the schedule in 2027. 'One of the circumstances that most contributes to promoting this region is major events," he said. 'We have secured the MotoGP, the world's premier motorcycling event, for 2025 and 2026. 'And I can tell you that we have everything ready to formalise the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve in 2027. 'These events require some financial effort on the part of the government, but they have a direct financial return and an indirect promotional return that are, quite frankly, well worth it.' However, it is a wide-ranging list of countries keen for a spot on the 24-race calendar. While Imola has not been included on next year's schedule, Madrid will be added to the list with a street circuit in the Spanish capital. Zandvoort, home to the Dutch Grand Prix, will drop off after next year's final event, while Barcelona's deal with F1 also comes to an end after next year. However, the likes of Thailand and South Korea are all keen on staging a race with a heap of bids from Africa too, with South Africa, Rwanda, Morocco and Nigeria all declaring an interest. F1 returns after the summer break next week with the Dutch Grand Prix (31 August).

Britain will be battered by wind and rain next week as Hurricane Erin blows across the Atlantic after 24C Bank Holiday weekend
Hurricane Erin is set to move across the Atlantic - bringing wind and rain to Britain at the start of next week following a sunny 24C Bank Holiday weekend, forecasters say. The major category 3 hurricane is currently 675 miles southwest of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 120mph, according to the US National Hurricane Center. The system is forecast to remain out in the ocean, then the remnants could be seen in the UK by late Sunday - bringing big waves to the country's east coast. The Met Office said there is a risk of rain developing and then the weather is expected to turn increasingly unsettled by the early to middle part of next week. Windy weather could be accompanied by heavy downpours, with forecasters monitoring it to decide whether to issue any rain warning nearer to the time. The wet conditions are set to end a period of dry weather for much of the country, with the UK on track for one of its hottest summers on record. Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: 'Any remnants of the hurricane aren't expected to have an impact on the UK until early next week. There's uncertainty how it will play out. From late on Sunday the uncertainty starts to kick in. 'There's a risk of some rain developing, a potential that then things will turn increasingly unsettled. 'It's likely becoming more unsettled early to middle part of next week. At this stage we can't be too firm on the details.' Mr Petagna said wet and windy weather is forecast, and the UK 'could well see some heavy rain'. He added: 'We may need some rainfall warnings further down the line, but it's too early to say.' In the lead-up to the weekend, inland and western areas will see sunny spells today, potentially reaching 25C, the Met Office said. Eastern coastal regions will remain cloudy, and light rain or drizzle will move south or south-west across northern and eastern Scotland, later reaching North East England. South West England will continue to see a chance of showers, some of which may be thundery. Tomorrow will bring dry weather to the UK and sunny spells will develop widely, with a very low risk of heavy and possibly thundery showers in the far south and south-west early in the day. Daytime temperatures will be near normal for most areas, although it will feel cool near some North Sea coasts. Thursday will begin cool note, especially in the northeast of Scotland, where light showers may persist. Elsewhere, dry and bright conditions will dominate. Temperatures will range from the mid-teens in the north to low 20s in southern regions. The evening will be noticeable cooler and possibly chilly by Friday morning. Friday will be a dry and pleasant day, with sunny spells lifting temperatures to around 24C in the sunniest locations. Into the bank holiday weekend, high pressure will continue to dominate, bringing settled and fine weather for Saturday and into Sunday with highs of 24C again. But weak areas of low pressure in the Atlantic may begin to encroach on western parts of the UK later in the weekend, potentially bringing showers. Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Stephen Kocher said: 'A key feature to watch in the coming days is Hurricane Erin, which is currently a category three storm to the east of the Bahamas. 'We are closely watching Erin's track, with the possibility of the UK feeling the effects of what would then be ex-hurricane Erin at some point next week, bringing an area of low pressure to the UK and more unsettled conditions. 'This is still a week away however, so there is lots of uncertainty in the forecast, but it is possible we could see some wet and windy weather for the last week of August. 'We'll be keeping a close eye on the movements of Hurricane Erin over the coming days and updating our forecasts accordingly.' It comes after the summer has been marked by persistent warm temperatures even outside the four heatwaves which have hit the country, with June and July both seeing well above-average conditions. With two weeks to go until the end of the meteorological summer, conditions could still shift. But the season's overall warmth and consistently above-average temperatures mean it could rank among the UK's warmest in records dating back to 1884. Provisional figures from the Met Office show that the UK's average temperature from June 1 to August 17 stands at 16.2C, some 1.6C above the average temperature.
