Ruben Amorim: Man Utd performances will get me sacked next season
An 'embarrassed' Ruben Amorim has claimed he will not survive at Manchester United next season unless there is a rapid uplift in results.
United slumped to their 17th defeat of a shocking Premier League campaign after an insipid 2-0 loss at home by West Ham on Sunday. They have not lost that many games in a league campaign since being relegated 51 years ago and Amorim says United will be looking for a new manager next season if their current form continues.
'I'm not talking about the players, I'm talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team,' said Amorim, who has won just six of his 25 league matches since replacing Erik ten Hag as manager in November.
'We need to change that and we need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave. Because we will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different persons. It's a big problem that we have here at the club. It's a decisive moment in the history of the club. We need to address that.
'It's a big problem because it's mentally. We are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United. We don't have that fear anymore and that is the most dangerous thing that a big club can have. That is the biggest problem in our club at the moment because we are losing the feeling we are a massive club.
'I think it's a concern. It's not the players fault. It's my fault, I'm responsible. If we cannot change that really fast we should give our place to different persons.'
United face Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday week in what is effectively a £100 million shoot-out for Champions League qualification between two clubs currently ranked 16th and 17th in the Premier League.
But Amorim has questioned whether returning to the Champions League would be the best thing for United given the scale of their problems.
'I don't know what is best - if it's playing in the Champions League or not,' he said. 'How is a manager of Manchester United supposed to feel in this position? Embarrassed and it's hard to accept.
'I think everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here. Everybody is thinking about the final. The final is not the issue in this moment in our club. We have bigger things to think about and we have to change a lot of things in the end of the season.
'To be honest with you, I'm not concerned about the final. It's by far the smallest problem in our club. We need to change something that is deeper than this.'
Amorim appeared to imply that his players have been picking and choosing which games to rouse themselves for and condemned a 'lack of urgency' across the board.
'In the Europa League, we don't play quite well but we have a little bit of that urgency,' he said. 'We cannot lose the games, we have to win them. We managed to find a way to win the games. If Athletic Bilbao has a sending-off, we take advantage of that. We are so focused.
'You see these games in the Premier League, sometimes we are not focused. We don't have that feeling that we need to win to go to the next stage, like we have in the Europa League. So it's something that is mentally in our team.
'I don't want to talk about specific players. It's a team thing. When it's a team thing, it's a manager thing. We will try to address that. It has to be with a lack of urgency to defend the box and to attack the box. We need to be more aggressive and we need to feel that it is the end of the world when we are not winning a game.'
United's misery against West Ham was compounded by a foot injury to Leny Yoro that forced the defender's substitution five minutes into the second half. Amorim said he was hopeful the problem is 'not too serious' but suggested it could be linked to the broken metatarsal Yoro suffered last summer that kept him out for four months.
'He had that problem at the beginning of the season,' he said. 'We hope it's not too serious. I don't want to say too much but maybe it's not a big deal.
'We have to assess Lenny in a better way tomorrow. He felt something but I think it could be a small thing.'

Revealed: Mohamed Salah Could Miss Six Crucial Liverpool Fixtures This Season
Mohamed Salah Set to Miss Key Liverpool Fixtures Due to Africa Cup of Nations Liverpool's preparations for the 2025–26 season may soon face a significant test, with Mohamed Salah expected to miss up to six matches should Egypt reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations. It is a familiar interruption for the Reds, and one that often leaves a visible impact. AFCON Timing Puts Pressure on Slot's Squad Depth The Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on 21 December, with the final scheduled for 18 January. During this period, Liverpool face a demanding run of fixtures in both the Premier League and domestic cups. If Egypt, one of the tournament favourites, progress deep into the competition, Salah's absence could stretch Arne Slot's squad significantly. Advertisement The timing is far from ideal. Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign at home to Bournemouth, as confirmed this week, and expectations are high after Slot's title-winning debut season. However, a month without their talismanic forward will require tactical reshuffling and possibly the emergence of a new attacking focal point. Six Premier League Games on Salah's Absence List Should Egypt go all the way, Salah would likely miss six league fixtures. The run begins with a visit from Tottenham Hotspur on 20 December, just a day before Egypt's opening AFCON match. From there, Liverpool's schedule becomes congested over the festive period. Salah could miss matches against Wolves (27 December), Leeds United (30 December), Fulham (3 January), and Arsenal (7 January), with the final potential absence being the Burnley clash on 17 January. That Arsenal fixture stands out, not just due to the quality of the opposition, but also because of what it could mean in the title race. Mikel Arteta's side finished second last season and are expected to challenge again. Mohamed Salah's Influence Remains Undeniable Salah was Liverpool's standout performer during the 2024–25 campaign. He not only topped the Premier League charts for both goals and assists, but once again defined what it means to be world class at Anfield. Advertisement 'The Egyptian King managed to turn his career around massively at Anfield,' reads one summary, a nod to his transformation from Chelsea castoff to Liverpool legend. It is a story of redemption, consistency, and elite output. His absence is always felt, particularly when Liverpool are navigating the demands of the winter schedule. It is not just about the goals. It is about the spaces he creates, the defenders he attracts, and the aura he brings to the front line. Who steps into that role is a question Arne Slot will need to answer quickly. Salah's Importance for Egypt Cannot Be Overstated For Salah himself, the Africa Cup of Nations is an opportunity for silverware that has thus far eluded him with Egypt. His international ambitions have always burned brightly, and national duty takes priority when the call comes. Advertisement For Liverpool, however, the club-versus-country tension is real. In a season where every point matters, especially with Arsenal, Manchester City, and perhaps even Newcastle lurking in the title conversation, any disruption to rhythm could have ramifications. Still, it could have been worse. The fixture list, while challenging, offers manageable opponents around the Arsenal game. And if Salah returns in full flight, the Reds could emerge from January still within touching distance of their targets.

Journalist hints at SEISMIC Liverpool transfer in the works
Liverpool have something else brewing Journalist Ben Jacobs claims Liverpool are still dreaming of Alexander Isak. The Newcastle United striker remains their ultimate target in this transfer window. But Newcastle don't have to sell. In fact, they're proving incredibly difficult to negotiate with after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Advertisement Liverpool essentially need to hope that Newcastle would prefer the cash they could get for Isak in order to upgrade their squad. If so, perhaps a deal could happen. Though even then, we're still talking about a transfer record deal. Something that could approach £150m.

Magic Johnson shades Celtics after historic $10 billion Lakers sale
Lakers legend Magic Johnson applauded the agreement to sell the organization to Dodgers owner Mark Walter for an astonishing $10 billion — and found a way to poke fun at the Celtics. The pending sale — reportedly the largest ever for a sports team — is set to end the Buss family's control of one of the NBA's marquee franchises. 'Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the @Lakers legacy and tradition of winning,' Johnson, who owns a minority stake in the Dodgers, wrote on X shortly after the agreement was reported. Advertisement Johnson then had some fun at the Celtics' expense, citing the March sale of the Boston franchise. 3 Magic Johnson and Jeanie Buss exchange a hug during the game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers on March 11, 2018. NBAE via Getty Images 'Just like I thought, when the Celtics sold for $6B, I knew the Lakers were worth $10B!' Johnson wrote. Johnson called Walter a 'business partner' and a 'friend' — as they are both in the Dodgers' ownership group — in the social media post before going on to extol the CEO and chairman of TWG Global's accolades. Advertisement 'Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand,' the Lakers' great wrote. 'The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!' Johnson added on a second post that Walter is 'driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way.' The Buss family has owned the Lakers since 1979, when Jerry Buss bought the franchise from Jack Kent Cooke in a $67.5 million deal, which also included the NHL Kings and the Los Angeles Forum, the two teams' home at the time. 'I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike – they are competitive people, l have big hearts, love to give back, and both prefer to be behind the scenes. This makes all the sense in the world. 'I am so so SO happy and excited for @Lakers fans all over the world!!
