The two brightest planets to the naked eye, Venus and Jupiter, will pass to within a degree of each other in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday, Aug. 12, as part of a 'planet parade' — mistakenly called a planetary alignment by some — in an August edition of what happened back in February. The current planet parade, which started around Aug. 10 and will continue through most of the month, features Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — though the latter two gas giant planets are too dim and distant to be seen with the naked eye.
On the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 12, Venu and Jupiter, shining at magnitudes -4.0 and -1.9, respectively, will appear to be 0.9 degrees from each other in what astronomers call an appulse or close conjunction.
The planet parade — and the conjunction — will be best seen about two or three hours before sunrise, with the planets' rise times depending on location.
The best advice is to find a location with an unobstructed eastern horizon and look to the east-northeast horizon. There is no need for binoculars or a telescope.
The Perseid meteor shower will peak overnight on Aug. 12/13, though the presence of a bright moon will likely lessen its up to 75 'shooting stars' per hour.
According to The Planetary Society, a planetary conjunction is when two or more planets appear close together from our perspective on Earth, such as the view of Venus and Jupiter. However, a planetary conjunction can also include the moon, so you may hear about a conjunction between the moon and Venus, or the moon and Jupiter. However, it's essential to recognize that a conjunction is a line-of-sight illusion, where objects appear to be close together in the sky. In reality, the planets and the moon are many millions of miles apart. What Is A Planet Parade?
Planet parades — though not an astronomical term — happen when several solar system planets appear close together in the sky from our point of view on Earth, according to the BBC Sky At Night. Again, it's an illusion, and inevitable at some point given that the planets orbit the sun from different distances, but on the same plane of the solar system — the ecliptic. Since Neptune and Uranus are very dim and impossible to see with the naked eye, only Saturn, Jupiter and Mars of the outer planets can be seen in the middle of the night. Venus and Mercury, which orbit close to the sun, can only ever be seen close to sunrise or sunset, which is why planet arcs always happen just before sunrise or just after sunset, when one or both of the inner planets are visible.
When you're outside looking for Venus and Saturn, you likely won't have a problem. After all, Venus and Saturn will be very bright. However, Mercury and Saturn are harder to discern from stars. The key thing to remember is that planets don't twinkle like stars — they shine with a steady light. That's because they have a much larger apparent size than stars, and because they're much closer. They have documented what appears to be a new type of supernova, as stellar explosions are known, that occurred when a massive star tried to swallow a black hole with which it had engaged in a lengthy pas de deux. The star, which was at least 10 times as massive as our sun, and the black hole, which had a similar mass, were gravitationally bound to one another in what is called a binary system. But as the distance separating them gradually narrowed, the black hole's immense gravitational pull appears to have distorted the star - stretching it out from its spherical shape - and siphoned off material before causing it to explode. "We caught a massive star locked in a fatal tango with a black hole," said astrophysicist Alexander Gagliano of the U.S. National Science Foundation's Institute for AI and Fundamental Interactions located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, lead author of the study published this week in the Astrophysical Journal. "After shedding mass for years in a death spiral with the black hole, the massive star met its finale by exploding. It released more energy in a second than the sun has across its entire lifetime," Gagliano added. The explosion occurred about 700 million light-years from Earth. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km). "The gravitational pulls of the two objects were actually similar because we think they had similar masses. But the star was much larger, so it was in the process of engulfing the black hole as the black hole pulled material off of it. The star was large but puffy, and the black hole was small but mighty. The black hole won out in the end," Gagliano said. The researchers are not certain of the exact mechanism that caused the supernova. "It's unclear if the distortion triggers an instability that drives the collapse of the star, and then the leftover stellar material gets rapidly eaten by the black hole, or if the black hole completely pulls the star apart before it goes supernova," said Harvard University astrophysicist and study co-author Ashley Villar. "The star has been pulled and morphed by the black hole in complex ways," Villar added. The binary system started out with two massive stars orbiting each other as cosmic companions. But one of the two stars reached the end of its natural life cycle and exploded in a supernova, and its core collapsed to form a black hole, an extraordinarily dense object with gravity so strong that not even light can escape. "This event reveals that some supernovae can be triggered by black hole companions, giving us new insights into how some stars end their lives," Villar said. Stars that are at least eight times as massive as the sun appear destined to end their lives with a supernova. Those with a mass at least 20 times that of the sun will form a black hole after the explosion. An artificial intelligence algorithm designed to scan for unusual explosions in the cosmos in real time first detected the beginnings of the explosion, providing an alert that enabled astronomers to carry out follow-up observations immediately. By the time the explosion was completed, it had been observed by numerous ground-based and space-based telescopes. "Our AI algorithm allowed us to launch a comprehensive observational study early enough to really see the full picture for the first time," Gagliano said. Observations of the star dating to four years before the supernova revealed bright emissions that the astronomers believe were caused when the black hole guzzled material sucked off the star. For instance, the star's outer hydrogen layer appears to have been ripped off, exposing the helium layer below. The researchers observed bright emissions in the explosion's aftermath as the black hole consumed leftover stellar debris. In the end, the black hole became more massive and more powerful. Systems grouping two or more companions are quite common. Some of these multiples have a black hole as one of the companions. "Our takeaway is that the fates of stars are incredibly impacted by their companion - or companions - in life. Did you miss the start of the planetary alignment last week? Well, don't worry, you'll still have a few more days to see it before the month is up. But this will be your last chance for the year. Usually, people can look up at the bright sky and spot at least one planet. Two or three planets are also commonly hanging out in the night sky, according to NASA. But what about when four, five, or even six planets are visible? Well, from Saturday, Aug. 16, to Wednesday, Aug. 20, six planets will be visible, according to Andrew Fazekas, the Communications Manager for Astronomers Without Borders. Stargazers hoping to see all of the planets will have "a very short window of time" to do so, Fazekas said. As Mercury will be more difficult to see the further we get to the end of August, and only a few of the planets will be visible with the naked eye. Here's what you should know about the planetary alignment, also known as the planetary parade or planet parade, and what you need to see it. Stargazers have another chance to view the planetary parade The planet parade, where all six planets are aligned, started on Aug. 10. They include Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. For those behind, Aug. 16 to Aug. 20 will become crucial to stargazers scared of missing out, according to Fazekas. From Aug. 19 and Aug. 20, the crescent moon will line up with Jupiter and Venus and be a "great guidepost" to help people spot the planets, Fazekas adds. The planetary parade will be visible around 45 minutes before sunset and the next one won't happen until Feb. 28, 2026, according to Starwalk. What will you be able to see? Six of the seven planets visible from Earth will be in the night sky if you're looking at the right time. "You can actually see all of them if you have, of course, binoculars and telescopes handy," said Fazekas. Fazekas asks would-be stargazers to be wary of what they see online, especially now, as content created by AI becomes more prominent. Fazekas is worried people are "expecting too much. Because when you're talking about planetary parade, people think, 'oh, I'm going to see all these planets all together. I can't believe I'm going to see all of these things.' And really, to the untrained eye, the planets... just look like bright stars." What is a planetary parade? When multiple planets are visible in the night sky, people refer to it as a planetary alignment or parade, according to Fazekas and NASA. They can create an optical illusion that looks like there is a straight line. True planetary alignment is "virtually impossible." "The term planetary parade is a colloquial term. It's not an official astronomical one," said Fazekas. "It just simply means that the planets are visible in, generally, the same area of the sky." What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade? Certain planets will only be visible with binoculars or a small telescope. Those interested in purchasing equipment should steer clear of telescopes that cost less than $500 and opt for Celestron, Robert Lunsford, the American Meteor Society's newsletter editor and fireball report coordinator, told USA TODAY. He advises beginners to opt for a telescope with a lens instead of a mirror, and for those seeking a more affordable option, he recommends purchasing a pair of binoculars instead.
