Dalit business champ scheme: Orders on plea seeking CBI probe reserved
CHENNAI: The Madras HC's vacation bench of justices GR Swaminathan and V Lakshminarayanan on Friday reserved orders on a PIL petition filed by YouTuber 'Savukku' Shankar seeking a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in implementation of Annal Ambedkar Business Champion Scheme aimed at making SC/ST conservancy workers into entrepreneurs.
During the hearing, Additional AAG J Ravindran, representing the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, submitted that 213 eligible persons were selected adhering to eligibility criteria.
Questioning the maintainability of the plea and taking it up as urgent matter during vacation, he raised doubts about the bona fide intent behind filing the petition. He said it was filed out of political animosity as the petitioner himself had stated that the petition was a retaliatory measure to the vandalisation of his house.
The bench said it wouldn't see who is the petitioner but only the contents of the plea. It questioned why a group management company was not established as per the requirement of the scheme.
Representative of Gen Green Logistics, one of the parties impleaded, submitted that each member belonging to SC will be made a shareholder. Subsequently, the bench reserved the orders.

Ahmedabad: A special CBI court in Ahmedabad sentenced three men to five years of rigorous imprisonment for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and using forged documents to cause financial loss to United India Insurance Company Ltd (UIICL), stated a release from the central agency. They were sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a total fine of Rs 35.30 lakh on the trio. CBI registered the case on Dec 31, 2004, against the three convicts and 17 others for hatching a conspiracy that resulted in financial losses to the govt of about Rs 62 lakh through 10 fraudulent fire insurance claims. The accused allegedly filed identical claims stating their insured grass stock was destroyed in fire incidents. Investigation revealed that only one claim was found to be fraudulent. The false claim, worth Rs 8.97 lakh, was filed by Vasant Patel for a grass fire accident at Maroli in Valsad district. Apurva Patel conducted the survey and submitted a false report. The insurance payout was withdrawn through bearer cheques, which were signed by Vasant but written in the handwriting of Kiku Dhodi, who is also his brother-in-law. CBI found that the inspection and survey reports were fabricated. It filed a chargesheet on Dec 31, 2007, against five persons. After trial, the special court found sufficient evidence and convicted three accused.

Madras High Court says same-sex couples can form family without marriage

Cyberfrauds digitally arrest retired doctor & wife, extort Rs 1.95 crore
Patna: A retired doctor and his wife in the city were kept under digital arrest for 12 days by cyberfrauds, who impersonated as top law enforcement officials and extorted Rs 1.95 crore from them. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The couple, terrorised by continuous threats and fake courtroom visuals on video calls, transferred the money in multiple instalments over two weeks. The case came to light when the elderly couple grew suspicious and lodged a complaint with the Cyber police station in Patna on Wednesday. Confirming this, DSP Raghwendra Mani Tripathi, in charge of the cyber police station, said on Thursday, "The couple—Dr Radhe Mohan Prasad, a retired physician from the PMCH, and his wife Chhabi Prasad, who live in Hanuman Nagar—were under digital arrest since May 23. The cybercriminals posed as CBI officials, lawyers, and judges, and threatened them with violence. Out of fear, the couple visited their bank multiple times and made six RTGS transfers amounting to Rs 1.95 crore." Their ordeal began on May 21 when they received a phone call from an unknown number based in Mumbai. The caller claimed to be a CBI officer and informed them of a money laundering case registered against them at the Colaba police station in Mumbai. Saurabh Mohan, the couple's son, who also is a doctor, recounted, "My parents were at home when the call came. The man said he was from the CBI and claimed a money laundering case had been filed against both of them. Soon after, they started receiving video calls in which people dressed as police officers were visible." The fraudsters told Dr Prasad that a SIM card, issued in his name using his Aadhaar card, was linked to multiple money laundering cases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Within an hour of the first call, they began bombarding the couple with long video calls—some lasting up to 15 hours—where fake setups resembling police stations, CBI offices, and courtrooms were shown to create an atmosphere of intimidation, said the police. "The criminals maintained round-the-clock surveillance through video calls, cutting off their communication with the outside world," the DSP said. The elderly couple, overwhelmed by fear and unable to verify the claims, complied with the criminals' instructions without informing anyone else. The police have begun a probe into the case and have received three phone numbers used for the WhatsApp video calls. "We are analysing the call details and tracing the origin of the video setups," he said.
