From siu mei to snails, drinks brand co-founder's top Hong Kong restaurants
I am a typical Hongkonger, brought up eating siu mei (roast meats) on the street and dining in cha chaan tengs . I started to enjoy more fresh food with minimal seasoning after an exchange experience in Munich, Germany, where I found out tomatoes actually have a taste. Now I enjoy the art of turning mediocre ingredients into delicious dishes.
For a simple lunch, Chukfo Taipan Restaurant (Shop 3, 2-3 Triangle Street, Wan Chai. Tel: 2892 2789) has a good selection of barbecued meats with good soup.
Another good cha chaan teng lunch is Shun Hing Restaurant (5 Ormsby Street, Tai Hang. Tel: 2576 6577). They pioneered the velvety char siu and egg rice dish, with great balance in portion and flavour between the rice, egg and soy sauce. For dinner, Shunde Cuisine (6/F, Kwan Chart Tower, 6 Tonnochy Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 2347 7009) offers an authentic Shunde cuisine experience with classic dishes rarely found outside the district in Foshan, in southern China. For me, the braised pomelo skin is the most memorable. It is a nice place to go with family.
My all-time favourite comfort food is a huge bowl of lamb rice noodles with home-made spicy sauce and a lot of spring onion. I get that at Yunnan Old Friend Black Mountain Goat Rice Noodle Soup (two locations including 1/F, 90 Hung To Road, Kwun Tong. Tel: 3480 1908).

Ronaldo in Hong Kong: restaurants eye 30% business boost as Saudi Super Cup kicks off
Hong Kong's much-awaited hosting of the Saudi Super Cup, featuring football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, has brought thousands of fans to the city and may give a boost to restaurant operators, who are optimistic about an increase in business of up to 30 per cent. Fans have been following Ronaldo's every move since his arrival in the city on Thursday last week, as they try to catch a glimpse of him training or making a surprise visit to his CR7 Life Museum at the K11 Musea shopping centre. The football mega-event will kick off on Tuesday and run until Saturday at Hong Kong Stadium in Causeway Bay, with food and catering operators saying they expected to benefit. The operator of Yuga, a cha chaan teng near the stadium, said it expected business to increase by about 30 per cent if there was no rain on match day. 'The rain affects our business a lot, as many will go to restaurants closer to the MTR station when it rains,' said Christy Hung, manager of the Hong Kong-style cafe. 'We have arranged more manpower for the night [of the Saudi Super Cup], but business fluctuates a lot. We had arranged more staff for a previous match, but it rained and business got more quiet than usual.'

Inaugural 'AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest' presents aerial experience with panoramic views of the Victoria Harbour
[The content of this article has been produced by our advertising partner.] This September, Hong Kong will open its doors to a spectacle long cherished around the globe but never before seen here: the 'AIA International Hot Air Balloon Fest,' HABFest 2025. From September 4 to 7, the Central Harbourfront Event Space will transform into a living canvas of colour and light as giant balloons drift in from Canada, Germany, Britain, Japan and beyond. The city's inaugural tethered hot air balloon ride will finally take flight, overcoming the logistical and regulatory hurdles that once made such an event nearly impossible in our dense urban landscape. Colourful balloons will add sparkle to Victoria Harbour's iconic skyline. As dusk settles over the iconic harbour, majestic balloons will inflate in playful shapes—some soaring up to 20 metres tall, including a specially commissioned panda that pays homage to Hong Kong. Flanked by smaller balloons nearly as high as a six-storey building, this spectacular lineup promises a social-media-worthy skyline moment like no other. The public in Hong Kong have the chance to try out the city's first-ever balloon tethering experience. Tethered balloons will gently ascend 10 to 20 metres daily from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. (except on September 4) and from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Under the supervision of licensed professional pilots and secured by heavy-duty ropes, guests can enjoy this floating vantage point with friends or family, capturing unforgettable 360-degree views of Hong Kong's glittering skyline. Delivering this urban marvel demands professional precision. Expert teams will coordinate every element—from specialised rigging to real-time weather monitoring—ensuring each lift is as safe as it is sensational. Strict adherence to safety regulations and flawless technical execution make every moment aloft both exhilarating and secure. For Hong Kongers and visitors alike, this meticulously crafted experience will stand out as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to soar above the harbour without ever leaving the heart of the city. But HABFest 2025 is more than thrilling rides. Each evening, 'Music On Air' will transform the festival grounds into a world-class stage where local superstars and emerging pop sensations shine. Joey Yung, Serrini, Tyson Yoshi, Leo Ku, LMF, RubberBand, Gin Lee, ToNick and Kenny Kwan will deliver live performances pulsing with energy. As balloons glow from within during the 'Night Glow Show,' mesmerising visuals fuse with live soundtracks create a sensory feast that resonates long after the final note.

Hongkongers urged to avoid travel to Iran, Israel despite risk downgrade
Hong Kong has advised residents to avoid non-essential travel to Israel and Iran despite lowering the risk levels for visiting the two countries from black to red. 'The [Hong Kong] government advises Hong Kong residents who intend to visit Israel and Iran to adjust their travel plans and avoid non-essential travel,' the spokesman said. 'In view of the situation in Israel, Hong Kong residents should avoid all travel to Gaza and nearby areas, as well as areas along the border with Syria and Lebanon. 'As for Iran, Hong Kong residents should also avoid all travel to areas near the Isfahan, Qom, Markazi and Bushehr provinces,' the statement said. Advertisement Authorities also asked residents in the two countries to attend to 'personal safety and pay attention to announcements made by local authorities and the Chinese embassies there'.
