Malaysia's largest indoor vertical farm launched in Johor

The Star07-07-2025
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Digital agri-food company Farmbyte, part of the state-owned Johor Corporation, and a Singaporean agritech firm have launched the biggest indoor vertical farm in Malaysia.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the RM40mil joint venture is a collaboration under the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
'The project, formalised in April 2023, is a showcase of the strong and strategic partnership between Malaysia and Singapore in the area of food resilience.
'The collaboration between FarmByte and Singapore's Archisen marks a pioneering initiative under the JS-SEZ, and it will set an ecosystem to strengthen food security in both countries,' he said after launching the indoor farm here on Monday (July 7).
He added that the 4,830 sqm (52,000 sq ft) indoor farm was also a clear demonstration that agriculture today was no longer constrained by land, climate or seasonality alone.
'Through controlled-environment agriculture, smart systems and cutting-edge vertical farming technologies, we are proving that Johor's food production can be sustainable, resilient and scalable,' he said.
With an estimated annual output of 306,000 kg of fresh produce, the farm is a strategic asset supporting Malaysia's National Food Security Policy Action Plan and Singapore's '30 by 30' food resilience goal.

Seatrium first-half profit soars 301% on strong order book

Seatrium chief executive Chris Ong. — The Straits Times SINGAPORE: Seatrium's net profit for the first half of 2025 (1H25) swells on the back of a strong order book and higher margins, the company says in a filing on the Singapore Exchange yesterday. Profit for the six months ended June 30 was S$144mil, a 301% jump from S$36mil for 1H24. But underlying net profit, which excludes legal and corporate claims, rose 16% to S$133mil from S$115mil. No dividend was proposed for the period, the same as for the year-ago period. Seatrium's results come a day after the offshore and marine company announced the conclusion of the Singapore authorities' investigation into potential offences in Brazil. The Singapore-listed company was implicated in Operation Car Wash, a major corruption scandal in Brazil, which involved allegations of paying bribes to secure contracts. Seatrium on July 30 said it will pay financial penalties to the Brazilian and Singaporean authorities totalling S$241.7mil to settle the long-drawn corruption probe. As of the end of June, Seatrium's net order book stood at S$18.6bil, of which S$6.3bil are renewables and cleaner or green solutions. The order book comprises 25 projects with deliveries till 2031. Chief executive officer Chris Ong said, 'Our first-half financial results demonstrate the strength of Seatrium's disciplined execution, as well as the robustness and diversity of our order book.' He added that this healthy order book also continues to provide revenue visibility. 'Despite a volatile macro environment, rising global energy demand and an increased focus on energy security continue to shape industry priorities and underpin a sizeable pipeline for energy infrastructure assets,' he added. 'We remain confident in delivering long-term value to all our stakeholders by building a profitable and resilient business.' Seatrium said its gross margin rose to 7.4%, from 3.7% in 1H24, due to a favourable mix of higher-margin projects, operational efficiencies, and continued cost optimisation. Revenue for the first half grew 34%, reflecting the strong execution of its robust order book, it added. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) stood at S$407mil, up from S$311mil for the year-ago period. In its outlook, the company said it has a diversified portfolio of offshore oil and gas, offshore wind solutions, and maritime repairs and upgrades, which positions it favourably to capitalise on long-term energy demand growth. 'The group's multi-pronged strategy and proven execution have enhanced the resilience of its business at a time of ongoing geopolitical volatility,' Seatrium added. 'Looking ahead, Seatrium remains focused on achieving profitable growth by expanding its franchise of series-build projects, prioritising execution excellence, enhancing productivity, and driving cost efficiencies,' it said. It also noted that the group is making good progress towards its 2028 financial targets. These include growing its Ebitda to over S$1bil and achieving a return on equity of more than 8%. In February, Seatrium delivered its fourth floating production storage and offloading vessel project for Guyanese waters, off the coast of South America. — The Straits Times/ANN

JS-SEZ, RTS and Digital Push: Johor backs 13th MP as roadmap to future

JOHOR BARU: Johor welcomed the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a strategic and timely blueprint that aligns with its Maju Johor agenda and ambition to become a developed state by 2030. Johor Maju is the state's vision to achieve developed status by 2030 through inclusive, sustainable, and high-impact growth. It focuses on strengthening the economy, upgrading infrastructure, and improving the rakyat's quality of life. Key priorities include the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), digital transformation, and green development. State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said Johor recorded the highest gross domestic product (GDP) in the country with 6.4 per cent. "It proves Johor is on the right track, and 13MP will further fuel this "The 13MP supports Johor's vision through the recognition of JS-SEZ as a regional economic driver, and by streamlining cross-border investment via the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre Johor (IMFC-J)," he said in a statement today. Key infrastructure projects under 13MP include the Gemas–Johor Baru double-tracking, the Elevated ART (E-ART) system in Iskandar, and Senai Utara–Machap PLUS upgrades, all aimed at strengthening regional mobility and logistics. The RTS Link to Singapore was described as a "transformational project" that will ease border congestion, support daily commuter flows, and enhance Johor–Singapore economic integration. Lee also welcomed the planned expansion of Tanjung Pelepas port to boost maritime trade capacity and Malaysia's regional logistics standing. On social development, the inclusion of the Sultanah Aminah Hospital 2 will ease congestion in Johor's healthcare system and expand public access to medical services. The recognition of Johor as a host state for the Strategic Tourism Investment Zone (STIZ) was also welcomed. Lee said it will boost tourism growth in the run-up to Visit Johor Year 2026. Malaysia Fest Expo Serves As Gateway To Grow Local Product Market In Singapore

By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, July 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's agri-food exports to Singapore are expected to rise further beyond the nearly RM11 billion recorded last year, driven by increased participation of entrepreneurs in events such as Malaysia Fest 2025, which kicked off on Thursday. Malaysia's High Commissioner to Singapore, Datuk Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, said the expo—now in its eighth edition—provides an ideal platform for Malaysian entrepreneurs to expand their market reach in Singapore, with support from the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA). bootstrap slideshow 'The value of Malaysia's agri-food exports to Singapore grew from RM8.5 billion in 2022 to nearly RM11 billion in 2024. 'This reflects strong interest and high demand for Malaysian products in the Singaporean market, particularly in food, tropical fruits, and health-related items,' he said at the official opening of Malaysia Fest 2025 on Thursday. Azfar also noted that the hosting of Malaysia Fest holds special significance this year, coinciding with Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, and serves as a strategic platform to showcase the richness of local products, cultural heritage, and the country's unique tourism offerings on the international stage. Organised by MegaXpress International in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through FAMA, this year's expo features 321 booths—the highest in its history—with participation from 220 entrepreneurial companies. In addition to agri-food products, the expo also features tourism packages, cosmetics, and apparel. FAMA Chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the agency has observed increasing popularity of Malaysian exotic agri-food products among Singaporean consumers based on their participation in the expo.
