Scientists find temperate planet in nearby system full of rocky worlds

A tiny red star not far from Earth is turning out to be a heavyweight in the search for rocky worlds.
Nestled just 35 light-years away in space, the star L 98-59 is home to a tight-knit pack of exoplanets, including one that now appears to orbit at just the right distance to harbor liquid water.
Using data from NASA's TESS space telescope and a pair of high-precision instruments in Chile, scientists led by the Université de Montréal have confirmed a fifth planet in the system — and this one is in the so-called habitable zone. The team thinks it could receive as much warmth from its star as Earth does from the sun.
And it's not alone. The L 98-59 system already has a reputation for its wide variety of intriguing exoplanets.
"With its diversity of rocky worlds and range of planetary compositions, L 98-59 offers a unique laboratory to address some of the field's most pressing questions," said René Doyon, one of the study's researchers, in a statement. "What are super-Earths and sub-Neptunes made of? Do planets form differently around small stars? Can rocky planets around red dwarfs retain atmospheres over time?"
Red dwarf stars like L 98-59, sometimes referred to as M-type stars, are the most ubiquitous kind in the Milky Way, yet nobody knows whether planets closely orbiting them can hold onto atmospheres, Néstor Espinoza, a Space Telescope Science Institute researcher, previously told Mashable. Though these host stars aren't as hot as the sun, nearby worlds would be exposed to their extreme stellar radiation.
Most astronomers agree that detecting atmospheres in general is crucial in the search for habitable worlds. NASA has playfully called Earth's own atmosphere its "security blanket": Without it, the type of life flourishing here wouldn't exist. This cocoon holds oxygen in the air and filters out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, all while keeping the world warm. Furthermore, it creates pressure that allows liquid water to pool on the surface.
Espinoza is a leader in the new massive James Webb Space Telescope study of rocky worlds, specifically to find out if planets around red dwarfs could have air. The campaign, first reported by Mashable, will take a closer look at a dozen nearby-ish planets outside the solar system over the next two years.
One of the exoplanets in the L 98-59 system, located in the constellation Volans, has already gotten a first look from Webb. A separate research team revealed that L 98-59 d, a bit larger and heavier than Earth, could have a sulfur-rich atmosphere that reeks of burnt matches and rotten eggs. Agnibha Banerjee, one of the researchers, said the team will need more observations to confirm those findings.
"If these findings can be confirmed and turn out to be true, this planet won't be pleasant on human noses," Banerjee previously told Mashable. "Then again, if a human in the far future were to ever visit, the smell would be the least of their problems — in the midst of crushing pressure, boiling temperatures, and toxic gases."
The latest discovery by the Montreal team of a fifth planet, known as L 98-59 f — along with insights into its planetary neighbors — will be presented in a new paper accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal.
"These new results paint the most complete picture we've ever had of the fascinating L 98-59 system," said Charles Cadieux, first author of the paper, in a statement. "It's a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve by combining data from space telescopes and high-precision instruments on Earth, and it gives us key targets for future atmospheric studies with the James Webb Space Telescope."
To discover the planet, the scientists didn't need new telescope time. Instead, they used cutting-edge techniques to squeeze more juice out of existing data. For instance, L 98-59 f doesn't cross in front of its star from Earth's point of view, making it invisible to planet-hunting cameras. But researchers were able to detect it through subtle wobbles in the star's motion, caused by the tug of the unseen planet's gravity.
By combining and reanalyzing records, they also dramatically improved estimates of the other planets' sizes, weights, and orbits. One planet is smaller and lighter than Earth — a rare confirmed "sub-Earth" — while others show signs of being rich in water or heated by internal volcanic activity like Jupiter's moon Io, thanks to gravitational stretching.
Many planet hunters haven't been this optimistic about the search for habitable worlds since the tantalizing TRAPPIST-1 system.
"With these new results," said coauthor Alexandrine L'Heureux in a statement, "L 98-59 joins the select group of nearby, compact planetary systems that we hope to understand in greater detail over the coming years."

Amazon's Kuiper internet constellation will continue to grow thanks to yet another launch -- again on a SpaceX rocket. The mission is known as KF-02 (Kuiper Falcon 2) and is set to liftoff no earlier than 10:01 a.m. Thursday, August 7, from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. SpaceX has a 27-minute window to make the launch. As the name suggests, it is the second launch of the satellites atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX recently launched a batch of the satellites back on July 16. Amazon Kuiper SpaceX launch from Cape Canaveral Comparable to SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet, the Amazon Kuiper satellite internet service promises to provide internet in "unserved and underserved communities." Overall, this will be the fourth launch of the satellite constellation to date. Kuiper saw its first batch launched April 28 of this year atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. The SpaceX's Falcon 9 will deploy the satellites 289 miles above Earth, and then Amazon's Project Kuiper team will take over from an operations center in Redmond, Washington. From there, the Amazon team will raise the satellites to an altitude of approximately 391 miles. Amazon was founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, who also founded space company, Blue Origin. SpaceX and the Starlink satellites are products of billionaire Elon Musk. Eventually, the Amazon Kuiper satellites will eventually be launched atop Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket as well. Amazon plans to have 3,232 of the first-generation satellites in orbit within the coming years. In contrast, SpaceX has about 8,000 Starlink satellites in orbit. The Project Kuiper satellites are processed for launch at the new $140 million, 100,000-square-foot processing plant at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. When is the next Florida launch? This is a rare occasion, as SpaceX routinely pushes its fleet of boosters to well beyond 20 flights. Reusability keeps the costs down. There will be no Space Coast sonic booms, as the new booster will land out on the A Shortfall of Gravitas drone ship, which will be waiting in the Atlantic Ocean. Something important for a Florida facing a hotter future was sent into space this week with NASA astronauts aboard a SpaceX rocket: Seeds. The hope is that when they return to Earth, they will produce hardier, more resilient plants. With Florida's agricultural and wild lands under increasing pressure from climate change, some scientists believe that sending seeds into space potentially could help strengthen them for what's ahead back on Florida terra firma. 'We know that the plants can adapt, be more resilient and continue growing in space,' said Wagner Vendrame, a horticulture professor at the University of Florida. 'In translating that back to Earth, our summers are getting very hot or even hotter. If those plants can handle stresses like heat, drought and floods back on Earth, it could be a major accomplishment – and a real benefit for farmers.' The mission sent 'representative crops' from several countries, including Argentina, Nigeria, Brazil, Costa Rica and the U.S., to the International Space Station laboratory. While the seeds won't experience heat, drought or flooding in space, they will be exposed to zero gravity and cosmic radiation. Scientists hope these conditions could trigger DNA changes that make the plants more resilient back on Earth. There's another long-term goal, too: exploring if plant seeds can adapt to microgravity to survive in space for long-term missions to Mars or the moon. 'We're going to the Moon…to stay! After that, we go to Mars!,' said NASA Administrator Sean Duffy in an Aug. 1 press release. Among the Florida plants sent were rare native orchid seeds, such as the night-scented orchid, which grows only in hammocks and swamps, and the Jingle Bell orchid, closely related to the ghost orchid. Other Florida species included a strawberry variety and a type of biograss used for cattle feed. Vendrame, whose research focuses on orchids, said many of Florida's native species are endangered. 'Whenever there is a flood, drought, or hurricane in the Everglades, a lot of the species fall from the trees and die,' he said. 'It will be interesting to see how these native orchids respond.' This space-growing method has already shown success in China. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency and BBC reporting, seeds of one of China's most popular wheat varieties sent to space produced an 11% higher yield than standard varieties, with improved drought tolerance and stronger resistance to pests. Vendrame said he has sent plant cell cultures to space in the past, but this will be the first time sending up Florida seeds. 'This is a new venture,' he said. Once the seeds return to Earth, scientists will examine their appearance, extract DNA to study genetic changes and test their physiology. 'We can measure seed respiration and compare space-grown seeds to those grown on the ground,' Vendrame said. 'It's really exciting. We'll have a lot of work to do.' One of NASA's two previously stuck astronauts has retired from the space agency, less than five months after his unexpectedly long spaceflight came to an end. NASA announced Butch Wilmore's departure on Wednesday. Wilmore and Suni Williams launched last summer as test pilots on Boeing's first astronaut flight.
