HC asks Maha to decide plea seeking permission for Eid prayer
A vacation bench of justices Neela Gokhale and Manjusha Deshpande gave direction in response to a petition moved by Umer Abdul Jabbar Gopalani, challenging the local Gamdevi police decision refusing to grant permission, citing law and order and traffic congestion issues.
In his petition Goplani said the fire and traffic departments had granted an NOC whereas the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked it to get another NOC from the directorate of archaeology and museum; and thereafter it said it will consider the application.
He also argued that the namaz has been performed at the Maidan for over 50 years without any incidents and if the permission is granted to the petitioner, the petitioner will take all necessary precautions to avoid law and order situation.
The state government represented by public prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar objected and clarified that both agencies had only issued conditional clearances.
He also said that the police's decision was based partly on the refusal of permission in 2024.
However, the petitioner argued that no valid reason had been provided in last year's refusal and that precedent alone could not justify rejection in 2025.

Bombay High Court Okays Expert Panel On Pigeon Row, Halts Civic Body's Controlled Feeding Plan
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the formation of an expert committee to examine the pigeon-feeding controversy, while putting the brakes on the proposal of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to allow "controlled feeding" between 6 am and 8 am until public opinion is sought. A bench of Justices Girish Kulkarni and Arif Doctor was hearing petitions on the closure of a nearly a century-old Kabutarkhana in Dadar. Maharashtra Advocate General Birendra Saraf presented a proposed list of committee members, including health officers, town planners, immunologists, and microbiologists, in line with the court's earlier directions to prioritise public health and constitutional rights. The bench asked for more names to be added. Mr Saraf said the committee's first task would be to survey existing feeding points in public spaces and later recommend sites for controlled feeding without endangering public health. The court approved this and gave the panel a month from its first meeting to submit a report. In addition, BMC informed the court it was ready to permit feeding during a two-hour morning slot with certain conditions. The bench rebuked the civic body for shifting from its earlier stand without consulting stakeholders. "You earlier took a decision in the public interest. Now, because one person says something, you change it? If you want to revise an order, issue a notice and seek suggestions from all stakeholders, including the public," the court said. The judges directed that no controlled feeding could be allowed before assessing public health implications and inviting objections. The BMC clarified that no order had yet been passed and assured that suggestions would be sought first. A suggestion from the petitioner to use Mahalaxmi Racecourse as a feeding point was met with caution from the bench. The bench said, "It may set the wrong precedent that could lead to demands for feeding zones in every open space." The court directed that all stakeholders, including petitioners, can submit written suggestions to the newly formed committee, and that public views on controlled feeding should be collected within 5-10 days. The next hearing is scheduled after four weeks. Speaking outside court, senior advocate Harish Pandya, appearing for the petitioner, said, "We had requested morning and evening slots for feeding, but that was not granted. The court will now decide based on the committee's report. This is a setback, as we cannot feed pigeons for now."

E3 nations threaten to resume sanctions on Iran
Tehran, Aug 13 (UNI) France, Germany, and the UK, collectively known as the E3, have once again threatened Iran with the reimposition of the snapback UN sanctions, unless the country resumes negotiations, reports Iran International. In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council, the E3 foreign ministers reiterated their threats of reimposing international sanctions on Iran under the tenets of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, unless Tehran resumes talks or asks for a deadline extension. 'We have made it clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism,' the ministers wrote, according to Financial Times' report. The letter bears the signatures of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Germany's Johann Wadephul, and Britain's David Lammy, and comes two months post the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, following their 12-day war. The Iranian mission to the UN did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbass Araghchi had dismissed the threats, stating that the E3 nations lacked both the capability and the authority, to reimpose said sanctions. Nonetheless, Iran's Ministry of Intelligence has warned ministries and businesses to be prepared for the looming snapback sanctions which seem more and more likely. The leaked document by the Ministry cautioned that renewed sanctions would target arms sales, freeze overseas assets, and reimpose restrictions on industries such as oil, petrochemicals, banking, shipping, insurance and sensitive technologies. As a countering move, a senior Iranian lawmaker warned on Wednesday that the parliament could move to withdraw Iran from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if Western powers were to reimpose the UN sanctions. 'If the other side takes steps toward operationalizing the snapback mechanism and uses it, the Iranian parliament will definitely respond,' Manouchehr Mottaki, a member of parliament's economic committee, was quoted as saying by Iranian media. He said lawmakers were 'ready to pull the trigger' on an NPT exit, adding that the West had no legal grounds to restore sanctions under the 2015 nuclear deal and was using the threat only as leverage. 'If they make their threat a reality, in line with the guidance of the Supreme Leader, we will also make our threat a reality,' Mottaki said. UNI ANV
