CPO futures to trade with bearish bias next week on weak soybean, crude oil prices

KUALA LUMPUR: The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives is expected to trade with a bearish bias next week, weighed down by persistent weakness in the soybean oil and crude oil markets.
Palm oil trader David Ng said the recent downtrend in soybean oil and crude oil prices is likely to limit gains in the CPO market, as these external markets heavily influence palm oil sentiment.
"Soybean oil and palm oil compete in the global vegetable oil market, and when soybean oil prices decline, buyers may shift towards it, reducing demand for palm oil.
"We expect prices to trade between RM4,050 and RM4,200 per tonne next week," he told Bernama.
On a weekly basis, the July 2025 contract rose RM75 to RM4,070 per tonne, while August 2025 gained RM91 to RM4,144 per tonne.
September 2025 increased RM112 to RM4,174 per tonne, October 2025 climbed RM113 to RM4,177 per tonne, November 2025 added RM109 to RM4,174 per tonne, and December 2025 advanced RM103 to RM4,175 per tonne.
The weekly trading volume increased to 435,464 lots from 253,182 lots in the previous week, while open interest went up to 231,427 contracts from 226,243 contracts.
The physical CPO price for July South increased by RM110 to RM4,160 per tonne.

MyVISA 2.0 launches August 1 with AI-powered visa processing

PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) will roll out MyVISA 2.0 on August 1, a fully digital visa platform designed to streamline applications for foreign nationals. The upgraded system, announced during the 103rd Immigration Day celebration, integrates artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance efficiency. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah launched the platform, which replaces the original MyVISA system introduced in December 2021. Immigration director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban highlighted the benefits, stating, 'MyVISA 2.0 applies AI in the visa application process, eliminating the need for applicants to visit the office in person.' The new system incorporates optical character recognition (OCR), real-time notifications, and smart automation to reduce processing times. A dedicated mobile app will allow users to complete the entire process digitally, including passport scanning, document uploads, virtual interviews, and eVisa approvals with QR codes. JIM emphasized the platform's security and accessibility, noting, 'The upgraded platform offers a faster, more secure, and efficient visa application process, in line with the public's expectations.' Applicants will no longer need to visit Malaysian missions abroad, as all steps can be completed online. – Bernama

Ringgit extends gains to close higher amid Japan political uncertainty

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar at Monday's close, as the greenback struggled to appreciate amid political uncertainties in Japan, said an analyst. At 6 pm, the ringgit rose to 4.2320/2365 against the greenback, compared to Friday's close of 4.2410/2455. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the ringgit trended higher, supported by the election setback for Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's coalition, which did not trigger broader market volatility. "The absence of contagion allowed Asian and other emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, to edge higher and strengthen modestly,' he told Bernama. Echoing Innes, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit traded firmer in tandem with a 0.13 per cent decline in the US Dollar Index to 98.268 points, as major currencies such as the euro, yen, and the British pound all appreciated against the greenback. "Despite uncertainties surrounding Japanese politics, the US dollar is struggling to appreciate, yet this has not resulted in a weak Japanese yen,' he said. On that note, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit was generally firmer against the US dollar, with the pair hovering around RM4.2375 in the afternoon, compared to RM4.2493 during the morning session. At the close, the ringgit was traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It strengthened against the British pound to 5.6954/7015 from 5.6999/7060 and advanced versus the euro to 4.9277/9330 from 4.9336/9388 at Friday's close. However, it fell against the Japanese yen to 2.8612/8644 from 2.8517/8549. Meanwhile, the local note rose vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2990/3028 from 3.3027/3065, and gained against the Thai baht to 13.0754/0954 from 13.3027/3065. Additionally, the ringgit appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.6 from 260.2/260.6 and edged up versus the Philippine peso to 7.40/7.41 from 7.41/7.43 previously. - Bernama

Consumer Credit Commission To Implement Comprehensive Regulatory Framework For BNPL Schemes

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Consumer Credit Commission (CCC) will implement a comprehensive and sustainable regulatory framework for the 'buy now, pay later' (BNPL) scheme to ensure the public does not fall into debt traps or face a rise in bankruptcy cases. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said that under the framework, BNPL companies will be required to conduct debt affordability assessments before approving credit facilities for consumers. 'This assessment is crucial to ensure that credit users can repay the borrowed amount without facing serious financial stress or falling into a debt trap. 'The CCC will enforce compliance within the BNPL industry regarding the requirement to carry out these affordability assessments. Currently, most BNPL users take out small loans that do not exceed the legal threshold for bankruptcy proceedings,' she said when tabling the Consumer Credit Bill 2025 for the second reading in the Dewan Rakyat today. Lim said that the CCC will also require BNPL providers to transparently disclose all information related to credit terms, including fees, before any credit facility is offered. 'The government also emphasises the importance of financial literacy so that the public is better equipped to manage their finances and understand the risks of excessive BNPL usage. 'This approach aims to protect consumers from uncontrollable debt burdens and promote responsible borrowing practices,' she said, adding that the BNPL market in Malaysia is expanding rapidly. Currently, 16 companies offer BNPL schemes, with SPay Later, Atome, and GrabPay Later being the three largest providers, collectively holding over 95 per cent of market share. -- BERNAMA
