NASCAR Cup Series drivers take to Iowa Speedway for Goodyear tire test ahead of Iowa Corn 350
NEWTON, Iowa — Despite the gloomy weather on Tuesday, NASCAR Cup Series drivers were able to get some laps in at the Iowa Speedway. Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe were at the speedway for the Goodyear Tire Test ahead of the Iowa Corn 350 in August. The test helps Goodyear collect data to decide the types of tires needed to perform the best on the track. And while conditions on Tuesday were far from what they'll be in August, drivers were still eager to hit the pavement. Iowa small business owners asking for relief in tariff war 'I feel like the things that we kinda learned so far are what tires not to bring back and race here, as we found one that just really, really wasn't conducive or comfortable to drive as a driver,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Kyle Busch. Last year, the Iowa Speedway underwent a partial repave of the track's four turns, with Cup drivers last year saying that the change added some additional challenges to the race. On Tuesday, drivers echoed those concerns during the tire test. 'It's kind of wild how much the color has changed since we were here last time. It was like jet black, and now it's like you almost don't even know it was repaved. But I would say that the grip levels are still fairly similar,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Austin Cindric. 'It's really tough when you come to, especially a fresh repave, because getting the rubber laid down is part of the process, and today it was one of those things where it was kind of challenging. You get here and it's super slick, it's almost like we're driving on ice,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Chase Briscoe. Despite the repave, each driver stated how they are excited to see the Cup Series return to the Iowa Speedway on August 3. Fulton County leaders considering banning cell phones, smart devices in schools
The Brief The Fulton County School Board is considering a new proposal that would ban cell phones and smartwatches when students come back to class after summer vacation. Students in grades K-9 would not be allowed to use personal electronics during the school day. High school students would have to put their phones up during instructional time, but would be allowed to carry their devices at other points in the day. Officials say the proposed change would align with Georgia's recently-passed Distraction-Free Education Act. FULTON COUNTY, Ga. - Fulton County Schools could ban smart devices like cell phones and smartwatches when students come back to class after summer vacation. The new potential policy change was brought up at a board meeting on Monday. What we know If enacted, the policy change would prohibit the use of personal electronic devices for students in grades K-9 during the school day. High school students would have to put their phones up during instructional time, but would be allowed to carry their devices at other points in the day. Students would also be discouraged from using electronic devices on the school bus, with inappropriate use possibly resulting in disciplinary action. There would be exceptions to the rule for students that have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Section 504 plan, or medical plan that explicitly mandates the use of a personal electronic device for medical or educational purposes. The electronic devices that would be affected by the policy change include personal laptops, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smart glasses, headphones, and other devices that can send messages or allow access to social media. To assuage parents' fears over situations that involve contacting their children, the policy would require schools to "establish clear communication protocols that require parents or guardians who need to communicate with their student during the school day to contact the school directly." Dig deeper Officials say the proposed change would align with Georgia's recently-passed Distraction-Free Education Act. Earlier this year, state lawmakers overwhelmingly passed the bill, which would prohibit students K-8 across the state from accessing their personal electronic devices during school hours. The Marietta City School District, DeKalb County School District, and Atlanta Public Schools already require students to secure their phones in lockers or pouches during the school day. What's next If the board approves the change, it will go into effect in August. The Source Information for this story was taken from the policy proposal by the Fulton County School Board.

Knoxville man charged in drive-by shooting that resulted in him shooting himself in the leg, police say
KNOXVILLE, Iowa — A Knoxville man has been charged in a late-night drive-by shooting in Knoxville that resulted in him shooting himself in the leg, police say. At around 1:50 a.m. Tuesday the Knoxville Police Department received a report from a resident saying they had Ring doorbell footage of someone shooting at a home in the 1400 block of N Grant Street and again at an intersection further down the street, court documents say. The shooting resulted in the exterior pane of a window at a home on N Grant Street to shatter. Later that night, a man named Payton Lee Cole Phillips, 27, arrived at the Knoxville Emergency Room with a gunshot wound. According to court documents, Phillips was identified as the alleged shooter in the drive-by earlier that night. No other injuries were reported from the shooting. The driver of the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting told police that Phillips was in the front passenger seat and fired a handgun out of the window about four to five times in what was described as 'a random act of violence' in a criminal complaint. During the shooting Phillips unintentionally shot himself in the leg, the complaint states. 36-year-old former farm employee arrested for allegedly intentionally causing Waukee fuel leak Officers searched the vehicle that was allegedly used in the shooting and located a Glock 43X, which is believed to be the handgun used by Phillips, as well as two loaded magazines, raw marijuana flower, and a used marijuana grinder, court documents state. Officers also located a spent 9 mm shell casing in the hospital parking lot and three spent 9 mm shell casings at the intersection of Grant St. and Jackson St. According to a criminal complaint, when officers initially spoke with Phillips at the hospital, they noted he had a strong odor of alcohol, blood shot and watery eyes, droopy eyelids, and slurred speech. Phillips was arrested and charged with the following: Intimidation with a dangerous weapon – no intent Reckless use of a firearm – bodily injury Reckless use of a firearm – property damage Reckless use of a firearm Possession or carrying of a dangerous weapon while under the influence Person ineligible to carry a dangerous weapon Use of a dangerous weapon in the commissions of a crime Possession of marijuana – first offense Possession of drug paraphernalia Phillips was booked into the Marion County Jail on a $17,000 cash/surety bond. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 15. Iowa News: Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
