State Rep. Eddie Andrews announces run for Iowa Governor
DES MOINES, Iowa — On late Wednesday morning on the steps of the Iowa State Capitol building, another Iowa Republican threw his hat in to the ring to seek the state's highest office. State Representative Eddie Andrews (R) from District 43 had a crowd of supporters there for his announcement. Rep. Andrews said in his speech that he is focused on expanding accessible mental health care and youth transition programs. He also said that he wants to bring the state back to the top in education, referencing private, public, charter and home schools. He commented on the use of eminent domain for carbon pipelines, stating that he sides with the landowner, as he has voted on in the Iowa House. He used issues to discuss money involved in state politics and how he wants to get rid of the dollar influence when running for office. In a statement he said: 'Iowa deserves a Governor who listens and delivers. My experience as a tech entrepreneur, minister, and legislator prepares me to serve you. NASCAR Cup Series drivers take to Iowa Speedway for Goodyear tire test ahead of Iowa Corn 350
NEWTON, Iowa — Despite the gloomy weather on Tuesday, NASCAR Cup Series drivers were able to get some laps in at the Iowa Speedway. Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe were at the speedway for the Goodyear Tire Test ahead of the Iowa Corn 350 in August. The test helps Goodyear collect data to decide the types of tires needed to perform the best on the track. And while conditions on Tuesday were far from what they'll be in August, drivers were still eager to hit the pavement. Iowa small business owners asking for relief in tariff war 'I feel like the things that we kinda learned so far are what tires not to bring back and race here, as we found one that just really, really wasn't conducive or comfortable to drive as a driver,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Kyle Busch. Last year, the Iowa Speedway underwent a partial repave of the track's four turns, with Cup drivers last year saying that the change added some additional challenges to the race. On Tuesday, drivers echoed those concerns during the tire test. 'It's kind of wild how much the color has changed since we were here last time. It was like jet black, and now it's like you almost don't even know it was repaved. But I would say that the grip levels are still fairly similar,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Austin Cindric. 'It's really tough when you come to, especially a fresh repave, because getting the rubber laid down is part of the process, and today it was one of those things where it was kind of challenging. You get here and it's super slick, it's almost like we're driving on ice,' said NASCAR Cup Series Driver Chase Briscoe. Despite the repave, each driver stated how they are excited to see the Cup Series return to the Iowa Speedway on August 3. Julie Stauch announces run for Iowa governor
DES MOINES, Iowa — After years of managing and working in campaigns at the local, state and federal levels, Julie Stauch is making a run for the state's highest office. It's her first time seeking public office, Julie tells WHO 13 News that she is treating it like a job resume with a cover letter and actual resume listed on her campaign website. You can learn more about her background and the different organizations she has been involved with, including the 24 campaigns spanning across all levels of government. Iowa veteran passes halfway point on Appalachian Trail 'Iowans are disgusted with our elected leaders, and we want change,' said Stauch (D). 'We are done with the destruction created by a Governor and Legislators who are destroying every aspect of our state, playing childish games with people's lives. We value our water, our soil, our children's futures, our schools, our communities and our county governments. We need leaders who embrace those values. I am one of those leaders.' Stauch is one of a couple of Iowa Democrats to jump into the field, with State Auditor Rob Sand announced his bid for office just several weeks ago. Iowa veteran passes halfway point on Appalachian Trail
WHO 13 NEWS — Iowa veteran Joedy VanValzen is officially halfway done hiking the Appalachian Trail. He cruised past the mental halfway point in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia a couple weeks ago. Last week, he completed 1,100 miles and made it to Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Pennsylvania, the actual physical halfway point. Celebrated comedian bringing 2025 tour to Des Moines this fall VanVelzen took a few days off from the trail when his wife, Deb, came to visit him so he could rest and be ready to go for the second half of the journey. She brought him a new pair of shoes, his fourth pair on the trail. Photos posted to his Facebook page, On the Appalachian Trail with Joedy, show VanVelzen's break was fueled by sweet treats, juicy burgers, and cold beverages. He was back to hiking through the southern part of Pennsylvania on Sunday, June 1. Back in March, VanVelzen started the nearly 2,200-mile expedition in Georgia. He has fewer than 1,100 miles to go until the end of the trail in Maine. Gov. Kim Reynolds signs bill aimed at growing rural hospital workforces
GUTHRIE CENTER, Iowa — Governor Kim Reynolds signed her top priority into law on Wednesday afternoon. The Governor signed her own proposed legislation at the Guthrie County Hospital, with state health care leaders, lawmakers and health care workers in attendance. The bill, HF 972, has a plethora of provisions aimed at incentivizing medical students in the state to practice here. 'Iowa ranks 40th in the number of residency slots available to medical students, which means many of our graduates from Iowa medical schools don't get a chance to continue their education and training here,' said Reynolds. The bill sets up a loan repayment program for medical students who commit to work in a rural health care system for at least five years — doubling the funding of the existing program to nearly $8 million. Families part ways with 1,800 Iowa soldiers at deployment sendoff ceremonies Iowa Health and Human Services is also directed to work on receiving $150 million in federal funding that will allow 115 new residency slots to be added annually to Iowa's medical schools. 'Just three to four years from now, the amount of time it takes for a typical residency rotation, we could have up to 450 more physicians being trained right here in Iowa, with some ready to enter the workforce, and we're going to be ready for them,' said Reynolds. The legislation also sets up a $3 million health care credential granting program that will allow hospitals to educate and train future health care workers. 'It's no secret there's a physician shortage and a nurse shortage,' said Chris Stipe, the CEO of the Guthrie County Hospital. 'But let's be honest, there's a shortage of all qualified health care workers in nearly every field. And workforce shortages are often more severe in smaller communities. If we are to continue to effectively care for our rural Iowa communities, critical strategies such as loan forgiveness programs and graduate medical education programs must be funded and expanded and run efficiently.' Governor Reynolds also signed another bill, HF 310, into law that expands the legal definition of 'health care provider' to protect more health care workers who are assaulted while at work by an individual.
