The Best '70s Ski Outfits From the POWDER Archives

As you might remember (or as your parents might remind you), things were a bit different in the 1970s. Global politics were in upheaval, society was opening its mind to new norms, and ski bumming was entering its first golden age. Those were also the years when this publication, first helmed by founders Jake and Dave Moe, began chronicling the deeper side of ski culture. At the time, ski culture had started to evolve into the free-spirited and expression-driven form it still has today, in part driven by the pages of the first volumes of POWDER Magazine. Powder skiing represented the ultimate freedom, and in true 1970s fashion, the skiers of the time took their expression of it to extreme lengths. Speaking of fashion, this was the era of true drip: from tight-fitting one-piece ski suits to oversized knit sweaters, most everything featured loud colors, patterns, and revealing necklines. These were the days before Gore-Tex and other waterproof/breathable fabrics, with skiers instead opting for wool sweaters and the odd stretchy ski suit. These things were warm, bordering on sweaty, but they undoubtedly oozed style.

Many iconic ski brands really found their stride in the 1970s. Look at how far things have come in these ads from Bogner, Rossignol, and Gerry Clothing.
Apparel ads from the 70s were just built different.
The wool sweater, still an icon of ski fashion today, provided the vibes during the 70s. Personally, these are WAY too hot for me to wear anywhere but inside a cozy mountain hut, but to each their own, I suppose.
Eyewear was also on point, with many skiers still opting for large-framed sunglasses instead of full-on goggles. Fashion over function, especially on sunny days. For anyone who has worn goggles of this era, you'll remember that fogging was a pretty real issue.
Marketing copy has always been a hot topic of discussion for brands. How can you make things eye-catching without being too weird? That clearly didn't matter to apparel manufacturers back then.
Marlboro jackets? Budweiser sweaters? Nothing was sacred back then.
While backcountry skiing really entered its golden age during the COVID pandemic, skiers have been walking up mountains and enjoying soft turns on the way down for many years. Take a look at the style and equipment (or lack thereof) employed during the 1970s from places like Vail to Courchevel.
Long before technical outerwear, skiers were enjoying hard-earned turns deep in the backcountry.

Chaos As Cruise Ship Window Shatters Raining Glass Onto Busy Pool Deck

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Footage capturing the alarming moment a glass panel from a cruise ship restaurant suddenly fell onto a pool deck has captivated viewers on social media. The frightening incident unfolded aboard Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas cruise ship on June 8. The vessel was said to be turning to dock at its first scheduled stop in Port Canaveral, Florida. Tytti Tuliainen, a 40-year-old travel content creator from Finland, shared a view of the glass panel crashing onto the deck, with guests watching from the pool, in a video posted on her YouTube channel @TravelingFinnishGirl. Newsweek has contacted Royal Caribbean by email and @missdiane93 via TikTok for comment. This video has not been independently verified. The YouTuber was having lunch at a restaurant on the ship when she heard the window cracking. Tuliainen told Newsweek: "I was dining in the Coastal Kitchen above the pool deck when it happened." @missdiane93 This happened today on Symphony of the Seas! Great staff member noticed it and cleared the area. ♬ original sound - MissDiane Another view of the scene from the pool deck was captured in a video shared by TikTok user @missdiane93. The clip, which has amassed more than 3.8 million views since it was posted on June 9, shows the glass panel cracking before dropping onto sun loungers by the pool. A man is shown flinching and running away just as the glass drops, with the murmur of alarmed crowds heard in the background. A voice off-camera says: "That would have just hit us." Cruise travel continues to see strong growth in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. A 2025 report by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) found that cruise passenger numbers are projected to reach 37.7 million in 2025. Eighty-two percent of cruisers are planning to cruise again, while 68 percent of international travelers are considering going on their first cruise. First-time cruisers were reported to be driving the growth, with 31 percent of passengers in the last two years being new to cruise, according to the CLIA. Users on Reddit also shared posts about the incident, including by u/ Smooth_J24 and u/ireadmorethenpost, who shared an image of staff members examining the site of the shattered glass. Tuliainen said: "When the glass shattered unexpectedly, one of the crew members working in the restaurant—Nitin Kumar—ran down to move people away from under the floor-to-ceiling window. Thanks to his quick response, no one was hurt." The cruise website Cruise Fever said Kumar responded to the incident in a Facebook group created for the cruise trip, saying: "Thank you so much everyone for appreciation, you all are my family, what I did I did for family … what I did I learn from this company how to take care of my guests like family, so thank you so much. Enjoy your vacation." Staff members reportedly responded immediately and passengers reported that "the window is already replaced," with repairs done swiftly, according to Cruise Fever. Tuliainen said: "No one knows why the window broke. Only the outside panel shattered, and there was no impact that anyone saw." The cruise was said to have resumed normal operations, going onto the Bahamas with its return to New Jersey scheduled for June 13. Stock image: A Royal Caribbean cruise ship sails at sea. Glen Powell's Ex Recalls Being 'Blindsided' By A Breakup Involving A 'PR Scheme'

Gigi Paris appears to be reflecting on her past relationship with actor Glen Powell with the benefit of hindsight. The model appeared on Tuesday's episode of the 'Too Much' podcast and spoke at length about her recent split from what host Emma Klipstein refers to as a 'boyfriend of four years,' though Powell is not identified by name. According to Paris, she and her ex began dating in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but found themselves at a crossroads when his career 'skyrocketed' once they began resuming their day-to-day life. 'I had no idea what I was getting myself into,' she explained. 'I am a family person. I like to be at home with my friends and my family, and I like things simple. But I was also really grateful to experience all that and go to such incredible places and see all the magic. But in seeing all of it, I also saw a lot of what it takes to kind of succeed in that world.' She went on to note: 'I felt like I was sacrificing a lot to show up and be there for that person, but I don't know if it was fully reciprocated in hindsight.' The breaking point, Paris said, came when her boyfriend chose to prioritize a 'PR scheme at the expense of our relationship.' 'I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder, like: 'Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she OK with this? What the fuck?'' she said. 'Or stand up for myself and say, 'No, I'm actually not OK with this, and I'm walking away.' So that's what I decided to do. It wasn't a way to monetize the breakup. It wasn't a way to twist the story around. I was shattered.' Though Paris notably refrained from identifying the people involved in this situation, she appeared to be describing the longstanding rumors of a romance between Powell and his 'Anyone but You' co-star Sydney Sweeney. Speaking to The New York Times last year, Powell acknowledged he and Sweeney ― who was engaged to producer Jonathan Davino at the time ― opted to 'lean into' their 'effortless chemistry' while promoting their film. To date, the two actors have not publicly confirmed a relationship. Nonetheless, Paris said she felt 'blindsided' by the experience. 'Don't make a fool out of someone you've been with for over three years, talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know?' she said. 'And at the end of the day, it was like, 'Well, work comes first.' And if that's the case, power to you, that's your priority. I got to walk away.' Though Paris didn't clarify the status of her ex-boyfriend's relationship, she said she was hopeful that he and his co-star would 'end up together,' noting: 'I hope they are in love or whatnot.' 'I have heard so many different sides of the story. I have no confirmation of what actually happened,' she continued. 'I just know what my standards are. And for me, it just wasn't OK the way it was handled, period.' Though the exact timeline of their relationship remains unclear, Paris and Powell split in 2023 ― the same year 'Anyone but You' became a surprise hit at the box office. Speculation that Powell and Sweeney are dating began heating up again in April following news that Sweeney had called off her engagement to Davino. That same month, Powell confirmed Sweeney was a guest at his sister's Texas wedding, albeit not as his date. Listen to Gigi Paris's full interview on the 'Too Much' podcast here.
