Oregon FootballSpring Game report card: Things get defensive at Autzen
The annual Oregon Ducks spring football game has come and gone, and we saw a mixed bag of everything between some great play and some not-so-great play. But it was a scrimmage, so when the offense did well, the defense didn't, and vice versa. It was difficult to gauge the realistic value of the gameplay.
What we did see was some great individual talent on both sides of the ball. This may be one of the fastest and most physical defenses we have ever seen from the Ducks. It's no wonder the offense struggled at times. But when the quarterbacks did have time to throw, they showed the ability to make some great throws in tight windows.
As we go through the report card, keep in mind it was just a scrimmage and nothing too big should be taken out of it. But it was fun to see the Ducks, with a lot of new names, out on the field doing their thing. Here's how we grade each position group after the action.
Quarterbacks
Grade: B
A total of six quarterbacks saw action on Saturday, and the one guy who distinguished himself was redshirt freshman Luke Moga. He's more of an athletic quarterback, the type Oregon fans are used to. Dante Moore showed the most grasp of the offense, and Austin Novosad has a gun for an arm. But it was tough to get an accurate reading with the "one touch of the QB, and it's a sack" rule. In general, it was easy to see the Ducks' offense operating well with any QB at the helm this fall.
Running Backs
Grade: B-
The running backs didn't have much action, but when they did, they had some nice runs. Jayden Limar had an explosive 31-yard touchdown, and Jay Harris scored twice but also fumbled. Noah Whittington looks as if he's going to push to be RB1 against Makhi Hughes. That's a competition to look for in the fall.
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends
Grade: A+
The receivers stood out on Saturday, and Evan Stewart didn't even play. Oregon is going to have a tough time deciding who to target the most when it comes down to it. The talent is that deep. Dillon Gresham had a big game, as did tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Gresham's late touchdown catch-and-run was the highlight. Fans got a taste of what true freshman Dakorien Moore can do with his impressive reception down the sideline.
In a year where Oregon lost both Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden to the NFL, there were some questions about how the Ducks would replace the WR talent. On Saturday, I think we saw that this should not be an issue.
Offensive Line
Grade: D
Yeah, this group struggled a bit, but it shouldn't be much of a surprise this early. There are a lot of new guys along that line, and the Ducks are going to have to see which group plays the best with each other. Among both teams, the offensive line allowed 11 "sacks."
Defensive Line
Grade: A
The defensive linemen took advantage of an under-experienced offensive line, but that doesn't take away from the talent that is among that group. Matayo Uiagalelei has taken the next step in his development and will be an unstoppable beast in 2025. The Big Ten better be prepared.
Linebackers
Grade: A
Even with Bryce Boettcher playing just a few plays, the linebackers are young, physical, and fast. The highlight was Blake Purchase's scoop-and-score off of a fumble. Guys like Jerry Mixon and Brayden Platt also looked great throughout the day, and Lanning went as far as to say after the game that they will not be adding an LB in the portal, giving a massive vote of confidence to this group.
Secondary
Grade: B
Defending all those receivers is a tough ask and the secondary held their own for the most part. It was good to see Jahlil Florence back on the field after an injury-riddled 2024. This group will get better and better as the season goes on.
Special Teams
Grade: A-
Atticus Sappington and Gage Hurych hit three of their four field goal attempts, but it was Hurych's 54-yard boot that was the highlight. Oregon might have not one but two reliable kickers on its hands. However, the Duck's punting game was a rough scene, with starting punter Ross James having a bad day, shanking one of his kicks for just 12 yards.

West spotlight: Biggest June visits
USA Today Sports June has become arguably the most important month in the recruiting calendar, with prospects crisscrossing the country on official visits and lining up announcement dates. Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney looks at five West prospects who are taking key visits this month. Advertisement BIG RECRUITING WEEKEND AHEAD: Top storylines | Five biggest Southeast visits in June | Biggest Midwest visits | Biggest Florida visits BRANDON ARRINGTON, Oregon (this weekend) There is a very real possibility that Oregon could land all three five-stars in California and this weekend could go a very long way in figuring that out. Arrington really liked his Washington visit last weekend. He could love his Oregon trip as the Ducks and Texas A&M are recruiting him the hardest. USC seems to be fading in his recruitment as Oregon, Texas A&M, Penn State and Washington are the frontrunners and making the biggest impact. Advertisement With his position versatility, his track background and so much more, Oregon looks like a top contender in Arrington's recruitment and this weekend could push the Ducks even higher on his list. RYDER LYONS, Oregon (June 13) How is this not shaping up great for Oregon? The five-star quarterback from Folsom, Calif., has Oregon and BYU visits coming up and then some fringe programs also involved with Michigan, Ohio State and Ole Miss in the mix. It seems like USC is a long shot in his recruitment which further solidifies the Ducks at the top. Oregon lost four-star QB Jonas Williams to USC and five-star quarterback Jared Curtis picked Georgia over the Ducks. Coach Dan Lanning and his staff have now prioritized Lyons, who could be similar to Bo Nix in that offense with more athleticism outside the pocket, and BYU just feels like a stretch at this point. VANCE SPAFFORD, Miami (June 20) Spafford remains committed to Georgia but he's going through his visit schedule this month starting at Washington, at UCLA this weekend, then he'll be at Georgia and will close out June at Miami before the Rivals Five-Star and then back to South Florida for the OT7 nationals. It's a busy time for the Mission Viejo, Calif. Standout. Advertisement A commitment to the Bulldogs since early November, the biggest threat to flip Spafford is Miami as he loves Coral Gables, the coaches there and the opportunity at wide receiver. That he's taking his final visit there is also telling but Georgia will have its chance soon as well. JETT WASHINGTON, Oregon (this weekend) Washington canceled his Ohio State official visit to move up his Oregon visit - another sign that the Ducks are a major frontrunner in his recruitment. The Ducks are very high on the list with Alabama (where he already visited) and Washington took a mid-week trip to USC as well. This will be the last official visit - for now - for the four-star safety from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman and that's a great sign for Oregon. He moved up his trip, it's his final planned trip for now and the Ducks have been in a strong position throughout his recruitment. The Ducks are sitting pretty - if things go really well this weekend. RICHARD WESLEY, Oregon (this weekend) On May 10 during a visit to Oregon, the five-star defensive end jumped in a pool with coach Dan Lanning to announce his commitment to the Ducks. Before he could dry off, the Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon standout had backed off that pledge 17 days later since he didn't clear the pledge with those close to him. Wesley is back at Oregon this weekend as the coaching staff looks to continue to mend fences and work on getting Wesley back in the fold as the Ducks have always been one of his favorites. The five-star standout is also considering Ohio State, Texas A&M, Texas and others but Oregon can put itself back in a great spot with a solid visit this weekend.

Oregon legend Sabrina Ionescu gets the Jeopardy! treatment
Oregon legend Sabrina Ionescu gets the Jeopardy! treatment When you're the answer of a clue on Jeopardy!, then you know you're big time. In the June 5 episode of the famous quiz show, every Oregon Ducks basketball fan jumped up off their seat of choice and yelled out the correct answer to the $1,000 clue in the category, The Winning Shot. This star of Romanian heritage hit from near the center court logo to put the New York Liberty up a game in the 2024 WNBA Finals. Of course, the answer is Sabrina Ionescu. As host Ken Jennings read off the clue, a couple of pictures of Ionescu were shown. Fortunately, someone got the answer correct to avoid a ban of the game show in the state of Oregon. Ionescu led the Liberty to their first-ever WNBA championship a year ago as they defeated the Minnesota Lynx 3-2 in the Best-of-5 series. They were looking for a repeat here in 2025 as New York is undefeated at 8-0, but it's still early in the season. Ionescu is averaging 17.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and five assists per game this season.
